Fear. Overwhelming, all-consuming, life-changing fear.
That’s what Sierra Boisy has lived with since the night she was kidnapped and held hostage by the man she thought she’d loved. If it weren’t for her furtive nightly talks with hacker extraordinaire Colt Allander, she’d be happy to never leave the safety of her childhood home again.
But Colt isn’t letting her disappear without a fight. Fear … may have dimmed her light for now, but if she can find a little bit of courage, he’ll help her burn brighter than she ever has before.
Note : While this book does have a happily ever after, it is best that you read this series in order.

I adore Rachel’s characters. Colt, an Ex-con – computer Geek, imprisoned for impressing his computer skills on the wrong people at the wrong time. He did his two years time in prison and now he enjoys being on the other side and helping the good guys finding answers inside the cyber world he knows, tracking down what the real bad guys are hiding and helping to put them in prison instead. Too bad they don’t need his help right now and he is closing at a local donut shop. But really, don’t worry too much for him because the lovely Sierra, his Star, the woman he lovingly calls Starlight each night when she shows up at his doughnut shop, after slipping out her parents’ window to come have the stale doughnut he saved for her and the dregs of the coffee pot as he closes down for the night.
Here’s the thing. You can read What the story is about in her blurb. What I want you to know is how she makes her people come alive. The little movements she notes of Starlight’s that show just how nervous and insecure she is, and the fear she feels. She certainly has reason to fear. She blames herself for things someone else did and she was part of a tragedy that was bigger than she knows what to do with. She lost an important part of herself. A part only Colt has been able to tease out those late nights over a doughnut, while everyone else in her world looks at her with changed eyes, pity, disgust, or a need to protect every moment of her day.
That part Colt is able to tease out of his Starlight, Rachel is able to write that and make us easily believe two people have found new love and trust and how when they are tested by people who would normally be someone they would turn toward, like brother LeeLee, Rachel was able to make us believe in their trust 100%, that Colt would be there for his Star and his Starlight would in turn always turn to him and him alone.
Oh yeah and it’s scorching hot!
Yeah, she’s that good a writer, guys. Go read her stuff.
Is book four of the Hill City Heroes series and reads as a stand-alone. It was nice to see the characters from the previous books. If you have not read books 1 through 3, you might want to, just so you know the background of all the characters.
What can I say? Rachel Blake has become a one-click author for me. I absolutely love this book; this series is amazing. This author has a gift for making her characters come alive, pop out of the pages, and this reader felt all the emotions. I cried with Sierra retelling her past.
Sierra a strong woman, she just doesn’t understand how strong she really is. Her parents and others in her life are a bit overprotective since her disappearance.
Colt an Ex-con, who happens to be a computer geek and who has a donut shop. He cherishes Sierra’s evening visits to his donut shop.
Will Colt cherish all the facets of Sierra’s personality? Will he help her overcome and recover from her past? Will she be able to trust an ex-con?
This book has all the feels. Ms. Blake has woven her magic once again, with two people from vastly different backgrounds, and who are both damaged in one way or another. This is a must read. You will not be disappointed.
So, I’m not suggesting you should skip to the end, but this book has the ending all of Rachel Blake’s fans have been waiting for in this series. This is finally Sierra’s story, and Rachel Blake has written a strong woman recovering from an unthinkable experience. She is hovered over and patronized by her parents and, in some ways, by her colleagues and friends – but never by Colt. Colt (remember the hacker from the other books?) focuses on empowering her and getting back the Sierra of before, and, frankly, he’s swoonworthy. He allows Sierra to be herself, Little when she needs to be, strong when she needs that, but always cherished. His head-to-head encounters with her father are particularly well written; the reader feels his strength and love for Sierra (his Starlight). The abduction and abuse of Sierra’s friends are revisited; after all, they are part of her story. And, finally, the truth of her experience is spoken and shared, and it rips Cole’s heart out. But is that experience really in the past? Then, as I said earlier – that ending … fans of the series will rejoice!
I received a free copy of this book; my review is entirely voluntary.
Rachel Blake does it again! Another great addition to the Hill City Heros Series! I have been waiting for Sierra’s story! Colt is the perfect fit for her. He has the perfect understanding of balance when it comes to giving Sierra what she needs but still understanding her fears and boundaries. This book is packed with suspense and kept me hooked from page one! Rachel is a storyline wizard as you always are waiting on tender hooks for the next book without feeling like you have been left with a horrible cliffhanger. Definitely a book worth your time.
Fallen Ember is a great addition to the HCH series.
It is centered around Sierra. Throughout the book, we get to know more about her, watch her become a “f*n” adult, and fall in love with her.
It is a fast-paced read but still draws you in. It has all the feels, and hits you in all the right spots. I Highly recommend this book even if you haven’t read the other 3 books in the series… but you totally should read them now!
I can’t even begin to tell you how much I loved this book. I’ve been following Rachel Blake since she came onto the scene and I haven’t read a bad book from her yet. This series is freaking awesome. Ms. Blake has a gift for making her characters come alive and getting the readers to be able to “feel” the emotions while reading the story. Sierra and Colt are wonderful and in the same breath, complicated. I was sucked right into the story and while this can be read as a standalone, I would highly suggest you read the first three books in this series first, just so you know the story of everyone you will see from previous books. I loved how Colt wouldn’t let Sierra hide and how he could make her feel things. Who am I kidding? I just want to crawl inside this book and get to know these characters personally. LOL Go get this book!!! You won’t regret it!!
I enjoyed this book immensely. Most of this book is centered on Sierra, who Colt calls Starlight. Sierra has been traumatized by a former lover and she has not been able to heal. She likes Colt because he sees her as who she is, not who she was. The plot is moved along a few steps, but the story is not yet finished. Sierra and Colt have a HEA, but the book is really a HFN as we do not know the whole story yet.
The author makes this story come alive. I felt every emotion along with the characters. I cried every tear when they cried and I rejoiced with them when they were happy. I’m not sure I could live the lifestyle that openly, even with my friends. The couples who have already had their story told are very open with each other and ‘let it all hang out’.
I am looking forward to the next book in the series. I NEED to know how everything came about and the HEA for all the characters. I received a copy of this book from the author and am voluntarily leaving a review.
