I enjoyed reading about her reinventing herself. I also liked the realistic ending. Everything ended okay, her being content. Not all was perfect and it made me like her more.
So much emphasis on being fat. So self depreciating. Wasn’t a fan at all.
good book for an afternoon escape
I finished it and enjoyed reading it but had a hard time with believability. Very predictable.
A realistic look at a heavy girl’s attempts to value herself and cope with the opinions and feedback she receives from others from girlhood to womanhood.
Not what I expected from the title. Good story. Reminded me that self concept is within each of us.
Boring. I didn’t bother to finish it.
Meh.
Boring. Didn’t even finish. Sorry
One of the funniest scenes is when our heroine tells about her love affair with the Cadbury Egg.
Why aren’t there more stars?? While I’m not exactly like the protagonist she and I share many internal thoughts…I even fall for Cadbury Creme Eggs. But seriously, I was deeply involved with Claire as she faced some new and old tough scenarios; and rooted her on as she met, matched and triumphed.
This was a really good book! The characters were realistically flawed and readers can identify with their choices and struggles. The main character was so funny and witty.
Claire is a fat girl, and she used to wear that tag with shame. Struggling her entire life with her weight, she’s come with many ways to cope, and now she’s learning to live life in the wake of a divorce that blindsided her. Her biggest outlet is through blogging, and after blogging for 10 years with wit, humor, and sincerity, she gets picked up for a weekly column in the NYT. She’s going to spend the year before she turns 40 reinventing herself and sharing it with the world. In her journey, she discovers so much more about herself than she ever dreamed possible.
There were so many things that hit me right in the gut, but the part that hit me the most was on aging. Because we spend so much time concerned if we are doing “life” right, worrying about the next stage, or just worrying in general. When we should be just trying our best to enjoy every stage of life, every precious moment.
“I spent most of your childhood wondering when I was going to feel like an adult….and then the next thing I knew, I was already an old lady. It’s like I went from those awkward teen years to being a senior citizen overnight.”
Montgomery has done a superb job covering so many topics while keeping true to the title. To name a few: weight gain and struggles, eating disorders, aging, inter-family relationships, and bullying. Fat Girl is poignant and powerful, with hard-hitting truths that resonate with the reader whether they are fat, slim, or anywhere on the weight spectrum.
Body Positive!
Lost of people can relate to this book , it hits close to home for a lot of people who find themselves going through a divorce. Woman who are normal size but the world calls heavy can relate to this as well…. I have followed this wonderful Author for every book she has written, they are all well written, they make you think about how you treat others and how people treat you…..without meaning to !! I am not giving away anything about this book because other reviewers have …. my honest opinion about this book is read it and while doing so THINK about it !!
A very open and honest book about the struggles of Fat Girl.
Bless her, her self-loathing really has climaxed. And she’s faced with having to deal with her issues.
But her therapy sessions go deeper and further than she expected.
I really liked Claire; a very flawed MC.
I’m British, so self-deprecation kinda goes with the territory, and I respected that aspect of her character.
It is not an easy read as Claire punishes herself with her strict starvation and harsh exercise regime I was screaming, and almost throwing my Kindle across the room! “What are you doing?” I asked her. Strangely, the character didn’t respond 😉
Dating fiascos and family troubles run riot in this sombre yet funny novel.
And it is funny. There’s a wry humour running throughout.
This is a great journey through self-discovery, taking the scenic road, bumpy hills included.
I read this book in one sitting. I talked my husband’s ear off about this book. You need to read this book. Montgomery has this gift that I thought was reserved to my favorite female author of Edna Ferber, for making her characters really stand off the page. I can hear her characters talking. I can see them so clearly. Claire is a joy! She is a real woman and there’s not enough books with real women going through real things. Read this book.
This is the story of a woman nearing 40 that is searching to reinvent herself. This book tells her story as she struggles time and again to lose weight only to discover that she suffers from an eating disorder. It then tells how she comes to terms with her disorder and what she does to help herself to become happy and healthy for once in her life.
I struggled at first with how the story is told. It’s mostly like a journal with the main character telling the reader what is happening in her life. It’s interspersed with snippets of conversation and interactions between characters. The message of the book is so uplifting and positive that it overpowers any issues I had with the telling of the tale.
I would definitely recommend this book for anyone struggling to find themselves, going through divorce, or struggling with weight/health.
It isn’t often that you pick up a book and feel like you’ve stepped into your own life, yet that’s exactly how I felt when I read Fat Girl. I loved every minute of this witty emotional ride, and fell in love with the characters straight away. K.L Montgomery has done it again! This book is brilliantly written and I highly recommend the read.
Can’t say enough about this book! Fat Girl is well written and has well rounded characters. I felt for Claire from the beginning and often knew exactly what she was going through. Great story, highly recommend!
