New York Times BestsellerRobert Lustig’s 90-minute YouTube video “Sugar: The Bitter Truth”, has been viewed more than three million times. Now, in this much anticipated book, he documents the science and the politics that has led to the pandemic of chronic disease over the last 30 years. In the late 1970s when the government mandated we get the fat out of our food, the food industry responded by … the food industry responded by pouring more sugar in. The result has been a perfect storm, disastrously altering our biochemistry and driving our eating habits out of our control.
To help us lose weight and recover our health, Lustig presents personal strategies to readjust the key hormones that regulate hunger, reward, and stress; and societal strategies to improve the health of the next generation. Compelling, controversial, and completely based in science, Fat Chance debunks the widely held notion to prove “a calorie is NOT a calorie”, and takes that science to its logical conclusion to improve health worldwide.

Added sugar is toxic to our bodies and Dr Lustig and colleagues help shed valuable light on this epidemic.
This is a great book that pulls back the covers of the lies we’ve been told about nutrition. The information in this book allowed me to begin steering a course to better health, without the mysteries and uncertainties that you are left with in the flood of misinformation abounding lately. To clearly see the campaigns that were undertaken to fool the public into the diet guidelines shoveled at us leaves me with a solid determination to set a new course. The clear medical explanations are jaw dropping in their pointed accusations of our path of destruction and the obvious consequences for all generations. This is as clear as a warning cry can get… And incredibly, the no nonsense answers.
This book was very informative. It is quite disturbing how chemists are playing with our food. They spend millions developing additives to our food to make them more addictive. I cook and bake most our food at home so I know what is actually in it. If consumers start to demand healthier foods the producers will hopefully oblige and make it available. Organic foods are becoming much more prevalent in grocery stores. It’s a start.
Absolute best and most direct explanation of the physiology of digestion and body energy management I have read. I have recommended this book to my students. Dr. Lustg, makes clear how powerful your body can be when you remove obstacles you find in your daily diet.
wow, what a revelation for me to find out how food and politics mix. Never would have thought about that. I do know our food system is out of balance, one reason we are seeing such strange ailments in our culture. Some of the science in the doctor’s research was over my head, but i did get the point in including it. Now i am understanding why these extra 20 pounds of mine never go away! I liked the examples he gave of some of his patients, to help the reader understand the underlying reasons of their health problems.
It was a good book that told me how the government, politicians, big corporations and farmers have ruined the health of our diets by adding sugar to everything for the almighty dollars they can make by doing so…but I bought it because I thought it was going to be a self-help book that would help me avoid that substance, so it wasn’t what I was looking for.
This book really gets at the reasons for increasing obesity in our country and the world. The author provides steps we as individuals can take to address it. We can not wait for our governmental entities to fix this problem as they are a part of it.
Very informative. Made me change the way I eat!
