Holy moly wow… what a great story!
This is my first book from author JM Miller, and I was seriously impressed. I received an Audible book to review, and I can’t tell you just how impressed I was with this story!
I was able to listen to this book while I was driving out of town so I had plenty of opportunity to listen nonstop. This story just covers so many bases. The main character is different from everybody else in her land because when she was born she was “cursed” by fire and has rough dark skin that only comes off in water and touching her will burn anyone else. She has been friends with the prince, Caulden, since they were kids and now is how lead guard.
After a horrible incident during Princes Night where Caulden was nearly killed, she gets into trouble with the queen for entering the sacred place where she’s been told she’s not allowed to go. Even if she saved hee son’s life. She gets demoted to a lesser guard on his security team, but she keeps thinking about the man she saw in the water that looked just like her.
The queen and princess from another larger country are visiting in order to see if the prince will be a good match for the princes… and thus starts the intrigue, action, and betrayal.
This audiobook was so amazing and the narrator did an absolutely fabulous job keeping me focused on the book.
I just started book 2, and I already know it’s going to be just as great!!
I recieved an ALC for my honest review.
Imagine being different from everyone around you. You don’t just feel different, you are different. Life is hard for Valla being the only one with the burnt skin. Not scarred, but charred. She is fire, and she don’t know why. Then enter a mysterious stranger. He seems like an enemy at first, but the more Valla gets to know him, the more he seems to be an ally. When her life gets flipped upside down, can he help her escape the mess?
I really like Valla’s story. I can tell that it will be fun, and complicated and messy, but well worth my time. I give Fallen Flame 4 stars and I look forward to finding out what happens next!
Fallen Flame (Fallen Flame Series, Book ) is the first book in this young adult fantasy romance series. A intriguing world suffused with adventure, betrayal, magic, mysterious and a dust of romance. The mc Vela tells her story in single pov. Her character is well developed and intriguing. The synopsis is alluring and the plot unfolds seamlessly. I would have liked more details and multiple pov’s to get the other characters thoughts
Amelia Hugh accentuates the fantasy with her storytelling. Her inflection is very smooth, and exuberant. Excellent narration.
I was raised on an island surrounded by the Pacific. I can’t even imagine experiencing pain from just contact with water on your skin. Instant attention grabber for me. So, it’s clear this MC has a hidden past and of course, this author is feeding just enough tidbits here and there to drive me crazy….enough to keep reading….and having to know! Hints at romance but it’s just teasers. All the questions surrounding these circumstances keep me guessing. A perfect way to hook this reader! All my reviews are always voluntarily written.
4.5 Stars
I have always loved JM Miller’s books so I was beyond excited when I heard she was delving into the fantasy genre with not just one book but a whole series. So I was not surprised that I loved this books but I was surprised by how much I loved it. I won’t recap the plot because enough other reviews do that but I will say I found this to be a unique and intriguing storyline from the beginning. It never read slow for me and it pulled me in for the first chapter so I kept turning the pages needing to know more. And Vala was a wonderful character. She’s obviously different but uses that difference to show strength, not just physically but in how she sees herself and her infinite potential as the story progresses. There is this wonderful message that your differences may actually be your greatest asset and it may lead you down paths you never could have imagined before, even opening up new worlds.
The hint of romance in this book was just enough for me. Because of the unique storyline I don’t think the author could give us much more without it seeming forced. Besides Vala needs to focus on self discovery before exploring any one else 😉 I’m sure we will see more exploring in the next book and I can’t wait to read all about it.
There are lots of questions that I am left with at the end of this one but I’m happy it’s not a cliffhanger. And since it’s only book one, I’m ok with that. I’m sure my answer will comen time. So excited for the next installment.
I love reading about the fantasy genre.
This is my first book by J. M. Miller and I loved the story and writing about the character Vala. There is magic and a royal family, fun
Wonderful read. I was drawn in immediately by the sadness that is Vala’s life and the hope she experienced through her connection with Xavyn. I look forward to the next book in the series and seeing what Vala discovers about herself.
