An old lover haunts Nick’s dreams. Nick has no idea why, or why he can’t remember.Weirdest crime scene ever? Check. Guy eaten by a sentient wall? Check. Every shady government agency in existence playing coverup? Check. But is it murder? Nick Tanaka, vampire homicide detective for the NYPD, stumbles into a political minefield when their new Midnight, a rookie vampire cop straight out of the … Midnight, a rookie vampire cop straight out of the police academy, shows up dead inside a high security vault. Morley, Nick’s boss, wants answers, but no one wants the NYPD on the case.
As a favor to Morley, Nick agrees to help, going to his contacts in the military-industrial complex to try and find answers.
Instead, he uncovers a conspiracy led by a murderous fanatic and his band of “blood-purity” crazies, who appear to want nothing less than all-out race war.
Worse, his hybrid girlfriend, Wynter James, is now in their crosshairs, too, as she becomes more and more of a seer operative for Archangel.
Wynter doesn’t want Nick’s protection, though, or his help, and Nick’s vivid, waking dreams about a seer ex-lover confuse everything. When he tells Wynter about the dreams, Wynter freaks out. She’s convinced that old relationship is a threat to her and Nick, even though Nick insists he barely remembers it.

Nick Tanaka, vampire homicide detective for the NYPD, is back in the latest installment of JC Andrijeski’s epically wonderful mashup sci-fi vampire detective series, Vampire Detective Midnight. Fans of the series can rejoice, as Fang & Metal (Book 4) lives up to the high standard set by its predecessors, even if it works perfectly fine stand-alone (though newcomers should know that enjoyment will be enhanced by knowing the backstory in books 1 to 3). Great lead and supporting characters and great writing of a superb plot once again equals a fun abs exciting book with great twists and turns that’s totally enjoyable. Also easy to highly recommend.
NYPD homicide vampire detective Nick Tanaka finds himself in another dramatic story which turns into something both weird and personal. Weird as it starts with a crime scene where a sentient wall eats a guy and personal because one part of the ultimate aim of the whole situation is to kill all vampires and especially to kill him too. Add to that shady government agencies trying to cover things up and you have the perfect murder plot for Nick to solve. It all becomes much more urgent when it becomes obvious that race-purity fanatics want to dispose of all hybrids as part of starting another race war and that Nick’s girlfriend Wynter James is firmly in the crosshairs.
Wow just wow. There were revelations from the past, promise for stories in the future and a complex situation as Nick struggled with everything that was thrown at him both mentally, emotionally and physically. Some parts were like a rollercoaster, some like an unfinished storyline that will be finalised in later books and so much drama I wondered if all the main characters would survive by the end of this book. Well written and easy to read, I loved this story which kept me captivated from the start to the finish. My only issue is how I am going to wait for the next book to be written!
“Fangs & Metal” the fourth book in the ‘Vampire Detective Midnight Series’ by JC Andrijeski is the kind of book that holds you on its grip until the end of the story. What originally began as an spin-off of the “Quentin Black Series” following Naoko “Nick” Tanaka, second chance after being transferred to New York, has become wonderful series on its own, capable to swoon in its bane even the most hardcore fan of “Quentin Black” a very closely second the Quentin throne… don’t tell him… ever.
Nick Tanaka continues to work the night-shift in the NYPD, as a state regulated vampire, a “midnight”, assisting the human police in their “more peculiar” cases. Seemed a totally good idea at the moment, do your job, keep out of trouble and be let alone…. well… best laid plans as you know. Even if Tanaka’s to go unnoticed, did not really work from the very beginning, he is adapting quite well, all things considered, that is after the wall ate the victim…. wait.. what? A “living” wall ate someone? Yes… it cannot get weirder than that…. can it?
As the new rookie in Tanaka’s unit is found dead inside a high security vault, all bets are off. Nick Tanaka has seen some really weird stuff firsthand, but this surely beats them all. The story evolves into a complex conspiracy unearthing links to military technological firms and race fanatics which are fully invested in funding a total race war of unexpected consequences….. and right in the middle of it… you guess it… Nick “please just let me alone” Tanaka. This guy really needs a new fairy-godmother…. or rather not… because following Tanaka in his quest to reveal the truth is a pleasure we surely do not want to live without. Even when the action takes over our own capacity to react coherently to it
JC Andrijeski rare ability to create whole new worlds, alien and familiar at the same time and populating them with interesting characters is unattainable. With a fluid, fast paced, vivid and always delightful writing style, she excels in getting across the action elements without disregarding the more subtle romantic aspects of the story, possibly making Tanaka into one of the most human vampires you would ever come across, as well as one of the characters that have undergo the highest growth since we first meet him in the “Quentin Black Series”.
Previous knowledge of the original series is by not means necessary to enjoy the “Vampire Detective Midnight” Series, I will even go so far as to affirm that you could enjoy “’Fangs & Metal” without any previous know-how of Tanaka, will nevertheless recommend the lecture of the “Quentin Black Series”…. Just because… do you really want to miss on this wonderful world? No, you don’t!
Just a little word of caution, these are wonderful series for mature readers that appreciate multidimensional characters and new perspectives.
