This #1 New York Times international bestseller tells the epic history of Israel’s birth through the eyes of two generations of Jews as they fight to reclaim their homeland. Leon Uris tactfully meshes together the story of two 19th century Jewish brothers who seek refuge in Palestine with the 20th century story of how Israel gained its independence after World War II. Rich in historical accuracy … accuracy and compelling characters, this literary classic sheds light on the long history of the Jewish diaspora, their struggles for liberation, and the costs of war. One of Uris’s best works, Exodus is just as relevant today as it was when it was first published in 1958. The 1960 film adaptation starring Paul Newman was nominated for three Academy Awards.
“Exodus is an international publishing phenomenon–the towering novel of the twentieth century’s most dramatic geopolitical event. Leon Uris magnificently portrays the birth of a new nation in the midst of enemies–the beginning of an earthshaking struggle for power. Here is the tale that swept the world with its fury: the story of an American nurse, an Israeli freedom fighter caught up in a glorious, heartbreaking, triumphant era. Here is Exodus –one of the great best-selling novels of all time.” – From the Publisher
“Passionate summary of the inhuman treatment of the Jewish people in Europe, of the exodus in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries to Palestine, and of the triumphant founding of the new Israel.” – The New York Times

The battle to bring Jews to Israel and the birth of Israel. Uris is a great writer and the book just reads beautifully
I read this years ago and it still stays with me. It is the story of how Israel became a nation and where her people came from and how they got there. Extremely moving. I’ve read it a couple of times since and every reading reveals something new.
One of the first books I read about Israel – about 50 years ago. Still a favorite.
I read this 55 years ago and the story is still with me. Another MUST read.
Leon Uris is the greatest writer I have ever read
A truly wonderful epic about the formation of the nation of Israel following WWII!
This was the first book I read as a young person about the Holocaust. It was quite amazing how those people survived. It was a book I’ll never forget.
One of my best reading experience s. So realistically tragic. The brothers were actually haunting. Their characters were monumental my unforgettable.I will probably read it again!
Read at age 14 and was gripped with Zionist fever for awhile. 55 years later I wish they would get rid of Netanyahu. What a crook. But it was beautiful back then
Should be mandated reading for all high school students! Too bad there are too many uninformed morons to ever let this happen.
One of the best books I ever read!
A realistic tragic view of the plight of the Jews during World War II. Left me feeling so sad about mankind in general.
A finely researched historical novel about the settling of Israel after WWII, also includes information and story lines abt WWII. He is a renowned author and anything he writes is wonderful.
Beautifully written book about Israel obtaining its independence. Characters that you will love. Some you will lose. One of the best pieces of historical fiction I have ever read. Just don’t read this if you are wanting a light read. You will gain a deep understanding what the Israelis have gone through to obtain and keep their homeland.
The exciting, inspirational story of the founding of the state of Israel.
Although it’s fictionalized, it’s a great accounting of Israel’s birth. Filled with heartbreak, triumph and stories that tug at the heart.
Total Classic that is also ageless and is a interesting and informative story about historical times that resonate today too. This is on my all time favorite books list.
One of my absolute top 5 ever.
Well, gee. This is the book on which Otto Priminger made a movie of the same name, starring Paul Newman and Eva Marie Saint. The book is fiction, but based on actual events that surrounded the founding and emigration issues leading up to Israel’s 1948 War of Independence. Prior to the book & movie Americans were indifferent on the issue of …
I read this many years ago- great story about the beginnings of Isreal, young love, tragedy and moving forward. And Leon Uris always provides a page turner.
