first read this novella in the Darklight and Daydreams anthology. I am including here the portion of my review that speaks to Fangs and Fairy Dust and Ms. Schultz’s writing (with minimal edits since I don’t believe the anthology is currently available):
There are a few authors I have come to love and will read their work regardless what genre it is; Joynell Schultz is one of those authors. I have never regretted my decision to pick up one of her stories, be it short, long, dark, light, fantasy, urban fantasy, paranormal, mystery… or something in between the lines. Her book Blood and Holy Water was actually my introduction to her work and is what facilitated my openness to genres aside from my norms – I was just so impressed with the imaginative storyline and the wonderful sweet characters that I became an instant fan. The fact that Fangs and Fairy Dust is a spinoff to that book made it a given that I would pick it up and, of course, it was the first entry I read from the Darklight and Daydreams anthology. As I expected, I absolutely loved it! Ryker and Aliza again are characters with hearts and souls that endear them to me. Ms Schultz’s creative and entertaining writing style is fun and easy to read. And the world-building begun in Blood and Holy Water that continues here is engaging and intriguing to me, leaving things wide open for Ms Schultz to expand in numerous directions in the future (already, I am excited to see what she has planned for the sequel to Blood and Holy Water which I believe will be released in the next few months). Needless to say, I found Fangs and Fairy Dust to be worth picking it up in an anthology, on its own, or however one can get hold of it!

Fangs & Fairy Dust: An Angels of Sojourn Spin-Off Novella
Ryker is sent into his painful past to hunt down a possible rogue Vampire. His issue is the place he’s sent, it holds so many painful memories from his past, where he lost three women he loved!! Aliza is attacked while staying in her family home, which has been condemned & will be torn down the next day. She’s lost an awful lot of blood but says she can’t remember what happened, it’s more that she can’t believe it except it!! She just wants to leave the hospital to be there to see her old home one last time before it’s taken away for ever! Ryker uses his Vampire hypnosis to aid her leaving, her massive blood loss causes her to blackout before they even get to his car though!
The Blood Board want the rogue killed & Aliza too if need be. Ryker has come to like her though, she’s lonely & sad which he empathize’s with. He stays with her to try & stop her from being turned, will it be enough??
This wasn’t any where near as good as the first book I read in the original series. It was much flatter, left plot lines open & the characters weren’t as rounded. It was enjoyable enough though.

Aliza goes through a rough time but generally keeps a positive attitude. Ryker is enamored with her. Both are delightful yet vicious. An enjoyable story.
Captivating and delightful…
This novella has so much to offer in less than a hundred pages. I was totally enthralled by this story from the very start right through to the ending (in fact, I really did not want it to end). I found that it had many positive attributes:
• Impressive world-building for such a brief book – I felt I had a real sense of the paranormal politics propelling the plotline forward.
• Wonderful characters that were relatable, fallible, and very human (even if they weren’t actually human). I would love to read further adventures for them.
• An intriguing mystery to solve – just who is the serial killer stalking Dubuque? What is driving them to commit murder? Is it random or is there a strategy involved?
• Plenty of action to hold the readers interest.
• Paranormal fantasy fans will appreciate the variety of supernatural beings involved in the story.
• A satisfying and complete story with a touch of romance and no cliffhanger ending but plenty of possibilities for future stories.
• No graphic violence, no offensive language, no explicit sex
For me, there was no downside. More please.
Awesome plot, great characters, wonderful story. Full,of sadness, hope, despair, drama, danger, mystery and murder. Sent to stop a rouge vampire, he finds a survivor, protecting her, becomes his first priority, but his job is to find and destroy the killer. He solves the mystery, found hope and the chance for love. Will he have to lose her as well?
If you’ve read Blood and Holy Water (and if you haven’t, why on earth haven’t you?) then you already know the hero of this story. Ryker is the vampire who helps Fin and helps us to see that not all vampires are dastardly deviants. This short spinoff is his reward for good deeds I do believe.
Aliza is pretty darned cool. I don’t want to give anything away, so suffice to say, Mrs. Schultz pulled out some stops. These two are perfect for one another and though the story certainly has some sad, you will come to love these two enough to make up for it.
There’s a serial killer loose in Dubuque. Not just any killer, but a supernatural killer that is running rampant. The Blood Board has sent one of their very best, Ryker to handle the situation. After 300 years, he has learned to be all business and get the job done.
He was looking for the latest victim and that is how he meets Aliza. She is unlike anyone he has ever met. He just can’t place what it is that makes her different. All he knows is that he is drawn to her. What better way to get to the killer than to stick by the one person that he knows they will come back too?
Ryker and Aliza have so much to learn. Their new alliance will not come easy and they have a long journey ahead.
Joynell Schultz has taken the supernatural and added her own touch to it. I can see this series in my tbr pile in the very near future. There were a few editing issues I caught, but the writing exceeded my expectations.
Vampires, angels, love, loss, redemption, forgiveness, it’s all in there. And now with Fangs & Fairy Dust, we get…well, you guessed it… fairies!
A quick, thoroughly enjoyable read! I can’t wait for the next book. And I hope we get more of Ryker and Aliza.
Magical Connections – A collection of novellas, short and spin-off stories. They were well edited with interesting characters and suspense and intrigue, and touches of romance. Even the stories that were part of a series, could be read without knowing any other book from that series. There are no cliffhangers or continuations to another book for the rest of the story, while I certainly enjoyed. I’m looking forward to reading more of Ms. Schultz. 4*
Fangs & Fairy Dust – I enjoy Ms. Schultz’s stories, which I discovered in Hexes and Ohs, and was happy to find this collection. This is a well written and believable novella introducing the Angels of Sojourn series, of which Blood & Holy Water is the first book. The main characters, a male vampire and a female human and her mother, are interesting and believable, along with action and dialog. It is fast paced and contains vivid descriptions making everything easy to visualize. Fortunately, it is not a cliffhanger. 4*
The Mail-Order Bride – I read this little story in Hexes and Ohs, my first by her. It’s a new twist on a witch’s tale, which makes for a cute and intriguing romance. Entertaining and enjoyable. 4*
Hidden – A lovely, heartwarming novella about discovery, love and kindness, and loneliness. Searching for her baby’s father leads a pregnant fairy to new adventures and learning experiences, and a vast change to her life, while she shares her godmother skills without her magic. There’s plenty of humor and danger included in this sweet story. 5*
The Enchanted Apothecary – A sweet, romantic, little story where while grieving for her mother, she has suspicions of a male customer and his use of dark magic, and how she confronts him. There’s a good balance of suspense, intrigue and romance. The ending brings a big smile when the truth is told. This story is similar to the romantic stories of the superhero wives world. 4*
One Possible Future – I read this short in the Angels & Magic: Bonus Collection. An interesting, well written, quickly read story between a psychic and a fallen angel and the possible futures awaiting them. The next story is available in the Wings & Wonder boxed set. 4*
Bitten – A sad but heartwarming short story of a mother’s love for her small son bitten by a werewolf. The lengths she went to keep him safe. This is a spinoff from the Angels of Sojourn Series. 4*
Magical Connections end.
