3.5
Ruby is a university student, with magic abilities and an interest in journalism. The focus of her writing is the drug MagX, a drug that killed her father, and one she wishes was off the streets. She is strongly opposed to anyone taking it, though it’s a commonly used drug at the university.
When an intoxicated student goes missing, and others soon follow, Ruby and her new friends set out to investigate. Ruby is supposed to keep her magical abilities quiet, to avoid the attention of Harvesters, but her secret isn’t quite the one she thinks it is.
I did like this story, but I would have liked more in terms of the magic elements, and just more information about the characters, in general. I also found it a little awkward with how pushy Ruby was, with people she barely knew, when trying to discourage them from taking MagX.
I will be reading the next books in this series, though, as I’d like to learn more about Ruby and her family and friends, and see how her magical abilities develop further.
Wow what an awesome book. Ruby is like my spirit animal, and she’s such an interesting and exciting character to read. The plot grips you from page one and takes you on a journey you dont expect, I loved it’s unpredictability. It’s a beautifully written urban fantasy that I just loved. The fae concept was a fantastic addition to the story and I loved how it was different from other fae books I’ve read. And with that ending… I need book 2!! One word…. Wow!
I recieved a free copy of this and here’s my honest review.
Ruby is of fae descent and as such has inherited some of their magic. After convincing her overly protective mother to allow her to attend university in London the action starts to happen pretty much straight away.
Ruby and her friends are trying to find missing friends while keeping themselves out of the firing line of the harvesters, something that proves to be a little harder than they thought.
I’m loving this storyline and am very much looking forward to seeing how Ruby finds out more about her new magic and where the storyline takes her next. Praise for L.J. Rivers, this book is awesome!

Most books about magical people typically follow the same plot or share the same details – this one doesn’t. This is the most unique book based around magic that I’ve read; I had a hard time putting it down at night.
The characters were likable and relatable. Ruby is your typical teenager, so she’s easy to relate to (other than the stress of being a Fae, of course). She and her friends reminded me a lot of my own friend group.
L.J. Rivers did a great job at world-building; I could picture everything she described clearly. She included plenty of detailing, without being overly-descriptive.
Although it was a bit of a fast-paced story, I didn’t have any problems with keeping up with things. The last half of the book had me on edge the whole time with all of the twists and surprise details. I will definitely be looking into this series later!
I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.
I just finished reading LJ Rivers’ first book in the Ruby Morgan series—Essence of Magic, and what a thrilling read it is. From the first page and to the very end, LJ Rivers writing grabs and takes you on an exciting adventure mixing modern days with the magic of the sagas.
This series promises excitement, wonders, and thrilling experiences for both the reader and the characters in it.
