Brooke Markham needs a man. A real good man. But she’s not looking for a keeper. She’s too busy kicking ass, running an empire, and caring for her ailing father to spend time with men who want annoying things like relationships and commitment and…conversation. Brooke knows what she wants and it’s not a future with the growly barkeep. JJ Harniczek needs money. A whole lot of money. He’s determined … lot of money.
He’s determined to launch his distillery, expand his tavern, and put Talbott’s Cove on the foodie tourism map. But there’s no way he’s asking Brooke for a dime. Not before he takes her to bed and definitely not after.
JJ knows where he’s headed and the blonde bombshell isn’t about to change that.
Not until she changes his entire world.
Return to Talbott’s Cove with this steamy rom-com standalone!

This book confirms that Kate Canterbary is my favorite romance author hands down. Her writing fits me perfectly, and everything is well balanced, the amount of smut, emotions, humor. The characters are not caricatural without an ounce of sappiness. I’m usually not a fan of stories in small towns, of lumberjack beard, man buns, but I didn’t mind at all and immediately fell in love with this series, just like I did of her Walshes series. It’s the third book of the series, and although they all take place in this little town, they’re all very different. You can read this book as a standalone, but I’m sure that if you do, you would go back and read the other two. I loved that the characters from the previous books are in this one.
Even though it’s narrated by the two main characters, JJ and Brooke, the other characters, are very important in the story. I particularly loved the friendship building between JJ and Jackson. I also relished the witty dialogs between all of them. The one between Annette and Brooke is lively and unique.
The only bad thing is that I have to wait for two months until her next book.
I love, love Kate Canterbary’s writing. This book was fantastic. Brooke and JJ fight hard and love hard too. Adored how these two prickly but protective souls came together and made it work. Little glimpses of Annette and Jackson were greatly appreciated too. Can’t wait for the next book in this series.
Far Cry is amazing. It gave me all the feels. I laughed, I cried and I hurt with the leading characters. Canterbary delivers as always.
I loved this story. Plain and simple. I could relate to Brooke on so many levels. Not the model-worthy looks or the millions in the bank, obviously, but the hurt. The insecurities. The loneliness and desperate need to maintain a facade. The fear of letting someone in. It’s raw and real and beautiful.
Canterbary has created her own little universe inhabited by the most quirky and lovable bunch of characters you’ll ever meet in fiction. The surroundings she describes are so appealing you just want to move into the book and stay there. After reading her Talbot’s Cove books, I’m dying to visit Maine and explore every little coastal town there. But it’s so much more than the setting of her stories and her charismatic characters. She mixes angst, heartache and all the heavy with humour in a perfect balancing act. To be able to write a story that had me crying from laughter one chapter, only to be crying from emotional overload the next is nothing but brilliant.
In short, Canterbary’s writing is inspired. Because in between the romance, the sexytimes and the emotional rollercoasters, Far Cry is absolutely hilarious. One particular scene had me actually hiccuping I laughed so hard. Her writing represents the very best of the romance genre, and if you haven’t read her work you’re missing out.
Quite literally missing out. If I hadn’t read Far Cry, I would have missed a ton of linguistic gems. I’m particularly looking forward to use the word ‘clamjamming’ in a conversation. Wish me luck!

As always with Kate’s books, this is filled with sass, steam, glamor and brilliant friendship. This series of Talbott cove has left me wishing it was possible to move there. The best part is there is always a few small details that Kate has carried throughout the series. It’s like she’s letting the readers see the secrets of Talbott cove itself with each book.
Jj and Brooke’s chemistry makes the pages steam while they bounce around each other trying to figure their lives out. Brooke and Annette friendship is up there with the best of them and reminds me how lucky I Am with my besties. You’ll be laughing from the very first chapter. I’ve missed them. In this book we get a deeper vision of Brooke and her life (waited ages for this book) and why she is the way she is. And just imagining some scenes is absolutely hilarious.
Love this book. Kate is known for her grumpy men and she sure delivered with JJ. But Brooke gave him a run for his money. The struggle and heat between these two is unbelievably good. And I was so happy to revisit Talbotts Cove.
What do you get when you have a growly, man-bun wearing barkeep and a salty AF hedge fund running woman with lots of hate f*@#ing? A really freaking awesome read is what you get. Ok, I digress y’all. Not really. Let me start from the beginning a bit.
Far Cry is the third book in the Talbott’s Cave series, yes it can be read as a standalone, and yes you should read Fresh Catch, Hard Pressed and the rest of Ms. Canterbary’s backlist. You’re welcome. For those of you who’ve read the other books, welcome to the club, especially Hard Pressed where we get some Brooke and JJ action.
Brooke has been back at Talbott’s Cove for two years, not willingly, but she’s here for her dad. She’s also in need of some ahem male anatomy for sure. Brooke and JJ grew up together, but there has been much saltiness with each other. Until it wasn’t so salty and downright dirty between the sheets.
JJ, man he is sure something special, in lots of ways, especially love giving Brooke a run for her money. JJ and Brooke make hate f*@#ing into an art form. But there’s more layers into their onion filled relationship, that’s for certain.
When this lovely ARC landed on Kindle, all I wanted to do was stay home and read, but you know damn family and scouring NYC was in the works, but that didn’t stop me from reading my Kindle on my phone, no siree. It took me to a beautiful town in Maine instead.
Also, you don’t have to be blood to have the kind of sisterhood, Brooke and Annette have. Now that’s #sistergoals right there. Between the funny and inappropriate text messages these two share, you would want in on that sisterhood bond these share.
But most of all, every time I read a Kate Canterbary book, I feel coming out smarter. This lady is the Queen of research, and everything I didn’t know about the stock market, I learned this weekend. Be it how to have sustainable home, a roof garden, how volcanoes erupt, whatever the hell this author puts into her book, I come out with some knowledge. And that ladies and gentleman is how you keep a reader becoming your #1 stalker, errrr, I mean fan for life.
Come release day, do yourself a favor and visit Talbott’s Cove with Brooke and JJ and you too will see it what I am talking about. Again, you’re welcome.
Temptation and Trust
Far Cry may be Ms. Canterbary’s best work, yet. She has a gift for writing dialogue that showcases wit, humor, and vulnerability. The dialogue in Far Cry is stellar and oh so satisfying. Just like the sexual tension between Brooke and JJ. The way these two verbally spar and press each other’s buttons is intoxicating.
Brooke is dealing with a high pressure career, personal baggage, and a bit of a personal crisis. She is trying to shoulder an immense load alone and that pressure has her about to erupt. Who better to erupt on than a grumpy, bearded bar owner?!
JJ is running a successful business and simultaneously trying to launch a new venture that will transform the town of Talbott’s Cove. He doesn’t need the sheriff adding a tenant/worker to his list of item’s to manage. And he most definitely doesn’t need Brooke-Ashley Markham complicating his life.
The heat between JJ and Brooke is blistering. Though they try to resist, the temptation is too alluring. Along the way, they break through facades and penetrate into each other’s hearts with tenderness and passion.
The townspeople of Talbott’s Cove are a nosey, well intentioned, and interesting bunch. Once again, the relationship between Brooke and Annette is #friendshipgoals. Visiting Talbott’s Cove is a great way to wrap up the summer. I highly recommend it, as Far Cry is one of my favorite reads of 2019!
Wowza…do I love Talbott’s Cove….Kate Canterbary has created a world that I want to live in.
I can enumerate on the multiple reasons why I admire Ms. Canterbary’s writing but I want to get to the review of Far Cry.
Yes this is the story of JJ & Brooke, but people, it is SO. MUCH. MORE. More than a love story with smexy times, more than just a humorous story with laugh out loud moments.
The amount of research that Ms. Canterbary puts into each of her stories is so thorough and seems so effortless. She takes her readers by the hand and makes them feel as though they too are knowledgeable in the fine art of gin or hedge funds or the way a small town can both feel claustrophobic and yet so part of your soul.
And I know this is considered a romance but I would love to drive the point home of the friendship between Annette and Brooke. It is amazing, it’s hella funny and it’s real. It’s the true definition of ride or die friends. The conversations between these two are phenomenal and goal worthy!! Seriously.
I loved how JJ could take the saltiness of Brooke and dilute it down to a more palatable taste. Brooke is a force of nature. She takes on the world of “men” with a set of brass cojones that no one but JJ could handle (and handle he does).
If you are looking for a smart, sassy and slightly smutty romance, look no further than this new story by Kate Canterbary!
You can always count on Kate Canterbary’s books to be fresh, interesting, educational, comical, emotional, have a touch of romance and really good heat! Her books never fail to check all those boxes. Let me tell you the streak continues with Far Cry.
This is the third book in the Talbot Cove series and it’s as fascinating as the first two books in the series. However, it is completely different in the storyline. Once I started I couldn’t put it down. I read this book in one day. Yes, it is that good. This time we enter the world of Brooke and JJ.
Brooke is a smart, savvy, hedge fund investor but has left the Big Apple to deal with some issues at home. She’s independent, wealthy in her own right and seems a little salty.
JJ has his own bar business and is looking to diversify and expand his tavern.
These two grew up together but have just now reconnected after not seeing each other for years. They have a fire and ice relationship and have the verbal assaults to back it up. Just like fire and ice the steam they make together is volcanic.
As in many of the authors books we are fortunate enough to reconnect with characters from past books. When you read Kate’s book it’s like meeting up with old friends. It’s fun, comfortable and you know you’re going to have a good time. The dialogue and the text messages are worth the read alone. Watching the interaction even between characters isn’t always smooth and that’s what keeps it so real. With everything going on there’s also a tenderness. One of my favorite parts is the realization that people communicate in different ways. Watching someone get that and knowing that the other person really sees them is a beautiful thing. When you read the book you’ll know what I’m talking about.
I don’t do spoilers. Trust me it wouldn’t be fair to you because you need to get full enjoyment out of this book. You’ll also learn so much. Kate provides knowledge of the area, investment terms,as well as distillery information. Believe me you will leave this book a little smarter…at least I did.
I don’t know how this author comes up with all her ideas but I am so glad she does. I always look forward to the next book. Right now though I’m going to immerse myself back in this book and cherish it again. I have books that are on my go to list for re-reads and Kate’s books fit right into my list, whether it’s Talbot’s Cove, Boston, researching volcanos or lobster boating I always enjoy my visits. You deserve to visit Talbot’s Cove!
Ugh she’s done it again. Kate’s written a couple of characters that I absolutely fell in love with. Brooke Ashley is the independent, successful 30 something who has the best one liners for every situation. Even in the bedroom. Jed is the grumpy barkeep who is full of snark.
This is a fantastic Enemies to lovers romance set in the small town of Talbott’s Cove, Maine. It’s book 3 in the Talbott’s Cove Series and my favourite so far.
You just can’t help but love Bam as she’s affectionately known by Jed.
They knew each other growing up and now they get their second chance as adults but not without plenty of hate F. They are so snarky with each other, the dialogue is impressive. Kate tells the story but delivers line after line of hilarious animosity between the two which turns into a reading Inferno of passion.
Virginia and Jeffrey do an amazing job with the narration. They give us banter, snark and feelings that bring this book and its characters to life.
I would highly recommend this audiobook to anyone who loves enemies to lovers, it’s amazing!!
What happened to my review?!? I know I wrote one. Anyway, I have 88 highlights from this book. I think I liked it. Actually, I loved it. We met Brooke Ashley in Hard Pressed and I fell in love. I want to be friends with her. I just want to be around her. And JJ? Boy, please. I want to live in Talbott’s Cove and just sit outside Annette’s book store and watch my favorite people.
Kate never lets me down. I know that when I read one of Kate’s books, I am going to get several things: a great (!!) story, witty banter, factoids that make me want to go off and study new things (mermaids with this book), strong women and men who love them and support them, hot sexy times, editing (you’d be surprised how much this is missing in some books) and women who show that we are stronger when we stand together.
I love all of Kate’s books but this one is special.
Small towns… Sigh.
The place where no one will forget you you were and you have to fight to become who you want to be. Brooke is doing that. She tries to keep her dad’s secrets and maintain her life without becoming fodder for the gossip mills. I love the quick witted banter between Brooke and Annette. I love JJ and Brooke’s arguments that aren’t arguments. I love how JJ pretends not to be involved with other people and his community while stepping in when he’s needed. I love the Talbott’s Cove characters and what they represent. Thanks for another great read, Kate Canterbary
This was Brooke and JJ’s story in Talbot’s Cove. JJ is a hero to dream about with his rough lumberjack-like exterior and his teddy bear heart- not to mention he is a smart guy too. Brooke is at a tough time in her life. As she moves home to take care of her father, who has dementia, she is struggling with the pain of living with a parent who is gone while being physically present. She is struggling with changing her life from what she had planned for herself and trying to spin all the plates of both lives at the same time. These two know how to push each other’s buttons and they argue, and fight, and come together still battling it out. I appreciate that they build their relationship knowing that things are not always perfect. Yet JJ is always there trying to give her what she needs because he really loves her and understands her better than she understands herself. The bedroom is steamy in this one as I have come to expect from this author, and even as they battle there is always respect and consent between them.
It is good to get back to Talbot’s Cove and see what other characters are up to these days. I really appreciated the friendship between Brooke and Annette and how they are there for each other. I loved how Jackson and JJ have to come to terms with being in a relationship with women who are so close and figure out what that means for their relationship as the men who love them. I felt like the author handled the judge’s dementia and Brooke’s corresponding feelings respectfully and honestly. Having watched a parent fade away like that, I was really touched by how real the depiction was.
I recommend this book.
I love returning to Talbott’s Cove! The sleepy little seaside town and it’s inhabitants have grown on me with each new book in the series and I’m so glad JJ finally got his story!
The broody bartender has been a staple in each of the books in the series and I loved that his moodiness was out in full force this time around. It takes a strong woman to hold her own against a broody & argumentative man, but Brooke always rose to the challenge. These two bickered like it was foreplay, and it was just so damn fun to watch the fireworks show.
And I absolutely loved that we got to see some of our beloved characters again, but, I wish the text convos between Annette & Brooke would’ve been in person. Not that I didn’t like the funny girl chats, it’s just that having full chapters of texting seemed a bit excessive.
The start of the story is quite frenetic, it took me a while to understand the dynamic between JJ and Brooke. After that I was on the rollercoaster with them and feeling all the highs and lows. A thoroughly enjoyable read.
Far Cry by Kate Canterbary is the third book in the Talbotts Cove series and definitely worth reading.
JJ Harniczek is determined to branch out by launching his distillery and expanding his tavern, but to do that he needs money. He knows for a fact he won’t ask Brooke Markham to help him out unless it involves some much needed sexy time.
Brooke is busy running her business and trying to care her father, but she needs a man. Someone who isn’t interested in a relationship or commitment…just someone to have a little fun and then they can both move on.
However, what neither JJ and Brooke expect is how much of an impact they are having in each other’s world and enjoying it.
I’m definitely looking forward to reading more books by this author in the future.
I was given an ARC from the author/publisher. All conclusions are mine and mine alone.
Love, love, love Kate Canterbury’s characters and books!
JJ and Brooke own me. I wish I could yell at everyone to read this book right now.
OMG THIS BOOK!!!
THIS FREAKING BOOK!!
Every time I read a Kate Canterbary book, I sigh and wish it would never end, but this one is my absolute favourite hands down.
The characters
The push and pull
The banter
The texts
The growly man
The wonderfully imperfect woman
THE LOVE STORY
Just keep writing, Kate. Like, never stop writing or I am coming for you to chain you to your desk! Just kidding…. not really…
Seriously though, if you love your books filled with a characters so unique you can imagine them as real people; if you love your women smart and witty and complicated; if you love your man steady and determined and unwavering; if you love your couple to have to work for their love; if you love banter and inner thoughts so funny you’ll laugh out loud… this is the book for you!
100 stars from me.
There were a lot of things that confused me and I was left wondering. But as the story moved forward it captivated me. I’m happy I picked FAR Cry up
