Brooke Markham needs a man. A real good man. But she’s not looking for a keeper. She’s too busy kicking ass, running an empire, and caring for her ailing father to spend time with men who want annoying things like relationships and commitment and…conversation. Brooke knows what she wants and it’s not a future with the growly barkeep. JJ Harniczek needs money. A whole lot of money. He’s determined … lot of money.
He’s determined to launch his distillery, expand his tavern, and put Talbott’s Cove on the foodie tourism map. But there’s no way he’s asking Brooke for a dime. Not before he takes her to bed and definitely not after.
JJ knows where he’s headed and the blonde bombshell isn’t about to change that.
Not until she changes his entire world.
Return to Talbott’s Cove with this steamy rom-com standalone!

This book released today and it’s perfection. It shows you what good love can do to you… What good love can do you. Far Cry is not your typical romance. No instalove here. Hearts and flowers are nowhere in sight at the beginning.
Brooke and JJ absolutely hated each other. That hate is mixed with lust, and we get something extraordinary. Their battles, both in and out of bed, were —. Brutal and seductive at the same time. Just yummy. They’re also both vulnerable and hesitant, and I loved that.
The side characters, of course lend so much to the storyline. We see a lot of the gang from Talbott’s Cove that we’ve grown to love. The friendship between Annette and Brooke is goals. Their banter had me grinning throughout the book, and I know I’m desperately going to miss them.
God, there was so much good in this book. From the first fight, to the first kiss, Brooke and JJ stole my heart.
Have you read a book lately that left you in awe of the writing???? I have that book right here. Brook and JJ’s story is a tug of war on how opposites attract. Brook is so damn strong that she doesn’t want others to know- she has been the good girl but the badass girl at the same time. JJ sees more than tough as nails girl, he sees a beautiful woman needing a pillar.
These two are so damn passionate when they are together. I love how JJ would sit back and just observe then act on his actions. Brooke was AMAZING when she finally let him be that guy for her; she let her walls come down slowly to allow him in. THEN throw in her conversations with Annette, DAMN I love them and all their breakdowns of life and bodily functions.
Love in action is a harsh and dreadful thing compared to love in dreams
Ultimately this couple needed each other is so many ways. It wasn’t the physical connection that they also needed; it was the emotional and mental wellbeing.

Kate Canterbary can’t write a bad book. She can’t even write a mediocre book. What can she write you ask? Let’s just say that Canterbary is only capable of writing a book that is absolute PERFECTION! Seriously, I haven’t read one story of hers yet that hasn’t completely blown me away and left me in awe. Far Cry is yet another successful feather in her cap in a long string of best sellers and it’s one you don’t want to miss. Haven’t read the other books in the Talbotts Cove series? Not a problem! Far Cry reads as a complete standalone where you’ll meet other interesting and intriguing characters in this quaint small Maine town. But I’d be remiss if I didn’t suggest you go back to read them from the start along with her entire backlist because they are all solid gold! But if you’re just jumping in with Far Cry? Well, welcome aboard the Canterbary Express!
I am so in love with Brooke and JJ! Brooke…..this salty, independent, tell-it-like-it-is gal seems to be shouldering the world and she’s looking to unload her stress on a willing male. She’s feisty and witty and a total ball of fire. Her friendship with Annette is so much fun and I love how loyal they are to one another. Then there’s JJ. Oh JJ, how much I love thee! All man-bun, beard, and tatts—this successful bar owner is the perfect sexy match for the wild Brooke. These two grew up together so their love-hate relationship is born from that history. And oh how they love to hate one another! The sparks between these two are enough to ignite an entire forest fire. They are intense and incendiary and I fell head over heels for them in a flash.
Canterbary is the queen of witty dialogue and she brings it in spades in Far Cry. I laughed so hard one moment then my heart broke the next. There’s so much emotion in this story and it’s delivered perfectly. Canterbary’s writing never fails to amaze me. Every time I read one of her books, I learn so much from her. Her plots, her words….everything is well-thought-out and thoroughly researched. Far Cry is no exception. I’d give anything to be able to visit Talbotts Cove and sample JJ’s gin and check out the land that houses Brooke’s family’s estate. Canterbary’s descriptive writing whisked me away to the perfect setting and left me thoroughly entertained through the good and bad. JJ and Brooke, you completely stole my heart. 5 stars
To being with, if you haven’t ever read anything written by Kate, please start here. This is a very witty book, just as all of her books are. This book can be read as a stand alone, but you can also read about our other Talbots Cove residents in other books in this series. And if you love Kate as much as I do you can also skip on over to the Walsh series to fall in love in Boston! My favorite thing about Kate is how real these books feel. The conversation and texting makes you feel like the eye in the sky on someone’s real life! I would hang out with any of these characters today!
If you love women that arent afraid to know what they want and ask for it, this book is for you. Both JJ and Brooke give as good as they get. Brooke is a strong woman who has taken on so much with her father’s sickness and moving back to her home town, that she doesn’t exactly love. And JJ has a lot on his plate with his forward thinking investment into the home town he has learned to love. They both really enjoy pressing eachothers buttons and that sexual chemistry that can only stay above the belt for so long.
Brooke and her bff Annette have the most amazing relationship! You will absolutely fall in love with them and want in on their wine enjoyment. I would spend a weekend with these girls in a heartbeat!
I’m not sure how you cannot love this book. But I challenge you to read it without laughing, lusting and getting a tear in your eye.
Brooke and JJ’s book OMG sooo good. I loved it. The interaction between the BFF on text was just so real. JJ and BAM a fantastic contemporary romance part of the talbot cove series. I look forward to reading more on this series. Absolutely a wonderful book
It’s so great to be back in Talbott’s Cove! It’s small town Maine where everyone knows everybody and everybody knows everyone’s business. All except for sassy, bada$$ Brooke-Ashley Markham’s, aka Bam Bzm, business. It’s a mystery to the townsfolk as to why she has up and left NYC. She is all fire and the person who seems to be in the direct line of fire….JJ Harniczek, the hot, growly lumberjack of man who owns the local tavern. There is a constant push and pull between these two. Poor Brooke isn’t ready for what’s going on between them! Fortunately she has her bestie Annette, who we met in Hard Pressed, to help her along and adding so much humor. Watching JJ and Bam Bam’s story play out is just an absolute joy.
The thing I love most about Kate Canterbary and her books is the way she develops her characters. She makes them real, as if you are a part of their story. You feel their feels. You feel their sadness and fear, their hope and their happiness. From the beginning you root for them to get their HEA. This is another great read by Ms. Canterbary and I highly recommend it!
Far Cry by Kate Canterbary is an amazing book. It is the third book in the Talbott’s Cove series but can be read as a stand-alone.
Brooke and J.J. are firecrackers on their own, but bring them together and you get an explosion of raw need and heat that is unmatched. She knows what she wants and it doesn’t include a forever relationship. J.J. can fulfill her current needs in the bedroom, but she believes she doesn’t need him for anything else. He is more than happy to satisfy her, but as their encounters happen more frequently over time, his want for her grows. He just needs her to open up to him and trust him with her most personal struggles.
I adore all the text conversations in this book. Many of them had me laughing out loud. The dialogue between the character is fantastic and one of my favorite things about Ms. Canterbary’s writing. I was anticipating great things with this book and it did not disappoint. I am in love with Talbott’s Cove and all of its residents.
Bursting with witty banter that makes one feel smarter, sexy consent wrapped in no-holds-barred passion, and a story that’s equal parts light-hearted and heart-wrenching, Far Cry is an absolute joy to read.
Also, please know that in Brooke Markham, Kate Canterbary has written a strong, fiery woman, and given her the kind of aching vulnerability that’s relatable and makes your heart break. Then, she added layers upon layers until Brooke was the kind of three dimensional character who other authors (*cough ME cough*) aspire to write. Gah. I cannot.
This is the third book in Kate Canterbary’s Talbott’s Cove world and her best yet! Brooke is a force of nature (think thunderstorm), she plows through life with such conviction and confidence and yet she feels so isolated. JJ is the owner/manager at the local bar, the Galley, and has aspirations beyond being a barkeep. These two have a history as do most in this small coastal town. Their snippy comments and salty attitude toward each other just fuels the fire that builds throughout this story.
Apart from the heat of the main characters, the witty texts between Annette and Brooke were the highlight and kept me turning pages. It was also comical to see the interaction between JJ and Jackson as they navigate a forced friendship to make the gals happy. The whole book was a breathe of salty air and my favorite so far in this series.
No one…and I mean NO ONE writes grumpy, growly men and smart, strong, kick-ass women better than Kate Canterbary. This is the third book in the Talbott’s Cove series. It can be read as a complete standalone. Each book in the series is about a different resident of the town with their own complete story and HEA. In this book we get JJ, the local bar owner and Brooke, the hedge fund manager who had to come back home from New York City.
Brooke and JJ grew up together in this small town, and while I’m not sure I would ever call them enemies, there is definitely saltiness between these two. They communicate with taunts, insults, and bickering, and it is so entertaining how they bait each other. Through much fighting and anger they come together in such an explosive way. Their chemistry both in and out of the bedroom is sizzling.
Equally amazing is the bloodless sisterhood of Brooke and Annette. Their witty and snarky text conversations are some of my favorite things about this book. Their type of friendship and bond is what every woman needs in her life. These two strong, independent women have nothing but love and support for each other.
This is one of those books where you feel immersed in the story. Not only do you feel part of this town, but you feel all the emotions of these characters. You want to move to this town and be friends with these people. This story is the culmination of all of the best things about Kate Canterbary’s writing…growly men, strong women, witty texts, clever banter, steamy sex, amazing female friendships, and intelligent writing that will make you feel smarter by just reading the book.
If you’ve read the other books in this series, Brooke and JJ are everything you’ve hoped for and so much more than you’d expect. If this is your first time reading this author, I cannot recommend this book or this author enough. Read this book now! Put all the others in your TBR pile aside and dive into Talbott’s Cove. Once you’re done, go read everything else this author has written. You will thank me for it later.
The third Talbott’s Cove story. Brooke and JJ are a most unusual pair. This is a second chance for them after a missed connection in High school. I loved their story. They starts out rough but slowly progress to a crescendo of feelings.
Always a joy to go back to Maine, back to the characters we’ve met in earlier books as well as the chance to see what happens next. There was a big smile on my face when I reached the end.
Joy, beauty and love. Perfect.
Kate Canterbary is a one-click author for me. Her writing is intelligent, her dialogue is witty and she writes characters that you want to be know and be friends with in real life – not because they’re perfect, or size-zero-model-gorgeous, but rather because they’re *not*. They’re REAL. They’re wonderfully flawed in ways that readers can relate to.
Unsurprisingly, Far Cry is another out-of-the-park home run for Canterbary. Brooke and JJ have *amazing* chemistry together and their interactions, not only with each other, but everyone else in town, are a joy to read. Also, hands-down, KC writes THE best text conversations I’ve ever had the pleasure to read in a book – those alone make this book more than worth the read.
Far Cry is one of my favorite books of 2019. Although it can be read as a stand-alone, I do think it benefits from having at least read the previous book in the series (not a hardship, I promise).
Once again, Kate has paired a very strong, brilliant woman with a grumbly, growly man and we reap the benefits. One click this one to and visit Talbot’s cove again.
FAR CRY is Book 3 of the Talbotts Cove series by Kate Canterbary and if I can use a corny pun, it is a “far cry” from your typical hot billionaire/hockey player/[insert your favourite romance trope here]
I say this again every time I review a book written by the Laydee Writer: she is by far the wittiest, most intelligence writer out there and my word is a better place after reading her words
Once again we visit the fictional small town of Talbotts Cove and we’ve all been waiting to read Brooke’s (AKA Bam Bam) story since she first appeared in Hard Pressed as the “blood sister” of Annette. I guess you could say Far Cry is a second-chance romance, but Kate avoids all the cliches and we’re not bogged down in flashbacks and past angst. The interactions between her and JJ as the story progresses are pure magic and you will laugh out loud plus you’ll get all the feels as you follow Brooke and JJ’s journey to their HEA
Along with a great love story, plenty of smart and interesting detail, laugh-out-loud humor, trademark Laydee Writer banter and super hot sexy times, you also get to catch up with the other residents of Talbotts Cove – Annette, Jackson, Cole and Owen and that’s just another reason why FAR CRY is officially one of my top reads of 2019.
It is part of a series but can be read as a standalone, but you’re definitely missing out if you don’t read every single word that Kate has ever written. If you’re looking for smart, sassy and sexy romance, you can’t go wrong with FAR CRY – a definite 5 star read!!!
This book was everything!
I absolutely love JJ & Brooke, they are now one of my favorite couples! I loved Brooke’s hard edges & spunk. I enjoyed JJ handling her as best he could. I was also happy to have updates & cameos from other Talbott’s Cove characters
‘For angry women’, reads the dedication in Kate Canterbary’s newest book, FAR CRY. I was already anticipating this book but this dedication built my interest level significantly.
I was not disappointed. Brooke-Ashley Markham is one of the angriest characters I have read in a long time. Please, don’t misunderstand. Brooke is strong, confident and assertive; she is not a ‘mean girl’ out to consciously hurt people. What she also is, is a product of a life where the expectations of others, plus the responsibilities and promises to others have put her in a position of vulnerability. And she is livid.
I loved Brooke. She is clever, snarky, funny, and entertaining. She is direct, confrontational, and goes after what she wants: ‘I’d like to make a reservation with your dick … later this evening, a seating for one.’
Brooke is also one of the best friends you could have. The scenes between her and Annette (the heroine in HARD PRESSED, Talbott’s Cove book 2), are fantastic. The love, support, openness, fun and banter between them really is the type of friendship women should aspire to. I am officially jealous of fictional characters.
Then there’s JJ Harniczek; a bar owner who keeps himself to himself. Like Brooke, he grew up in Talbott’s Cove. Unlike Brooke, he has made Talbott’s Cove his home. He’s the quiet achiever and I am going to label him the ‘stealth hero’. JJ may be quieter than Brooke but he gives back as good as he gets. On the surface, his and Brooke’s relationship may seem hostile but it doesn’t take long to realise the attraction between JJ and Brooke is fiery hot. He somehow effortlessly manages to get under Brooke’s skin, and their words, their actions, and the physicality of their relationship had me and my reading device steaming.
This is the kind of romance book I always want to read. Give me relatable, interesting characters. Give me wonderful friendships. Give me a steamy romance. Make me want to live in this fictional world. FAR CRY by Kate Canterbary. I cannot recommend it enough.
I chuckled even laughed out loud as I made my way through much of Far Cry. Kate Canterbary’s wonderful sense of humor shines through in the playful, snappy dialogue.Think hilarious text message conversations. This was just a fun romance to read.
JJ Harniczek and Brooke Markham have known each other since elementary school and they mix together about as well as oil and water. They banter and bicker, taunt, tease and tempt one another. Brooke frustrates JJ to no end because she walks around with a bushel basket full of hangups, resentment and prickly feelings. She seemingly only wants him for one thing. Their bedroom antics resemble an MMA match at times. Navigating a relationship minefield is tough especially when one party has a definite end date in mind.
