TJR has been one of my most anticipated authors. No, not just this book or one of her many other highly acclaimed novels, but Taylor Jenkins Reid. Period. She was this author, who I heard about EVERYWHERE, and I do have a few of her books on my shelf, on my wishlist, etc… but I haven’t actually picked up. Why? Honestly I was scared she wouldn’t live up to the hype. You know what I mean? It’s like meeting your childhood idol, only to find out that they are truly the worst and not this fabulous, iconic, goddess that you had envisioned in your head. Looking at you, Christina Aguilera. Anyways.. I was nervous. But when i stumbled upon Evidence of the Affair, I couldn’t pass up this quick, novella. At only 86 pages, I figured this would be the perfect way for me to finally meet TJR… and boy, was I right.
.
All I can say is WOW. WOW! How can someone pack so much emotion and depth into 86 pages? I don’t have the answer, but this book is just . I chose to listen to the audio version using my @sudio headset. [Love them! And they are PINK!] I will tell you, if you have been THINKING about dipping your toes into the audiobook world, this book is a great one to take a listen. It’s approximately an hour and a half (that’s without speeding it up, which you can do with audiobooks) and the readers are awesome. This story focuses around 4 characters: Carrie, David, Janet, and Ken. The story is completely told through letters written to and from these characters. Each character is voiced by a different reader which makes it so easy to follow!
.
If you are looking for a quick read that truly tugs at your heart strings, Evidence of the Affair is the book for you. If you’re like me, and have been nervous to pick up a TJR book, don’t wait any longer! Do it! Pick it up! You won’t be disappointed.
Though just a short story- I loved it!
Quick novella — perfect for a Saturday afternoon.
Story presented as alternating letters. This was a Prime Reading option (free) so I snapped it up as a combination audio/reading project.
My subjective review: I enjoyed reading this short story very much. The correspondence between the four parties was different than anything I’d read before, and it held my interest with ease.
It seems difficult to believe a man or a women would not confront their spouse after their revelation of infidelity, but just because a character doesn’t do something we may do, doesn’t mean it’s not possible. I see and read many reviews readers leave for the books they read, and I am still surprised to see constant comments, insinuating a situation isn’t possible. We tend to believe if it is something we couldn’t or wouldn’t do, then someone else wouldn’t either.
What I’ve come to realize over my many years of experience in life is that anything is possible. Just because one person might not react in a particular way, doesn’t mean another wouldn’t.
So, with that said, this is a definite five-star read for me. Nicely done.
Wow! What an ending! I want more!
Carrie decides to sit down and write a letter to David, telling him that his wife is having an affair with her husband. Basically that’s all there is to say without spoiling too much.
I will say that I hated Ken & Janet. At times I was mad at Carrie and David as well. But I loved Carrie at the end and still a little mad at David for, in my opinion, being dumb.
This was a fast easy interesting read! I did really enjoy it.
All’s well that ends well? I don’t know how else to respond to this story. I feel that it does prove that relationships require work and you get out of them what you put into them.
Short story that cuts to the chase and shows the affects of an affair on the other spouses, Carrie and David. I’ve never read a book like this. The back and forth letters – the deceit of their spouses, Ken and Janet – and the friendship that grows with the two on the sidelines. Not gonna lie – I loved and hated how it ended and was hoping for more…maybe someday Ms. Reid will bestow upon us another short story reflecting what the future holds.
I normally don’t read short stories, and I’m glad I read this one. I chose EVIDENCE OF THE AFFAIR because it is an epistolary story, and I love epistolary stories. It’s about letters exchanged between a man and a woman who have discovered their spouses are having an affair together, it’s engaging, sad, thought provoking with a surprisingly lovely ending.
“It seems as if you see me exactly as I wish to be seen. There is no greater gift than that.”
A woman finds letters evidencing her husband’s affair with another woman. She writes to the other woman’s husband, looking for…answers? sympathy? comfort? He writes back, and they forge a bond based upon their unfortunate circumstances.
I loved the use of letters between the characters to reveal the story. It served this particular time, place and situation well. I also loved the reference to Daisy Jones as soulful comfort music, which is exactly as I’d imagined it.
After reading “The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo” I knew I wanted to read more by Taylor Jenkins Reid and when one of the booktubers I follow mentioned this I immediately picked it up. I am so glad that I did. This little novella is told entirely through letters between two married couples. When David Mayer gets a letter from Carrie Alsop informing him that she has found out about an affair between her husband and his wife a friendship grows between them. This was a lovely novel and Carries and David’s growing friendship throughout the letters is actually very sweet. I don’t really have a lot to say as the novel is short but I would definitely pick this one up. It is free to read on kindle or listen to via audible with kindle unlimited. I chose to listen to the audio version and I think that made the novel even better for me. Pick this one up. You won’t be sorry!
I love Amazon Prime’s free books, a great opportunity to find new authors. Today, I found a new author to follow, which equals a very good day! The audio version is everything. The storyline has its sad moments, but yet some are liberating with a twinge of hope. The narration is superb. My emotions are everywhere, that ending released butterflies in my chest. This is my first contact with Author Reid, but will definitely not be the last.
Evidence of The Affair is a great short story told entirely in letters. Taylor Jenkins Reid does a wonderful job with character development in only 50 pages!
I absolutely LOVED this short. I couldn’t put it down!
After I received an ARC for Daisy Jones and the Six, (Which I loved), I then read The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, (again LOVED), I purchased this novella.
It was a short story, (I read it in about 45 min) about a woman discovering her husband is having an affair, she starts to write to the husband of her husbands mistress. It was written just as you would write a letter to someone. I liked it, and it had a little surprise at the end. Check it out. I am in love with this author by the way, her books rock!!
