Not a stand alone book. When I first started reading the House of Closed Doors series, I was bored and not interested. I was glad I got the e*book from BookBub for free, but I’m not sure exactly why I couldn’t get into the book. I’m glad I kept reading as I enjoyed the book and have since purchased and read the next two in the series. Throughout the series, the author uses words and terminology consistent with the time, which I enjoyed. There were several words I knew and some I looked up. A few times, I had trouble finding the words in the Kindle dictionary and felt another word would have been another choice. I love series and the depth to which character development can be taken – and JS does a great job developing the characters and helping them grow realistically throughout. My only word of advice to potential readers is that these books are a very strong series, but I think if you started with either Book 2 or Book 3, you would feel lost. Overall a great read and will be interested in checking out more of the author’s books.
This series is a wonderful story of a naive, self-centered young woman who doesn’t always make wise choices but shows strength of character and determination in spite of hardships. I enjoyed “watching” her mature. I also enjoyed watching a lifelong friendship develop into love.
I loved this series! I enjoyed reading them a lot
Eternal Deception is the second in a series by Jane Steen. I was not disappointed as I read the next chapter in Nell’s life as she went off to the frontier to have independence and a new start for herself, her daughter and her friend Tess. She had sworn off marriage, but will she reconsider? There are secrets to be revealed and mysteries to be solved. I definitely recommend this book. It was a great story that kept me interested and I am so glad there is another book after this one to reveal the next chapter in Nell’s independent life.
Loved this second book in the series and so very happy I didn’t live in the 18th century….good God I would never be able to survive. Great job.
While the background love story plays, the real plot of continued consequences for a momentary lapse abounds. Once again Ms. Jane Stern develops such believable characters that one would swear she is writing biographies. But dry they are not. Lots of twists to keep the reader interested and happy. And yes, I am one who would have loved to know the contents of the letter!! Can’t wait to see where Nell ends up.
When Nell follows her friend Mrs Lombardi to Kansas and takes a job as a seamstress she didn’t know she was jumping from the frying pan to the fire. Learning to become a responsible adult from an impulsive young lady, Nell encounters suitors to be and not to be, one a villain, one an impulsive young man and a love she could never have. I can’t wait to start the last book.
Not quite as good as the first book (mainly because I spent a large portion of the time wanting to just shake her for being so dim), it’s still a very solid second novel. I’m really looking forward to the third!
