This #1 New York Times international bestseller tells the epic history of Israel’s birth through the eyes of two generations of Jews as they fight to reclaim their homeland. Leon Uris tactfully meshes together the story of two 19th century Jewish brothers who seek refuge in Palestine with the 20th century story of how Israel gained its independence after World War II. Rich in historical accuracy … accuracy and compelling characters, this literary classic sheds light on the long history of the Jewish diaspora, their struggles for liberation, and the costs of war. One of Uris’s best works, Exodus is just as relevant today as it was when it was first published in 1958. The 1960 film adaptation starring Paul Newman was nominated for three Academy Awards.
“Exodus is an international publishing phenomenon–the towering novel of the twentieth century’s most dramatic geopolitical event. Leon Uris magnificently portrays the birth of a new nation in the midst of enemies–the beginning of an earthshaking struggle for power. Here is the tale that swept the world with its fury: the story of an American nurse, an Israeli freedom fighter caught up in a glorious, heartbreaking, triumphant era. Here is Exodus –one of the great best-selling novels of all time.” – From the Publisher
“Passionate summary of the inhuman treatment of the Jewish people in Europe, of the exodus in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries to Palestine, and of the triumphant founding of the new Israel.” – The New York Times

I first read this book when I was in middle school in the early 1960’s and have read it several times since. An up-close look at the foundation of Israel.
I read this book 60 years ago and still remember its impact on me. It is the story of a ship carrying 4,500 Jewish immigrants from France to Palestine on July 11, 1947. The British prepared a massive naval and military force to turn back the refugees. The true story of Exodus helped turn the tide of sentiment toward the hundreds of thousands of …
This brilliant novel of the founding of Israel is as wonderful today as when it was written. The characters Ari ben Canaan and Kitty are etched in my heart.
I learned a lot while reading a very good book.
Leon Uris can write one on one scene and epic moments with adroit skill. He is a master of his craft. It is a great way to learn history and what the conditions were like.
Terrific.
I read this book many years ago, and it left it in enduring impression on me. This book spans the time from World War II to the creation of Israel through the lives of several interesting characters.
Epic story. Tough read.
I thought it was a great book telling the story of the fight to keep Israeli state against huge numbers of Arab soldiers. Also it explored the relationship of the main character with the leader of a nearly Arab community and because they were friends, that Arab leader was killed by anti-Zionists. It should be read by everyone to open their eyes …
One of my favorite books when I was in high school.
Read this years ago and its story still has an impact
It’s been a million years since I read this, but I distinctly remember it was GOOD. Even better than good, it was GREAT! It’s on my physical book shelf ~ I cannot give it away . . . decades later! I might even reread it!
I read this many years ago, but it has stayed with me. A long book, and not a quick read, but great characters that you come to care about. You become invested in their struggle to survive and build a homeland in Israel. Interesting relationships between the characters, especially Arab/Jew. An enlightening novel that brings you through WWII and …
