“This series is one that is so unique and intriguing because it is a look at history and myth that has not been done and that no one else could come up with making this truly a Donna Grant masterpiece.” – Michelle, The Romance Witch reviewsNew York Times bestselling author Donna Grant “skillfully melds history and legend” (RT Book Reviews) in a thrilling series – The Kindred. To live in the light, … live in the light, they hunt in the dark…
Traumatized by the most devastating event imaginable, Synne has one thing on her mind: ridding the world of the Coven. The witches and their evil allies took away everything she held dear, and not even her beloved trees can quell the rising grief and darkness seeping into her soul. However, when she crosses paths with a sexy-as-sin Scotsman, her way of thinking changes, and she discovers things about herself even she wouldn’t have guessed.
Lachlan MacCullum, next in line to rule his clan, never expected to have his world turned upside down. But the moment he lays eyes on the gorgeous Hunter, he knows he will never be the same. In addition to making him feel things he never thought possible, she opens him to a world he’d nearly forgotten about. Now, he’s consumed by the need to help her. And win her heart.
With Sybbyl on the loose and out for domination, and another bone of the First Witch close at hand, reaching the Varroki and joining forces is paramount. Unfortunately, that’s easier said than done. Evil has a way of thwarting even the best-laid plans. At least they have each other. But for how long?

This is the 4th book in the Kindred series and while it can absolutely be read as a stand alone, I recommend reading the previous books first because there is a bigger story ARC that is a common thread throughout the series. That being said, in this one we get Synne and Lachlan’s story in this one. Synne is a hunter who has been trained to hunt and kill members of the Coven. On her search for the Varokki she meets Lachlan, who is stunned by a woman hunter. He has his eyes opened to the other things that exist in the world, and joins her on her quest. Neither is aware of what this journey will bring them or how it will change their lives.
Ok so let me start by saying that while I like this series, it isn’t my favorite of this authors book by any means. This is more of a medieval fantasy romance series than a typical paranormal romance, so bear that in mind while reading this. But with that being said, they are still great reads! Synne is this kick butt woman who isn’t afraid to do the hard things that are necessary in order to defeat her enemies and bring justice to others. Lachlan has been brought up knowing that he is the heir to his lands, but he also has a strong sense of right and wrong. And he definitely isn’t afraid to step and do what needs to be done either! I really enjoyed this one and I was slightly iffy on whether I would like Synne or not. I am glad that I was proven wrong on that score! You definitely get the good vs evil and action that you would want in this type of book, along with some moves ahead in the battle. I really can’t wait to see where all this series takes us!
I really enjoyed this story. It is the first one in the series I have read but I am definitely going to go back and read the others. Even though I haven’t read the others I wasn’t lost. I think Donna Grant does a good job of giving enough information so you understand what you need to from the backstory. For the best experience I would suggest reading them in order.
I liked how the characters were developed. Well rounded characters make a good start great and I think that lies here.
I hope you like this story as much as I did.
Happy reading!
Intriguing, addicting, this book sucks you in from the cover to the last page. The 4th installment in Donna Grant’s The Kindred series, we meet Synne and Lachlan. Their immediate chemistry, whether acknowledged or not is incendiary. The plot line is unique, we get snippets of the history of the series – so if you’re diving into it blind, you don’t feel lost, the characters are outstanding. This is what, as a reader of many of her books, we expect from Ms. Grant. One click this – you won’t be disappointed. While you’re at it, one-click the first 3 in the series so you feel complete.
Synne’s story opens as she is riding to find the Varroki. Synne is plagued by a tremendous loss as she recalls the attack at her home killing her adopted family and she is also haunted by her past where she is unable to remember anything before being brought to the abby. As Synne travels to the north she meets a man named Lachlan who escorts her across the land. Synne talks of her past, who she is and her desire to fight the coven. Lachlan finds he is drawn to her and believes in her and her path and decides to help her fight Sybbyl and the coven. Their fate seems to be intertwined.
Synne learns of her heritage, her parents and of her grandmother, it also explains her deep fear of the Gira. Lachlan also retrieves the blood skull and learns he is the warden of it and must keep it out of the hands of the coven.
As the war with the witches grows closer and the odds seems to keep stacking against them, The Hunters and the Varoki continue to persevere.
Looking forward to the next installment to see what happens next. Donna Grant is an excellent writer and by far my favorite.
I received an ARC from the author for my honest review.
Amazing. Didn’t want to put it down.
As someone who is familiar with Donna Grant’s works, I have to admit that I’m unfamiliar with The Kindred series. I received Book 4, Evernight as an ARC and I was unsure if I was able to follow the storyline. Fear not, Ms Grant ensures that there was brief outline from previous books explaining to those of us who aren’t familiar with this series. It was done seamlessly and for that I really appreciate the consideration.
The Kindred was an enjoyable book for me to read with interesting characters and storyline. As always Ms Grant is a master at weaving fantastical stories of from mythologies. I will definitely be doing some back reading to catch up with the world building.
This series started a few years back, and if you read it, you will see how much Donna Grant has grown as an author. You can read this book without having read the first 3 books, as Donna gives a little of the history of the Hunters, the First Witch, the Coven, plus a few other magicals. Synne is a Hunter, trying to make her way across unknown Scotland in search of the Varroki. The Varroki are battling the Coven, along with the Hunters. Lots of details are given the reader so that the story is entertaining and satisfying. Synne’s story is resolved in this book, but the overall arc that started in Book 1 continues. If you’ve not read any of Donna Grant’s books, this one will give you a taste of her writing. She has an extensive catalog, and I’ve enjoyed reading all the varied books. This one in no exception. Looking forward to the next book. I received an ARC from the author, and this is my honest opinion.
This is the first Kindred book for me. As I opened to the first page, I wondered if I was going to be lost. Jumping into the fourth book in a series isn’t always a wise thing to do. With that being said, there’s so much backstory inside the covers of this book, there’s no way anyone could get lost. And for that I’m going to say…Well done Donna Grant.
Now, let me tell you about Evernight without any spoilers. [Hopefully].
Synne is a Hunter. Even though she’s human. This girl is bada$$ and doesn’t let the fact that she thinks she’s ordinary hold her back from kicking butt and taking names.
She’s also a little broken and alot angry and I fell head over heels for this girl.
Evernight is one of those books that sucks you into the story and doesn’t want to let go. It is also one of those books that you just know something bad is about to happen and you don’t want to keep reading, but you can’t help yourself. People who read alot will get that.
Anyway, this book is chock full of action and feels. Please don’t miss this one.
Thank you Donna Grant for the opportunity to read and review this book.
Great book. Did not want to put it down.
I am a big Donna Grant fan and I can’t imagine myself not reading her books again and again. I don’t know how I missed this amazing series though! Boy, Evernight has a very good plot, amazing characters and even though I haven’t read the previous books (yet!) it was easy for me to catch up. Donna explains things so beautifully that everything is understandable. The story is very interesting, with witches, highlanders, hunters and many more characters. I loved Synne and Lachlan and to be honest I don’t usually like the female characters of books for some reason but with Donna I didn’t have such an issue. I don’t recall disliking any of her girls, including Synne. You should definitely read this book and give this series a shot! You will not regret it..I didn’t.
This book was really good. I think the fact that I read book #3 in the Kindred series not that long ago really helped me to enjoy this one since it takes place a few weeks to a month or so from the end that one. Synne was such a great character. She was fighting the grief in the loss of the only family she had ever known and trying to fight a war that she knew was coming. I found the meeting with Lachlan interesting and how he just accepted what she was saying and even went with her even though his clan needed him. It made for a great storyline and the twists and turns that it took definitely kept me wanting to read more, no matter how tired I was. You don’t want to miss out on this story.
*I received an ARC for an honest review*
This continuation of The Kindred series follows Synne, a woman trained from childhood in the art warfare and the bow, for one purpose, to end The Coven. A woman who has lost everything at the hands of her enemy and who is willing to risk it all to avenge her family. Well written, I couldn’t put it down. I loved the adventure of the journey, the dialogue, interactions, and chemistry with Lachlan (our Hero), the secrets revealed, hating the villain, glimpsing the future, and rooting for a happy ever after. I laughed and cried. All the feels. Donna Grant feeds your appetite and leaves you hungry for more.
Donna Grant does it again!! I don’t know how she can write so many books that just has been sucking me in but I am not complaining because I just love her books
First off this is book 4 in The Kindred series but really you can read it as a stand-alone but I personally think you should read them all.
This book is fantastic. I love this story and I love that I was just sucked into this one right away.
As always I can’t wait to read more books by Donna Grant.
This is a great story that adds much to the series. The story contains loss, friendship, betrayal, hate, revenge, magic, and lots of revelations that reveal truths and answers questions. But above all things it shows love is stronger than anything.
Synne is a Hunter and is grieving because of everyone the Coven has killed. She is heading for the Vorraki while searching for revenge. As she is taking comfort from her beloved trees, a handsome Scotsman comes upon her.
Lachlan is the son of a laird and wants to escort her through their land. After hearing Synne’s story he decides to help her find the Vorraki. But the road they travel will be filled with heartache, pain and so much love.
I can’t wait to see what is in store for Amir and Malene.
I received an arc copy of this story and chose to leave my honest opinion.
I am a long time reader of all things Donna Grant – except The Kindred Series. Well that was until a week ago. I am an all in type of gal so getting an ARC of a book in a series you have never read means some serious binge reading! I have read Everkin, Eversong, Everwylde & Everbound because I didn’t want to get half the story. Evernight is the story of Synne and Lachlan. Lachlan is a Scottish warrior who comes across Synne – a hunter, on his families land while she is trying to find the Varroki. There is a connection between them immediately. This book is more than their story though. I highly recommend the whole series. Now I can’t wait for the next one!
This is Synne’s story. We pick where we leave off in book 3. Synne is heading to Varroki and meets a Highlander along the way. He is more than meets the eye. Lachlan is going to Laird but he must help Synne first. We find out about Synne’s past the one she doesn’t remember. If you have enjoyed all the other books you will enjoy this one too. This one has heart, love, sadness and laughter. I really look forward to the next book. I am hoping everyone comes together at one point, we shall see.
*I received a copy of this book from the author and am voluntarily giving my honest opinion*
This is the 4th book in the Kindred series. It features Synne – a Hunter- who is on her way to the Varroki (a mysterious society of witches and warlocks) to get help in fighting the bad witch Sybbyl, and Lachlan – a Scotsman – who aids her in her quest.
I’m really enjoying this Medieval fantasy series by Donna Grant. It has Hunters, knights, witches, warlocks, and good vs evil. The female characters are strong and fight for what they believe in, while the males trust in them and willingly fight at their side.
I received an advance copy of this book from the author via Bookfunnel. My thoughts and opinions are my own and without bias or favor.
Dynamo Donna does it again! I have been waiting to get my hands on the next Kindred book, and the wait was definitely worth it!
Evernight is the fourth in The Kindred series by Donna Grant and can be read as a standalone in the series, however to get the full goodness of the series I do recommend you read in order, it’s just that good!
Synne is on a mission. A mission to avenge the only family she has ever had. Trained as a Hunter, to kill witches, Synne is on a journey to end the Coven. A group of witches, lead by a powerful witch hellbent on making the world hers, Synne must first find the bone. Through a tragic past, a bitter family she can barley remember and a future she is unsure of, Synne has one thing on her mind, find the bone, stop the witch, avenge her family. What she was unprepared for was Lachlan.
Lachlan MacCullum is the son of the Laird of his clan, next in line to take over for his family. A normal day out on patrol of his clans lands, leads him to Synne, the Hunter, a woman he has never seen, but now knows he can’t turn away from. When he hears her story, he can’t help but want to aid her in her quest. When his family ties come to light the pair soon learn fate is not just something from the story books. Their connection is strong and passionate, their chemistry sparks the pages to life and brings the book to life. When the past is revealed and secrets uncovered, Synne is given a glimpse into her past that changes her world for the better. With a powerful witch on their heels can the couple finish their journey? Will they find what they are looking for?
I can’t tell you the joy I received from reading this book! I love all of Donna’s work, but this series is near and dear to my heart. The characters are so much fun to get to know and the story line flows, plot twists and both old and new characters are developed even more. Each new book is like meeting with friends you haven’t seen in a long time. 5 out of 5 star review and a definite recommended read from this fan!
3.5 stars
Having not read any of the previous Kindred series, Lachlan and Synne’s story was my first introduction into the medieval-type world of magic and witches. I enjoyed the concept, loved the magic battles, and found all the characters brief backstories really interesting.
Grant is great at giving pockets of information from previous books and I believe this can easily be read as a stand alone.
I received an advance reader copy from author. This is my honest review.
As a huge fan of this author, I have no idea how I missed this series. So yes, this is the first one I have read. Of course, I have to read the others now. This was amazing!!!!! Just enough of the backstory is provided so I wasn’t lost. It also wasn’t too much that it confused or bored me. As I jumped into the world of mid-evil magic and hot Warrior, with that Scottish brogue you have to love, I was hooked. Synne and Lachlan had great chemistry. I have so much I want to say, but don’t want to spoil it. Here goes……There is action, suspense, twists and turns, betrayal and so many surprises. Ms. Grant also managed to add in the romance we love. The characters were strong and all brought something important to the bigger picture. I can’t say this is a cliffhanger, but the story definitely left me wanting more. Loved it!!! I am voluntarily leaving my honest opinion of an advanced copy I received.
