In the new Eve Dallas police thriller from #1 New York Times-bestselling author J. D. Robb, what looked like a lover’s quarrel turned fatal has larger—and more terrifying—motives behind it… bashed in. But when Dallas tracks down the wealthy Upper East Side woman who called 911, the details don’t add up. Gwen Huffman is wealthy, elegant, comforted by her handsome fiancé as she sheds tears over the trauma of finding the body—but why did it take an hour to report it? And why is she lying about little things?
As Eve and her team look into Gwen, her past, and the people around her, they find that the lies are about more than murder. As with sculpture, they need to chip away at the layers of deception to find the shape within—and soon they’re getting the FBI involved in a case that involves a sinister, fanatical group and a stunning criminal conspiracy.

I love J.D. Robb books! This was no exception. Very action packed with terrific characters and romantic scenes with husband and wife . Excellent!
Love the Death series of books by J D Robb!
J. D. Robb is great as usual! I love the interaction between Dallas and her team, her partner and her husband!
Eve Dallas and Rourke. For fans, I need not say more. I liked the book, the characters, and how the main characters always manage to grow. Get this book. Sit down and read it!
I could not put this book down. It was easy to read and the characters were well portrayed.
As always, the “In Death” series remains an exciting peek into the future. I’m starting to wonder if Ms. Robb (Nora Roberts) really does have a crystal ball. The “urban wars” of Eve and Roarke’s youth appears to have arrived in our 2021 reality.
I’m not a huge fan of books that focus on a political diatribe that is not very well hidden, but this one was okay. The NYPSD tackles a cult with a huge following and international influence in this latest “in death” book. Entertaining at times but mostly predictable. Good, satisfying conclusion.
Disclaimer
I checked out this book from the local library using my Overdrive App. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions expressed are my own.
This story was better than the last few books in this series, like a breath of fresh air, if the plot hadn’t been so deep.
I really enjoyed this mystery and it tugged at me, bringing a tear to my eye more than once. You can definitely feel the real emotion coming off the pages.
I couldn’t put it down. When murder and religion clash, it becomes very scary. This is a wonderful story and amazing self-sacrifice.
One of J.D. Robb’s best!
A great read!! This is a well written Eve Dallas book. Amazed Robb/Roberts can turn out such great stories every year, an not just this series.
A self important religious cult leader, repressed woman, some drugged, kidnapped or unable to leave after joining, same sex marriages, interracial marriages are no no’s, women are beneath men and must obey their husbands. This book has it all.
A combination of The Handmaid’s Tale and a solid police procedural, showing J.D. Robb (Nora Roberts) can still bring the magic to this long-running series. Eve Dallas gets tagged on a murder investigation that begins to spiral into a religious cult where “old fashioned values” (racism, homophobia, women as property) are alive and thriving. She’s racing the clock with her team to find the guilty parties and bring them to justice before they can use the massive wealth accumulated from the true believers to cover their tracks.
It’s well done, we see a lot of familiar favorite characters, and some new ones are introduced who may have their own stories to tell down the line. For anyone who’s not familiar with this series, or why the author is “Queen Nora” in romance writing circles, check out Naked in Death and enjoy the ride.
Latest of the In Death series and just as good as all the others.
Love this series-haven’t been disappointed with a single one! Once you start – you are hooked!
Not the author’s best book.
There are more than 50 in this series and all worth reading.
Love all her books. Awesome book. Awesome writer.
2nd or 3rd time I have read.
Nora Roberts has a imagination that just keeps writing more and more story plots. A killing that leads Dallas and Co. along with the FBI to bring down a cult that is so much more than is on the surface. A long read but good.
I love all JD Robb
Still a fan (an audio review)
I’m a huge Eve Dallas fan. And Roarke. Can’t forget Roarke.
Okay, and all the other great characters in this mega series.
This instalment is another great book with plenty of intrigue, lots of suspects, and deep dark secrets that threaten to break open a cult like no other. This book hit a particularly sensitive nerve with me because of the fanaticism of the cult – including their opposition to homosexuality. I find that hatred particularly loathsome and I certainly cheered to see the bad guys go down. Can’t wait for the next book.
