Received this book in my December uppercase box.
I thought this was an amazing story, one that kept me turning pages long after I should have been asleep. Britta was an amazing character to follow. Seeing how she tries to find the person responsible for her father’s death, while still mourning his loss. As the story progresses you watch her learn and grow as a person. I loved the depth that was created in Britta. Just when I was thinking I knew what was going to happen, I would be surprised.
The ONLY reason this didn’t get more stars from me is because of the cliff-hanger. This is a repeated problem for me in books. You cannot have a book that is part of a series and not allow it to stand alone. I feel like any book you pick up shouldn’t leave you with such huge questions. This story tied up quite nicely, but left a HUGE question unanswered. Anxious to see how this series continues.
Britta Flannery is the daughter of a Bounty Hunter to the King. She grows up learning how to hunt and catch not only animals but criminals alongside Cohen who is apprenticing with her father. As they grow up, she falls in love with Cohen but he is destined to replace her father in the privileged spot as Bounty Hunter. When her father is off on a job, he is murdered, leaving Britta alone in the cabin she lived in with her father. Starving, she illegally hunts on the King’s land and is caught. Thrown in the dungeon, she is given a choice. Die for poaching or hunt her father’s killer. It sounds like an easy choice, but Britta wavers because she is told all evidence points to her one time friend Cohen. Believing their evidence she begins the hunt, which turns into a journey of discovery and learns more about herself than what she’d imagined.
Ever the Hunted was beautiful on the outside and on the inside. Seriously, the cover is gorgeous and the book was gorgeously written. The story felt like a hybrid Fairy Tale – Fantasy novel and the words on the page were written lyrically helping create that feel. Taking place mostly in a forest the story had elements of Red Riding Hood, Sleeping Beauty, and Snow White, however it was not a copy or re-imagining of any of those novels, but a unique story with only the feeling of a fairy tale element. As with other fairy-tale and fantasy novels I’ve really enjoyed, this was more than just a love story, it was an action adventure novel with magical realism. Our heroine, Britta, comes to a realization about her feelings for Cohen, but also discovers the depths of power hidden within herself.
Having said all of these wonderful things, was the book perfect? It was perfect up to a point. I will not spoil the ending, but I will say that there was an unexpected twist that I still can’t decide if I liked or not. It felt like the author decided at the very end to turn this into a series when it could’ve very easily been a stand alone novel. That one twist took me out of the world this author created and made me go.. Huh. So because of that, I’m only giving this novel 4 hearts. Until that twist, I was enraptured by the story and world and would’ve given it a higher rating.
This book was provided to me as an uncorrected digital proof by the publisher, via Edelweiss, in exchange for an honest review.
It took me a while to get through Ever the Hunted. It’s not a bad book; I just didn’t feel terribly invested in the story until more than half-way through. I can’t put my finger on it, but something about the relationship between Britta and Cohen left me cold. I don’t like Cohen, perhaps because of his domineering attitude. There was never a feeling of anticipation in regard to their relationship, just a bland inevitability. Like I said, it’s not a bad book; there were scenes that made me cheer and others that nearly made me cry. The world-building is adequate, and secondary characters, such as Enat and Tomas are well-written. The book ended on something of a cliffhanger, but not in such a way that I feel manipulated into reading the next book in the series. I may read the sequel, as the ending did intrigue me. If I do, I hope for more actual magic to occur, rather than just being talked about. I would recommend this book to teenagers who enjoy fantasy novels involving a quest.
3.5/5 Stars
It was really hard to rate this one. I was able to get through it for the most part, mostly because I was waiting for something exciting to happen. I think Ever the Hunted was a good attempt at a solid novel, but it fell short in a lot of ways as well. I think this book focuses too much on the romance and relationship between Cohen and Britta. The plot kinda fell to the wayside and took a backseat. The plot moved really slow and things that were revealed and happen never really excited me. The world was interesting and I was intrigued by the Channelers. I’m still on the fence with my emotions for the two main characters. You get to see quite a bit of their background learning to hunt together under her father and revelations she learns about her own past.
I’m not going to say I didn’t like this book because it kept my interest for the whole book, something I wasn’t sure was going to happen. At the same time there was a lot lacking from this story as well. I’m not sure I’m interesting in continuing on with this series, but maybe I’ll pick it up someday soon.
Ever the Hunted is a young adult novel set in a new world that Summerill created. The main characters, Britta and Cohen, are strong and vibrant. The writing in the story is beautiful, yet powerful and you’ll be ensnared in this cunning plot with no way out but to turn the pages.
Britta is resourceful and smart and I love her “strong girl” attitude. The romance building between Britta and Cohen is uncertain and keeps the tension rising as they struggle to solve a mystery together. The plot behind a brewing war and a young king’s life is tumultuous and riddled with deception. Every time I thought I could anticipate what would happen, there was another twist in this story.
I enjoyed the mystery in this story, and I especially enjoyed that this book is clean–no sex or graphic violence. I’m comfortable having my teens read the book. My teen is incredibly picky with books, and often complains that they drag in the middle, so I can’t wait to have her read this book next!
I loved the ending because it was satisfying, yet left a definite promise for more and I can’t wait to read the next book in the series!
I wasnt a fan of how it ended. It was a good book but it seemed slow going in places
I liked everything except for Cohen. And some of the predicatbility. But mostly Cohen. Don’t even get me STARTED on this cocky piece of spoiled lettuce
He was so controlling, full of himself, and selfish. His brother, Finn, just felt like a last minute add-on to make him seem redeemable. Which he wasn’t.
Britta deserved better than THAT THING. Also, Leif was adorkable and honestly the best part of this whole book.
Very great story. However, grammar, structure, and word choice could have been better. It had a slow start, but you will definitely fall in love with Britta Flannery! A fun concept, and interesting read.
I actually wasn’t sure about this book. I saw this a few times on YouTube and around social media and fell in love with the book cover. I know not to judge a book by it’s cover…but I am a big sucker for books with hand lettering for the design. I also love fantasy and stories where characters go on a quest. I really enjoyed this book, in fact, it was so good that I read it in three days. It was fast paced and had tons of great action. I also appreciated a main female character who was strong and clever. She knew who to get out of horrible situations and never let anyone tear her down. I also enjoyed her interaction with the other character Cohen who is her friend and who was accused of the murder. I thought he was a really interesting character and the opposite of Britta who tends to be on the rational side. Lastly, I enjoyed getting a quick glance at the world building. The world that has medieval elements along with magic. I totally recommend this book to anyone. If you are interested click on the links to check it out. Until my next book review keep on reading.
