Tops in his Paramedic Academy training… incredibly curious to learn about this whole new world he didn’t know existed.
Would it get him killed?
She’d been at this job a while and was less than enthused to be given a new probie. There was always a lot going on, but Brynne has something on her mind. What happened to her old partner?
In the dark of night…
…a society few humans know, thrives.
And someone wants to bring them down.
You’ll love this supernatural medical thriller, because the fast-paced life of an EMT is better in the world of vampires and mythical creatures..
Get it now.

It’s an interesting and original premise though some may find the medical procedures and processes a little too detailed. Was looking forward to something different, which this was, but this first book is strictly a set up for the series. It ends very abruptly just as you get to the crux of the plot. It’s like they took a book and decided the best spot to split it in two so that you will buy the next one. The second book literally starts five seconds after the first book ends. Basically, this one is just an introduction to the main characters and their jobs, that’s it. That’s my reason for only rating 3 stars.
Horrible trite “urban fantasy” that reads like really, really, REALLY bad fan fiction. Horribly bad fan fiction.
This book was a new take on medical drama in a storyline. Paranormal characters makes it stand out even more. My only complaint is that often too much time was spent on the minutiae of procedures that didn’t always add to or progress the story
Dean Flynn starts his first EMT position assisting his partner, Brynne, struggling with a werewolf in the middle of a change. When this shock wears off, he finds he’s been assigned to an emergency unit that deals with “Unusuals”; individuals that are not human. The book is imaginative with vivid characters, and a twisting plot. A fast, enjoyable read.
Sorry I’m a nurse and it just took everything I had to finish this book. The medical detailed explanations were too nit picky–even the regular layman doesn’t need that amount of detail to get the idea. Less time spent on that and more on storyline would be much appreciated.
Great concept. Different kind of world. Enjoyed
The author couldn’t deliver the book his title & blurb promised. His EMT background allowed him to deliver enough cases for a short novella. The infighting between the pro providing services for “others” and the haters is preachy and basically boring filler. Skip the book.
cliffhanger
Dean Flynn is to be commended for his open-mindedness for his unusual patients. Thanks to Jamie Davis for speculating on the existence of “others”.
I was very disappointed in the non-ending. Just a ploy to buy another book. I hate it when an author feels they can’t just resolve a story before leading you to the next book
It was an okay sci-fi book. It didn’t inspire me to buy the next book in the series.
Book didn’t download in a readable format font too small and unable to change it .
I listened to this on audiobook. I have to say, I’m still trying to get used to listening to books rather than reading them. I don’t know if I would have liked this better if I’d read it. There is a lot of medical jargon and the narrator seemed to have problems with it.
The story is of an EMT who has just graduated and gets assigned to a location that serves “unusuals,” or paranormals, which he always thought were fictional. He struggles coming to grips with who, or what, his patients are but realizes they’re really have the same kind of issues as anyone else. While we hear about his patients, there is also an underlayer of suspense as a black SUV is following him and there are elements in society who want to destroy the unusuals.
Endless useless alphabet detail about medical care and a plot like “This is Spot. See Spot run.” It’s a cliffhanger as well.
Completely different from any other paranormal series I’ve ever read. Wish the series hadn’t ended.
Extreme Medical Services: Medical Care on the Fringes of Humanity by Jamie Davis is a unique take on an urban fantasy. New paramedic Dean Flynn has just graduated at the top of the class and unexpectedly gets assigned to a little known ambulance Station U. As Dean soon learns, his patients aren’t what he expected. Instead, they run the gamut of paranormal beings; not just the normal vampires and werewolves, so this makes the story especially interesting.
The author does a great job of world building where the paranormal society exists, but is hidden from most humans. Station U along with certain hospital nurses and doctors take care of the medical needs of the supernatural patients. Dean’s EMS partner is Brynne Garvey and she coaches him as needed and is there to help him adjust to this previously unknown part of his city.
Dean does show some character growth and you start to get a feel for his motivations to become and paramedic. However, I did not get this from most of the other characters in the book. Hopefully, this will be resolved in future books in the series. One of the drawbacks of this book is that it does leave you hanging at the end. What happens to the final patient in the book? Why drop a major plot twist at the very end? It would have been a better beginning in the next book.
Jamie Davis applies his knowledge as a nurse, retired paramedic and medical educator to the book making it a learning experience for the reader as well as an entertaining paranormal medical thriller. If you do not enjoy learning about emergency medicine, then this is not the book for you. Despite being irritated by the cliffhanger, I had to give the book 3.5 stars rounded up to 4 due to my overall enjoyment of this unique take on an urban fantasy.
I thought it was very cool that it was coming from a paramedics point of view. Basically paramedic go help the supernatural community and it is a good book. I recommend it
A random free book made me want to read more of this series. I am loving it so far. Can’t wait to get the next one.
