Dr. Annabelle Schwartzman has finally found a place to belong. As the medical examiner for the San Francisco Police Department, working alongside homicide detective Hal Harris, she uncovers the tales the dead can’t tell about their final moments. It is a job that gives her purpose—and a safe haven from her former life at the hands of an abusive husband. Although it’s been seven years since she … escaped that ordeal, she still checks over her shoulder to make sure no one is behind her.
Schwartzman’s latest case is deeply troubling: the victim bears an eerie resemblance to herself. What’s more, a shocking piece of evidence suggests that the killer’s business is far from over—and that Schwartzman may be in danger. In this pulse-pounding thriller from award-winning writer Danielle Girard, a woman must face her worst nightmare to catch a killer.

This book gave me chills!
Medical examiner Dr. Annabelle Schwartzman is called upon to investigate a woman’s murder and is shocked by similarities to her own past that she can’t ignore. Is her psychotic ex-husband behind the crime?
Seven years ago, she managed the impossible and escaped the controlling man she’d married too late to save her unborn child, something she’d have to live with forever.
Now he was back.
Let the games begin.
This story is an intense thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat until the very end. The tension amps up continually and had me gasping more than once!
I questioned Annabelle’s original weakness, for want of a better term, in staying with a man who obviously had no respect for her, but this was later explained with insight into her self-absorbed mother.
I give Exhume 5 lovely kisses- A great start to a crime series!
Wow, what a thriller! I did so much reading during the pandemic that I came back to this incredible book and re-read it. Loved it more the second time and saw the clues and cleverness of the author that I had missed. Danielle Girard is so good.
Exhume is an astonishing thrill ride, a shocker that has left me thinking about it long after this second read. You’ll find yourself cheering this brave, intelligent woman who has managed to escape an abusive marriage – only to have her twisted, controlling ex continue to come after her and stop at nothing, including murder. This was a thrill ride for me – again, after the second read! A very exciting book – five stars!
Good Read!! I really liked the storyline. I’m not a reader who loves to give spoiler alerts. If it’s Good it’s Good!!! You don’t need to know any more than that!! Enjoy!
As a medical professional, I’m SO very impressed with the quality and authenticity of the research required for this series! It certainly doesn’t end there- Ms. Girard weaves an INCREDIBLY engrossing story from many threads into a multidimensional work of literary art… So much so, that I simply HAD to purchase the second in the series and will purchase the third as soon as it’s published in July. This may not sound extraordinary, but trust and believe- it is. Of the nearly 3,000 Kindle books I own, I can count on one hand the number I’ve actually paid money to own!
Fantastic plot! I love the Dr. Schwartzman series!

Great start to a new(to me) series!
Excellent characters up against a despicable bad guy! This volume examines and explains Dr Schwartzman rounding her out and letting us learn to like her, a lot.
It was a very good exciting book
Well written, fast paced, and lots of twists and turn. I enjoyed this read. The author had the story moving almost on page one and the action and twists didn’t stop until the end. It was a little hard to believe that the evil doer could be as diabolical and perfect as portrayed, but if you suspend your disbelief it was a wild ride. A female medical examiner has been stalked and terrorized by her estranged husband over a period of several years. She has relocated several times, but he has always managed to find her. A murder occurs and during her routine investigation the ME notices some strange connections to herself. After that, things get a lot more complicated. I thought some of the decision making of the main character towards the end of the story was a little weak, but overall this was a “page turner” that I would recommend.

This book kept me up all night to get to the end, which was totally unpredictable! Everything is not what it seems!
The author knows how to grab your attention and keep it! This book was fast paced but slow enough to build the intensity of the situation at hand. I enjoyed the medical aspects of this book as well as the psychological insight into the ‘villain’s’ mind. I am into the next book, “Excise” and am enjoying the continuing story of Dr. Annabelle Schwartzman and her police friends and another great mystery.
What a rollercoaster of action and intricate threads finally coming together at the end! A nice ensemble of cops and what a sick demented evil villain. This book kept me up at night, I couldn’t put it down.
i liked this book. It took some time to get into the meat of the story cause there was a lot of background story to get through. But it was a gripping tale. I’m reading the next book in the series. Knowing her style of writing I now appreciate the background info knowing I’m in for twists and turns
I enjoyed this book so much I went on to read the next two in the series. There will be a fourth book but not available until 2019. (I preordered it!)
The premise is an abused wife being stalked by her sociopathic husband. She had escaped him for 8 years but he has found her. He stops at nothing to torment her. In addition to dealing with her stalker, she has just been told she has breast cancer, then her beloved aunt dies. This is such a good read I ordered the second book before finishing the firsy.
I love Girard’s Schwartzman series and was anxious to read this 3rd book. It did not disappoint, though it did frustrate. There are 2 plots: the murder investigation that Hal & Anna are involved in; and the story of Anna and her demonic ex-husband. Warning: This book is a cliff-hanger. My hope is that Girard will not wait too long for the next book!
This book was impossible to put down. It follows the story of a woman who is escaping her abusive husband. She has moved across the country to work as a medical examiner for crime scenes. What she finds at the crime scene she is called to investigate is that the girl who was murdered looks almost exactly like her, wearing a copy of the jewelry that she wears, and smelling like the perfume her husband used to make her wear. What follows next is a heart pounding chase to prove that her ex-husband is stalking and killing these girls, eventually to try and stalk and kill her as well.
Danielle Girard has successfully created one of the creepiest antagonists ever. Spencer McDonald will stop at nothing to control his wife, Annabelle, including kidnapping, torture, and murder. Fortunately, Anna finally tired of living in fear, stands up to him and manages to get him put away. Punctuated with interesting and complex characters and driven by non-stop action, this is one of the most nerve-racking thrillers I’ve read in a long time. I highly recommend this book but be prepared, it’s a nail biter!
It wasn’t a book that I generally like
