Wilhelm is attacked on Halloween in Washington, D.C. in 2010. As he’s laying there unable to get to his car and knowing what has just happened to him, a little girl defies her mother and gives him a necklace she had made. The necklace, she tells him, is Rafael, an Angel. She tells him it is her lucky angel necklace and that Rafael is a protector. As she’s pressing her lucky necklace into his hand, he notices a small butterfly shaped birth mark on her wrist.
Ten years later, Sam is on her way to her friend Fiona’s parents house for a Halloween party in a remote part of Virginia. As she’s driving along, her car’s engine light comes on but she ignores it. When things start heating up in the car, she realizes that the engine is in the red zone. She pulls off the road but smoke starts roiling from under her hood and then she sees flames. She grabs her phone and flees the car.
Wilhelm, unknowing that the woman who is only clothed in a bra and unicorn underwear and watching her car burn is the same little girl who gave him the necklace all those years ago, offers to help her. He retrieves a shirt from his truck and gives it to her before the police and fire department’s arrive. Sam gets hold of her friend Fiona to come pick her up and thanks Wilhelm for his help. Even though she did think he was quite rude.
Wilhelm can’t get her out of his mind and goes to the forest outside Fiona’s parents home in hopes of meeting her again. As luck would have it, Sam ventures into the woods to escape Brian, one of the other guests and a bit of a hugger, she runs into Wilhelm. Wilhelm takes her to his home where he and his family are having their own Halloween party. It is here that Wilhelm discovers the butterfly birthmark on Sam’s wrist and realizes that she is the little girl that defied her mother to give him her angel necklace.
Although Wilhelm is attracted to Sam, once he discovers her identity he pushes her away. All he can give her is one night, although he wants so much more from her, but bringing her into his life would be unfair to Sam. Sam knows Wilhelm is hiding things from her, but what can she do?
