Essential oils & the Bible, yes, they go together…
Essential oils have been an interest in my family for several years now. However, much of the information out there is either; secular, New Age, or just a promotional of a specific brand. Essential Oils: God’s Extravagant Provision For Your Health caught my attention because of the author’s Christian worldview and her belief that oils were made by God for our benefit. What I hoped for was good information from a Biblical perspective and not just some New Age stuff that can give a person the creepy-crawlies. And that is exactly what Terri Secrest delivered.
As with nearly all essential oil information that I’ve read I am skeptical of a few of the claims BUT I am also firmly convinced that essential oils are of great benefit and people should utilize them whenever possible and practical.
One thing that I will very respectfully disagree with the author is the assertion that as essential oils are plant based, and if properly used, can’t have negative side effects. If you are allergic to the plant you can be allergic to the oil, this is something I know from personal experience. I’m allergic to the mainstay of all essential oil collections, lavender, from synthetics to high quality oils to the plants my mom has in the garden. My word of advice with anything is to try small amounts, find out what you can have and what you can’t, and do as the author suggests and buy the highest quality oils you can. Oh, and on the opposite end of the scale, my mom has had great success with lavender. Also, while dogs can have some oils, DO NOT put any oils on your cat.
One of the things I really appreciated is that while the author does talk about the influence of a well known figure in the world of essential oils on her health journey, she does not promote any specific brand. Instead she gives readers a list of things to watch for when finding the right brand for themselves.
My favorite parts of this book were the sections on the use of oils in the Bible, the importance of anointing and praying, and the studies that have been done on how much our sense of smell really does affect us. These were things I already knew but she dug a little deeper into the topics.
I just want to say a couple of things about the layout of the book. If you are reading on a Kindle without a color screen you will miss out on a lot, there are quite a few really lovely and inspiring photos throughout the text. I really liked how Teri Secrest clearly delineated each topic, from her own story to which oils are good for which things to cooking with oils, in clearly defined chapters which went into detail and then followed it all up with a handy glossary that makes for a good quick-guide.
To sum it up, Essential Oils: God’s Extravagant Provision For Your Health is a really interesting book and it’s one that would be a good fit for anyone interested in essential oils, whether you are a beginner or have been using them for awhile.
(I received a copy of this book from the author/publisher. All opinions are entirely my own.)
Essential Oils: God’s Extravagant Provision for Your Health is a good beginners guide to incorporating oils into your everyday life. Teri Secrest, the author has written a comprehensive guide to help someone get started or become more comfortable with using oils. She includes some common oils and their traditional uses. The book is unlike many oil books as it does not promote a single oil company and their blends, instead it gives you benefits of individual oils and suggestions on how to blend oils for your own uses. Biblical uses of the oil along with the verses that they are mentioned in. Secrest shares testimonials of her own experience with oils as well as others experiences, she also gives recipes and ways to use oils in your cooking. This book would be good for beginners or veteran oil users alike. I look forward to using some of the oils and combinations in the book for my family
I received a complimentary copy for this book from Celebrate Lit, this in no way influenced my review. All opinions are my own.
MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK
Essential Oils are a very important part of my life. I’ve been a member of the company the author mentions in her book for many years. They certainly do not take place of a Dr. but there are so many benefits to using them.
I enjoyed reading what this author has found in her research all over the world of the types and uses of essential oils. I found many things in this book were new to me, so I will definitely be trying some of her suggestions. Terri Secrest goes into vivid details about how to get started with the oils, and throughout this book she will introduce you to many oils and tell you of their uses. There is a wealth of information in this book. Several things I already use are some of the oils for pain, anxiety, trouble sleeping, cleaning, and I refuse a lot of the oils.
In addition to all of these things in the book, the colorful illustrations are amazing and beautiful. If essential oils are something you are interested in, this is a good book to start with.
A copy of this book was given to me by the author or publisher. I am not required to write a positive review. The opinions here in this review are totally mine alone. I am disclosing this with my review in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255.
What an incredible book! You will want to have physical copy for your library since, if you are even slightly interested in essential oils, you will be using it on a regular basis. The author has a vast amount of knowledge about essential oils and how they can be used to promote good health. Each system of your body is highlighted with appropriate oils that may help you enhance and maintain their functions.
I appreciated the various ‘recipes’ that were included in the book. Wonderful healthy dishes with pictures that made me hungry to look at them. As well, the suggestions for oil blends that would encourage one’s well-being. This certainly is a reference book that I will keep handy for years to come!
I received an ARC through Whitaker House and CelebrateLit. The comments and impressions are my own.
Essential Oils
This book covers what Essential Oils are good for your health and which one to use. I like the index in the back of book that breaks down which oil to use for different illnesses. Some of the oils I have heard of and some I have not.
I found the book very interesting and enjoyed learning about the different oils. I loved the relationship to the Bible and all the verses used. I just kept wandering what if a person is sensitive to the smells. Are these scents mild?
If someone wants to learn about Essential oils for their health this is a good book. Also some great recipes in the hardback version.
I received a complimentary copy of the book from the publisher through Celebrate Lit. This review is my own opinion.
I am somewhat familiar with this topic but was intrigued to learn more. It amazes me how many oils are available today to help with different problems like headaches, pain and colds. I did like when the author says, ” You should always check with your doctor before making any major health decisions.” That statement reminds me that this book is another way to look at health and the benefits of oils, but for us to be smart in deciding what is best for us. A good example is if you break a limb, you should go get it looked at. I think this book helped me not to be so close minded and look over the facts .
The book is beautifully illustrated with pictures that pop off the pages. Everything is described in details and offers an array of oils that can be helpful. I am the type of person that is a bit wary of new things. If someone tells me to try something I am hesitant to jump in right away. The book helps me to examine what the benefits are of oils and how to use them.
The author fills the pages with different oils and scents and gives examples of how to use them. I liked the bible references and how they tie oils to everyday life. Have we missed what God has put before us as healing oils? That is a question I kept asking myself throughout the book. Native Americans used plants and oils to cure sickness without medicine that is commonly used today. Essential Oils are beginning to prove helpful and more people are turning to oils as a way to overcome colds, stress and depression.
The chapter on “How to Select a Brand ” was very helpful to me. I am lost when it comes to this subject and appreciated the insight the author gave. Just like most products there are many to choose from. The author breaks down what different oils are used for and how much should be taken. I enjoyed learning more about the subject and have decided to try a few that were mentioned in the book.
I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.
I am going to be honest with you, I did not expect this to be a book I would love or dislike. I thought it would be a presentation of facts, something clinical or sterile. Something that was there for knowledge sake, not really for enjoyment. But wow, was I ever blown away when I started reading through this book. I ended up Loving it. I learned so much from Teri Secrest and her expertise in this area.
The first thing I noticed, was Teri Secrest’s love for her family. It is readily apparent throughout the whole book. She shares many examples of times that her family has used essential oils in their intended purpose with great success, even in the face of great odds. Personally, it was cool to read about the different healing properties that essential oils provide. It encouraged me to try new things, and research more about essential oils to know if the ones I am currently using are actually “pure” or if they are artificial scents.
Second, Teri Secrest has taken the time to research everything about essential oils, from the process of making the oils, preserving the oils, and the Biblical implications of the different oils. She has pursued the knowledge of essential oils for most of her life, she has sought that knowledge from others who have made it their lives work to keep essential oils alive for generations to come. Teri has also extensively traveled to places where essential oils are grown and preserved. Her love of that essential oils readily shows in her portrayal of the importance of essentials in our daily lives; based on the biblical use of essential oils.
Third, I loved how this book read as more of a story. Teri Secrest walked me through the Bible (highlights, stories, and Biblical references) of different times where essential oils were used and the purposes in using them. I think my favorite was the story of King Solomon. However, there are over 500 different references to essential oils in the Bible! I had no idea that essential oils were so extensively mentioned in the Bible. Interwoven throughout these Biblical stories is Teri Secrest’s personal journey with learning to use different essential oils.
Overall, I was wonderfully surprised by this well laid out storyline that read like a novel (almost), with colorful pictures, descriptions, and the recipes for different essential oil uses. I truly think that this was a great book to grow my understanding of essential oils and how they relate to the Bible and our overall health. I am looking forward to trying some of the ideas that Teri Secrest mentioned.
I give this book 5 out of 5 stars for the creative storytelling Teri Secrest used to weave in multiple facts, Biblical wisdom, and personal stories to create an informative and enjoyable book. As well as the assembly of Biblical facts explained in an easy to understand way and the vivid descriptions of the different oils used in the Bible. I truly cannot recommend a book more.
*As a side note I usually include a disclaimer saying I was given this book in exchange for my honest review, which I was. However, I have also purchased a copy for myself and two additional copies as Christmas gifts, as I believe people will really enjoy and learn from this book.
The first thing I noticed is the lovely cover. Isn’t it inviting? Even the sub-title drew me in and made me want to learn more.
Essential Oils, God’s Extravagant Provision for Your Health by author Terri Secrest is a book that I truly enjoyed. It has a plethora of information and the beautiful colored pictures gave me added enjoyment. I loved this bible based book.
The author has a nice style of writing. Her book is easy to understand has simple recipes for all types of conditions. She offers a wide range of solutions for illnesses that include food recipes with the essential oils to breathing the aroma of some oils to support mental health. There is so much information packed in this book it needs to be kept in one’s home library for future reference. I have used essential oils for years and learned much from this stunning book.
I recommend this book to anyone wanting learn more about essential oil, especially God’s divine plan for them for us. This would make a perfect gift for Christmas or birthday. It gets a 5 out of 5 star rating from me. A copy was provided by Celebrate Lit but these are my honest thoughts.
My Thoughts on Essential Oils:
I love that this book is from the perspective of a believer and using Essential Oils for healing.
I am a firm believer in using essential oils to help heal our bodies and that they are given to us from God just like the herbs are. In our house, we also use modern medicine when needed though as God gave us that as well.
This book is so chock full of knowledge. It has gorgeous color images and is one of those books you’re going to come back to over and over again. I highly recommend you get a print copy of this one.
Choose a high-quality oil brand, grab the essential oils mentioned as your starter set and get ready to be amazed! Already use oils? Then this is a great resource for what to use when you’re not sure or new and different ways to use your oils.
I have voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from Celebrate Lit. All views expressed are only my honest opinion. I was not required to write a positive review nor was I compensated in any other way. All opinions expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the FTC regulations.
In the interest of full disclosure, I admittedly went into Teri Secrest’s “Essential Oils” with some caution. While I am fully supportive of alternative therapies and have experimented a little with essential oils, as someone with chronic illnesses, I take all treatment approaches with a grain of salt. The cure-alls are a dime a dozen and most of them are incompatible with my body to begin with. What works for most people, even most of those who are chronically ill, never works for me, and I have become jaded. Yes, that therapy or lifestyle change is great and helps many people, but I am in the rare subset that can’t do x,y,z because my body does not function normally at any level. So I tend to have very low expectations of gleaning helpful therapeutic options, which is why I was pleasantly surprised by this book.
While reading “Essential Oils”, I learned interesting facts that were tied in with Scripture and also gained insight into some potential remedies in the form of alleviating agents for myself and others. Secrest has done an impressive job of compiling a lot of information in a stimulating way, and I read this book in a few hours. Her personal testimonies and stories were affirming and apropos. The way in which she includes Scripture is engaging and insightful; instead of just dropping in verses that speak to her points, she explains how they demonstrate God’s abundant care for us from the Garden of Eden to today. The chapters on Queen Esther and King Solomon gave me a fresh perspective on these Biblical accounts, drawing attention to and adding depth to details that I had not really considered before.
Because this book is well-designed, each element and section blends together well to form a cohesive and comprehensive whole. This is a fantastic read for anyone interested in looking into essential oils for the first time or for those who want to explore specific health benefits and oil recommendations. Secrest devotes a chapter to the twelve human body systems and how essential oils can benefit each, and she explains how to add supplemental-grade essential oils to cooking. There is also a chapter on enhancing romance for those who are married; being single, I skipped that section. Full-color photos throughout make this a fun and engaging book, although in e-formats this makes the file size very large. At the end is a brief glossary, followed by a reference guide that lists essential oils and what they can be used for and a helpful chart of health concerns and the essential oils that may be used to address them, rounding out this informative and inspiring work.
I received a complimentary copy of this book through CelebrateLit and was not required to post a favorable review. All opinions are my own.
I enjoyed reading this beautifully written book about Essential Oils from cover to cover. I enjoyed reading Teri’s personal experiences with learning about essential oils and how it personally helped her family. She also shared her journey about researching and even traveling to other countries to find out the history about plants and essential oils, especially ones mentioned in the bible.
It was so interesting to read about her personal experiences and research and I could tell she put alot of thought into this book. No particular brand of essential oils is mentioned in this book and all the recipes and essential oils mentioned are all singles, not blends, so this essential oils reference book could be used regardless of what brand of essential oils you use.
I found the “Supporting each system of your body” chapter especially helpful. Our body has 12 body systems: Integumentary System, Immune System, Cardiovascular or Circulatory System, Digestive System, Endocrine System, Skeletal System, Lymphatic System, Muscular System, Nervous System, Respiratory System, Urinary System, Reproductive System (including female and male).
The author lists several essential oils under each body system that would help and how it helps. For example, under Immune System “Oregano” oil is listed and why and how to use it. There are several oils mentioned under all 12 body systems which gives readers a huge variety of essential oils to try and buy.
This book contained beautiful pictures, reference guide, and recipes. I really enjoyed reading it and highly recommend it to anyone wanting to know more about essential oils!
I received a copy of this book complimentary for blog and social media review. All opinions are my own.
