This #1 New York Times international bestseller tells the epic history of Israel’s birth through the eyes of two generations of Jews as they fight to reclaim their homeland. Leon Uris tactfully meshes together the story of two 19th century Jewish brothers who seek refuge in Palestine with the 20th century story of how Israel gained its independence after World War II. Rich in historical accuracy … accuracy and compelling characters, this literary classic sheds light on the long history of the Jewish diaspora, their struggles for liberation, and the costs of war. One of Uris’s best works, Exodus is just as relevant today as it was when it was first published in 1958. The 1960 film adaptation starring Paul Newman was nominated for three Academy Awards.
“Exodus is an international publishing phenomenon–the towering novel of the twentieth century’s most dramatic geopolitical event. Leon Uris magnificently portrays the birth of a new nation in the midst of enemies–the beginning of an earthshaking struggle for power. Here is the tale that swept the world with its fury: the story of an American nurse, an Israeli freedom fighter caught up in a glorious, heartbreaking, triumphant era. Here is Exodus –one of the great best-selling novels of all time.” – From the Publisher
“Passionate summary of the inhuman treatment of the Jewish people in Europe, of the exodus in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries to Palestine, and of the triumphant founding of the new Israel.” – The New York Times

What’s a book you’ve been meaning to reread? Exodus
I read this one when I was still in high school. A well written historical novel based on true facts about European Jews during WWII escaping from walled in ghettos and concentration camps to fighting for their new nation – Israel.
I found this book very informative as to why so many people …
Back when I was younger I sat up for a day or two, glued to this great book.
I really suggest reading all of Leon Uris books as they see history as it could have happened and always have your attention. They do not contain unneeded descriptions like so many of Michael Connelly ‘s books so it leaves room for pertinent background or a needed relevant information.
I read this book 40 years ago. It is still critically current to today’s world. Those who don’t study history are doomed to repeat it and this book is filled with history.
I gained a better understanding of this real life event in our world. It covers the political and religious sides of the story of the battle for a homeland. Made palatable by the characters whose lives are inescapably intertwined.
Read years ago and enjoyed.
A must read!
A love story set in the turmoil of the founding of the State of Israel. Depicts personal sacrifice of the men and women who fought to establish a Jewish homeland.
A classic, about the events that unfolded before the establishment of the Jewish homeland of Israel.
Loved it and the manner in which the “new” State of Israel was fought for and won is a great inspiration to me.
I read this so, so long ago. I was into reading Uris’ books Those I read were fascinating and real.
I read this years ago but it hangs in my memory. It’s about the Jewish conquest of Palestine right after WWII. If historical struggle interests you, try this book.
Excellent story set in the years leading to the state of Israel.
The most influential book of my adolescence!

It almost made me want to convert to Judaism!
I read this book years..decades…ago. Exceptional!
Page turner!
I read this many years ago and loved it. A heroic era in history. The characters each come from different backgrounds but come together for a common goal.
I read this book in high school and recently read it again more than 30 years later. Enjoyed it as much the second time around. It’s an excellent story, well written, and gives a taste of history that we all need to know about and remember.
