I was impressed with the way the author made the supernatural seem natural with a cast of anti-heroes that remind me of people I grew up with. Great adventure.
In Evening in the Yellow Wood, author Laura Kemp delivers a genre crossover that expertly combines mystery, romance, and paranormal events for a unique, can’t-put-down read. Filled with lush descriptions of northern Michigan and well-drawn characters dogged by family secrets, this multi-layered debut novel starts out as a mystery and ends as a thriller, packed with twists and turns that will leave readers on the edge of their seats. It keeps you on your toes, right when you think who did what, well, you actually don’t, because of the twists and turns in this awesome book! I loved reading this book, turning page after page until about the last 2 pages I slowed myself down, and only because I did not want the story to end! When I received this traveling copy of Evening in the Yellow Wood from the Kemp Camp, I jumped in with both feet not knowing how deep the water was going to be!! You might think your family has dark secrets, but you haven’t heard anything like what is buried and unburied in Justine Cook’s family history! I had to come up for air more than once as this story unfolded while taking one haunting turn after another!!
Laura Kemp’s creative genius in her debut novel cannot be understated. I have never read a story quite like this. The genre crosses many lines adding to it’s uniqueness. I am also blown away by her way with words and phrases such as: “how his eyes skimmed the line between blue and gray – a sky that couldn’t decide” or “the girl with the lightning storm hair” and “listening to the sounds a small town makes past its bedtime-“.
I am anxious to read the next “chapter” in Justine’s life. I understand there WILL be more. I may just dip my big toe in first next time and prepare myself for the shock – loving every word!!!
Suspenseful, Hypnotizing, Absolutely Outstanding!
Wow! This book is one of a kind! Laura Kemp sparkles with creativity, and this book shines! I was so hooked into this story. It completely consumed me, I just couldn’t stop. Laura Kemp gives these characters so much life. They literally fly off the pages and become real. I care about them, I felt for them, I was scared with them. They brought out so many emotions in me.
Simply put…. Evening in the Yellow Wood was edge of your seat greatness!! It is definitely a book you will want to read.
Justine’s father went away on her 12th birthday. When she gets older, she decides to find out where her father has gone. Her search leads her to Lantern Creek. There she finds her father has another family with a girlfriend and a half brother. When girls who look similar to Justine are found murdered, Justine needs to figure out what is going and quickly as her life is in danger. This book had it all! Mystery, secrets, and love! I thoroughly enjoyed this book and read it very quickly as I needed to find out what was going on!!!
This is a different kind of book from any book that you have ever read. I can absolutely guarantee that. Like the weather in Virginia, if you don’t like what it’s like…just wait because it will change. And change it did! It was romance, mystery, paranormal, fantasy and almost magical in its portrayal of the plot and its characters. By the time I finished reading it, I was convinced that I had read an adult fairy tale that was mystical and magnetic in its attraction. Justine headed to northern Michigan to try to find her runaway father who had abandoned her when she was a pre-teen. What she discovers is that she has an autistic half-brother because her father had a second family. She also meets the deputy sheriff who is trying to follow the clues to solve a murder mystery. Finally, there are the strange visions of people who are there but not there, an enemy that is unseen but more dangerous than you can imagine. There are plot twists, weird appearances that I had to read twice to make sure that I had read it correctly and then there were the quirky characters. From the bartender to Justine’s grandmother, the characters are just strange enough to make me want to know more about them. When I started reading the book, I wasn’t sure that it was my kind of book. Nevertheless, I persisted and after I was about a third of the way through, I was hooked into the story of Justine and her search for the truth. The author reeled me in like a reluctant fish who doesn’t even know the hook is in its mouth! All in all, I look forward to reading the next book in the series because I think I’m into a little weird now. After all, everyone needs fairy tales with happy endings in their lives, Well, kind of happy endings…I can’t say more because I would give away too much. Fans of smorgasbord novels will really enjoy this book, and fans of regular books like me will be hooked!

This was a great read. You will root for the main character, Justine, along with her little brother, to prevail using her supernatural powers. I loved the relationships Justine built along her journey. Can’t wait for the next book by this Michigan author!
Justine Cook has always wondered what happened to her father all those years ago. When she sees a sign that she is sure is meant for her she quits her job, packs up and moves “up north”. What she expects and what she encounters are two totally different things.
Wow! Have you ever read a book that completely consumed you? You needed to know what was going on, what going to happen and how it was going to end? Evening in the Yellow Woods had me fixed on my couch for hours because I could not put it down. If you love mystery, romance, fantasy, loveable characters and a ploy that keeps you guessing I know you will love Evening in the Yellow Woods.
I loved “Evening in the Yellow Wood” by Laura Kemp. The Michigan girl wrote a killer book for her debut novel! I’m a Michigan girl, too and I’m so proud of Laura Kemp. Maybe I am partial but, you’ll have to read the book to find out for yourself.
The story is outstanding. There’s a little romance, a little folklore, a little magic and a lot of intrigue. This book will keep you turning the pages to see what happens next. I couldn’t put it down. Laura’s ease with the written word shines in this book. She has captured the essence of her characters in a way that will stay with you for a long time.
I don’t know what I was expecting when I started this book but, my expectations were blown out of the water. This is so much more than a murder mystery or a girl looking for her father. Take my word that you will want to read this book!
Justine has always wondered where her father went when he left her and her mother right before her 12th birthday. Ten years later Justine sets off to solve the mystery of her father’s disappearance- what she finds leaves her with more questions than she started with and puts her in the middle of the small town of Lantern Creek. Will she finds the answers she is looking for or will she jeopardize everything she cares about? This book is Laura Kemp’s debut novel and it is a wonderful mix of mystery and romance with a dose of the paranormal thrown in! Not what I expected when I started reading it, but I was enchanted! Great read!
This novel has a mystery, a few romantic encounters, a twist of supernatural, some magic, a tinge of comedy, and suspense. Sometimes family relationships are complicated, especially those steeped in folklore. Especially when many people have a piece of the puzzle but no one has the complete puzzle. This story kept surprising me at every step. Great read.
A daughter’s need to find her father is a powerful one. Laura Kemp sends her main character into a world of danger, a world beyond what normal people would expect!
“Evening in The Yellow Woods” is a novel chocked full of suspense, mystery and paranormal activities! You think you know what is going on, then *** BAM *** the story twists and your taken down another amazing path!
I enjoyed Kemp’s easy style of writing that leads you through this original take on what one would do for family. Kemp tosses in plenty of spectral phenomenons in this book to keep any ghost loving reader hooked from beingin to end!
Evening in the Yellow Wood is an exciting read that had my attention from the first page. Justine Cook was abandoned by her father when she was twelve years old but her mother did not ever tell her why. Never having any closure, Justine is shocked, ten years later, when she sees her father in a newspaper photograph. Although her mother was against the idea, Justine went to the town of Lantern Creek in search of the badly needed answers that she has always had, but what she finds is something more mysterious and eerie. Having found a roommate and new friend in Holly, Justine decides to tell her what she is in Lantern Creek to find. With a new job at a local lodge, Justine finds more clues to her father there but the more she finds out about him, the more questions she has. Meeting a brother that she was unaware of and falling in love with the town hunk, Justine’s life begins to get more complicated than it ever has. Being able to hear her autistic brother speak to her through his thoughts, seeing ghosts and having visions of murders that happened centuries ago, Justine is in the fight of her life, trying to save those that she loves. Will she be able to handle the answers of why her father left? Author, Laura Kemp has truly written an unpredictable page turner that will keep the reader poised on the edge of their seat! I cannot wait to see what this remarkable author has in store for her readers next!
