When Joe walks out of Rose’s life, she can’t imagine life without him. But with support from her friends–and an unexpected person–Rose finds her way to climb out of her despair.
After his father’s blackmail forces him to leave the love of his life to protect her, Joe is thrown into the race for Arkansas State Senate. But while Rose has people to help her grieve, Joe finds himself completely … alone–except the one person he detests is the only person who’s offering comfort.

I cannot explain how bad my heart breaks for Rose and Joe. The sacrifices and hurt they are both in makes me hurt for them.
An amazing but emotional read even though this is my second time reading the series. You get a glimpse of Hope for Rose.
It gets better I promise, keep reading it is such an amazing Series with a rollercoaster of emotions.
After such a dramatic and unexpected ending in Thirty and a Half, this novella is a MUST READ for Rose fans! This is an inside look into the minds of other characters in the series. I LOVE that we finally get to see inside Joe’s head! Even though we learn he really is one of the “good guys” earlier in the series, readers can still tell there is mystery surrounding him and this novella answers a lot of questions about him. This book is an emotional roller-coaster as we watch Rose fall apart, put herself back together again and while watching Joe fall apart and then fall deeper and deeper into his self-created pit of despair. Rose readers NEED to read this novella after the chaos in the ending to Thirty and a Half. Do not miss it! It is a page turner!
Thank You for this story. I was a mess of emotions after the last book and this book took me through to the next book. What a way to fall in love with a whole different story. I will always have a soft spot for Joe but felt Rose needed to move on. She has had so much happen to her it’s time to do the grown up boyfriend. I felt Joe was the high school boyfriend we have. first love never forgotten. Alright, lets just say Neely Kate is a great Best Friend. We all need one and glad Rose has her. I’m so happy we got these stories. Denise is great to us readers.
read them all you will love them
Wow what an emotional rollercoaster. This novella explains so much about Joe. I feel bad for him. My heart breaks for both of them. I’m so glad Rose has such a great support system of friends to help her through the breakup!
Before starting this novella or “short story”, I never imagined that I would enjoy it as much as I did. Denise gives you such great insight into each character’s head through their own point of view. You can really see what each character is thinking and feeling, and it makes their characters become even more alive. We learn more about Joe and his family, specifically his father JR Simmons and his political background. JR forces Joe into running for the Arkansas State Senate seat by threatening him with secrets of his past and tumultuous upbringing. Joe and Hillary’s toxic relationship is back on, and hearing his story through his own eyes gives you a brand new perspective on his life. A short read, but packs a big punch! I hope Denise continues to write these novellas throughout the series.
This novella has been great, to close the gaps on a few things. It breaks my heart reading what Rose and Joe are going through. I’ve never been fully on board the Joe train… but I’m on board with the Mason train, if it happens! This novella is showing how much Rose is growing just in a short period of time!
Awesome series!!
Novella’s are a great way to learn things about characters. Denise didn’t disappoint in this one!
I love getting a different perspective from different characters. I feel like this novella fills in the gaps of what is happening behind the scenes. I think we see a side of Joe we haven’t seen before. Certainly worth the time to read!
Falling to Pieces is a short novella that follows right where Thirty and a Half Excuses ends. I really liked reading Joe’s perspective as well as seeing how Rose is dealing with the fallout from the previous book. I like first person books but they often leave out how the other characters are feeling or thinking so it was nice to see the story from another character’s point of view. Some of it was too repetitive but I understand that that was the only way to show Joe’s side of things. It was nice to have a book between the novels and seeing a more ‘behind the scenes’ type of story that does not necessarily fit into the main books. I’m excited to see what type of story the 4th book will bring and seeing how Rose will continue to grow.
I am so excited to read Falling to Pieces. I love that Denise Grover Swank shared Joe’s perspective regarding the final events in Thirty and a half Excuses. Witnessing Joe and Rose’s reactions and feelings really helped make the characters even more realistic. I am excited to see Rose bounce back from this heartache and experience the path her new friendships take in future books.
