Rede, the Earl of Chirbury wants the beautiful widow, Anne Forsythe, from the moment he first sees her. Not that he has time for dalliance, or that the virtuous widow would be available if he did.Or perhaps not so virtuous? She lives rent-free in a cottage belonging to the estate, courtesy of his predecessor and cousin, George. And her daughter’s distinctive eyes mark the little girl as George’s … as George’s child.
But it isn’t just the mystery that surrounds her that keeps drawing him to her side.
Anne Forsythe has good cause to be wary of men, peers and members of the Redepenning family. The Earl of Chirbury is all three, and a distraction she does not need. If she can hide her sisters until the youngest turns 21, they will be safe from her uncle’s sinister plans.
And she is a virtuous woman, her reputation in the village built through years of impeccable behaviour. The Earl of Chirbury is not for her, and she will not fall to his fascinating smile, gentle teasing, and tragic past. Let him continue to pursue the villains who ordered the deaths of his family three years ago, and leave her and her family alone.
But good intentions fly in the face of their strong attraction, until several accidents make Rede believe his enemies are determined to kill him, and Anne wonder whether her uncle has found her.
To build a future together, they must be prepared to face their pasts—something their deadly enemies have no intention of allowing.

This is my first time reading anything by this author and I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. This is a historical mystery romance story that has a lot of drama, emotion, suspense, twists and turns in it. The main characters are fairly well described and there are a lot of sub characters. There are some steamy scenes in this story also. I enjoyed it and shall look out for more by this author in the future.

This is the 1st book I’ve read written by Jude Knight; she has done a great job at writing a good book; I can’t wait to read more of her books.
The story line caught my attention at the very beginning and kept me interested throughout the entire book.
I loved the chemistry between the characters.

It was quite interesting and engaging story.
Sometimes I thought that was to many characters but I keep reading. It was well written book, characters with great chemistry.
He is on revenge to find person who murder his family, she is in hiding from wicked earl and protecting her family.
The bitterness turns to sweet feelings and protection ,especially when somebody is after them.
It’s nice historical picture of time gone.

Warning, potential triggers. Dark subject that may make some readers uncomfortable. Interesting story but too complex with too many characters to keep straight. I had difficulty following in a few places and couldn’t even keep all the sisters straight. There were also quite a few unfamiliar and confusing phrases, such as writing being “recorded in reverse.” These things didn’t affect the overall story much, but was pretty annoying. At times it seemed like it dragged on longer than necessary.

I know that if I start to read one of the author’s books I won’t be able to put it down & this is no exception. Beautifully written with characters that leap out of the page at you. The pace of the story is very good & flows effortlessly. There are plenty of secrets & also Rede needs to find his family’s killer. As in lots of books that contain secrets I shouted several times talk to each other. A lovely series starter, thanks to Booksprout for the copy.
A true masterpiece.
Jude Knight is an interesting writer she gives an old-fashioned feeling or flavor to her books. This one gives the reader a protective and in charge hero who has suffered a great loss but there is not just him but other strong men of character in the story. Then you have a strong heroine. All of this is with-in a powerfully written piece that you will find hard to put down yet you will need to give yourself a moment or two from time to time it is so emotional. High praise for this period piece I highly recommend. I did receive a free copy of this book and voluntarily chose to review it.
