She promised she would bring the baronet to his knees, never dreaming she would lose her heart in the process.
Millicent Wedgwood will never obtain her rightful place in Society, which means she will never have an advantageous reputation, marriage, or future. All because Millie’s sister eloped years before. But there is a chance to rise above that disgrace. If she can win the trust of the … that disgrace. If she can win the trust of the baronet who insulted Lady Olivia, and then betray him, she will earn back her position in Society with Lady Olivia’s sponsorship.
Sir Isaac Fox returned from war with one less arm and a weight upon his soul. Where once he easily charmed Society, he now prefers to remain quietly alone at home. With a small estate to manage, Isaac is determined to be more responsible for those in his care and less foolhardy, which leaves no time for romance. Certainly no time for the infuriatingly enchanting Miss Wedgwood.
When Millie realizes her game has put her own heart in jeopardy, she risks losing everything she has so desperately sought to replace in her life. And though Isaac refuses Millie’s advances, he cannot deny her charm. But falling for Miss Wedgwood would mean reentering society and losing the peace he has found since the war. Can they find a way to heal their hearts together? Or will Millie’s deception ruin them both?

I am in love with this series. Engaging Sir Isaac is book 4 and it is wonderful! Sir Isaac was introduced in previous books, but he was always very aloof. Now we get to dig deep into his personality. Millie is caught between a rock and a hard spot. She wants to do the right thing and honor her mother and father‘s wishes, but her conscience is struggling with the cruel assignment she is given. I enjoyed the characters of Sir Isaac and Millie very much. They both had strong moral convictions and wanted to save the other one from pain. The compassion they felt for each other, made them more endearing. A lovely clean romance. Could be read as a stand alone, but definitely better to read as a series. One more to go, Lord Neils story. The man you love to hate. I can’t wait to see what is in store! Thank you Sally Britton for writing and entertaining me and all you fans!
WHAT IT’S ABOUT
She swore she would win the baronet’s heart in order to break it, never dreaming she would lose her own in the process.
MY TAKE
I was a little nervous about this one, simply because of the premise of the story. I don’t have much patience with vengeance seekers, and it worried me that Millie was allowing herself to be caught in the control of a horrible woman.
Sir Isaac lost an arm in the war, and still suffers from PTSD nightmares. He’s a great guy and has wonderful friends. The act he puts on for them and the outside world doesn’t show his doubts and the fear that no woman could love him since he’s only part of the man that he was before his injury.
Suspicious of Millie at first, especially when he knows who her hostess is, he’s slow to warm to Millie. But his sister likes her right away, and the two women become friends. Then he and Millie do too, and he wants to protect her. And the fall in love along the way.
The scene with the hammock was hilarious.
The lovely romance with a lot more of Lord Neil in it. Now I totally want to go back and read his story again.
The narrator Marian Hussey was wonderful again with the narration.
***spoiler alert***
Fortunately, Britton got Isaac involved in Millie’s dilemma just before I was ready to stop reading.
enjoyed wondering what would happen next – good read!
Liked the characters and story.
I was not prepared for the game that would be played in this story! I don’t normally enjoy head games between characters, but this one worked for me- because I could see the conflict in Millie as she is a puppet in the hands of her parents and Lady Olivia. I was rooting for her to make her own choices and yet I could see how she felt like she had no choice, especially when social blackmail is involved. She has a wonderful growth arc in the book as she is befriended by Isaac’s group of close-knit friends in spite of his mistrust and learns to be stronger than she knows.
Isaac is going through his own struggles as his wartime experiences have left him a very different man- brooding, grumpy, and tormented. I loved how his sister and friends that in turn starred in the previous books in the series don’t just make meaningless appearances, but are an integral part of the story and continue to be the primary supportive relationships in his life. The chemistry between he and Millie ebbed and flowed as they both had hidden or private sides that they had difficulty sharing, but eventually grew to know the genuine person behind the facade.
The tension grows steadily and it really felt like a nail-biter as Lady Olivia gets more ruthless and Millie is torn as she becomes more loyal to her new friends. It was fun to have Olivia’s brother Lord Neil befriend Millie in a platonic way and help her surreptitiously, since he played the part of the villain in the first book. It set me up to be thrilled when I learned that he will have his own book!
(I received a complimentary copy of the book; all opinions in this review are my own)
I expect a lot from Sally Britton’s books, and the author continues to deliver with well-developed characters, a plot with some twists that’s set at a good pace, dialogue that flows naturally, attention to those little details of Regency life, and a great HEA. I found it easy to connect with this story. Sir Isaac Fox and Millicent Wedgewood are both very likable characters with problems. I wanted a romance for the two of them. Lady Olivia makes a great villain! This story wraps up nicely with a sweet epilogue. I am looking forward to reading Reforming Lord Neil. I highly recommend Engaging Sir Isaac to clean/wholesome romance readers, to readers of Christian romance, and to those who love all things Regency. I obtained my copy through KU.
I absolutely loved this book! I loved all the characters and Isaac is one of my new favorite heroes. I really enjoyed how Britton handled the ‘enemies to friends’ trope- the progression was perfect and was very believable. I love when an author makes me feel what the character’s are feeling and Britton did that very well in this book! I was laughing and also crying at some parts. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and can’t wait to read Lord Neil’s book in October! I highly recommend this book! (This is part of a series and can be read as a standalone, but reading the other books first is always best to gain a deeper understanding of all the characters).
Engaging Sir Isaac is a superb Regency Romance novel. Author, Sally Britton, captures your heart and attention on page one. She doesn’t turn you loose until the final word is written.
Engaging Sir Isaac is book 4 in the Inglewood series. It can certainly be read as a stand-alone novel, but for greater enjoyment, I recommend reading the entire series in order.
The settings are well-described and the pacing is excellent. You can tell the author has researched her selected era well. The story easily transports you to early 19th century England.
Millie is a heroine with a strong backbone and moral compass. To please her family, she attempts an alliance with the thoroughly spoiled and wicked Lady Olivia.
Sir Isaac is the stoic hero battling inner and outer demons from the war with Napoleon. His world is turned upside down when he meets up with lovely Miss Wedgewood.
He can’t fight his savior complex and she plans to double cross him. What happens when the sparks fly?
Please read this delightful story to find out how their story ends.
Every time I read a new book in this series I want to start from the beginning and read them all again. I wish I had the time to do that right now. I just love this series. I am so glad we finally got to read Sir Isaac’s story. He was just as wonderful as I always imagined he would be. Millie is definitely in a hard spot, but she is a wonderful person underneath it all. This was a great story and it was so good to be back at Inglewood.
I was surprised that this book fully captured the devious machinations of Regency society.
Millicent “Millie” was ruined even before her debut. Her older sister ran off and her intended ruined their family. Though wealthy, Millie hasn’t been successful at society. But desperate times calls for drastic measures. So, she agrees to get the dirt on the four men who done Four society ladies wrong, so they in turn would accept her into society. She agrees and one if the men who did wrong to Lady Olivia (who holds the cards) is Sir Isaac.
In a refreshing turn, he meets Millie in disguise, is missing an arm and he and Millie have great chemistry right away. I liked him. He didn’t play by the rules.
Highly recommend for this interesting take.
Inglewood has been such a great series, and I have been really looking forward to Isaac’s story. Isaac is a fan favorite with so many people. I felt that Isaac’s story had a lot to live up to and it has definitely succeeded!
The first appearance of Isaac in this book reminds us of why we love him so much. I loved seeing Isaac open up and he has the best sense of humor. I wasn’t sure who I really pictured him with but Millie turns out to be perfect for him.
.“And the way Isaac stared at her, a depth in his eyes that nearly invited her in, offering to make her a part of something different—”
Millie and Isaac’s meet-cute is so funny. I love a good meet-cute.
.“From the first moment I saw you, pretending you were a groundskeeper, I have thought you handsome, witty, and most infuriating.”
Sally Britton has such a great flow to her writing and the books are always hard to put down. She also writes characters that really stay with you long after you finish reading.
Lord Neil is one of those characters you don’t like at the beginning but than want to know more about. I was glad to hear that he will get his own story.
This book can be read as a standalone but I would recommend reading the entire series to really get to know the back story.
I love everything Sally Britton writes and this was no exception. I loved how Millie and Sir Isaac interact-dislike turning into friendship and then more. It’s such a fun story.
I listened to the audiobook and truly loved the narration-her accent just added to the wonderful writing talent. Excellent!!!
These wonderful; characters led me a merry, heart warming chase. Sir Isaac should be a tragic figure but he is too strong to let his troubles get him down, especially after meeting Millie. A great read. Now to move on the the next book in the series.
This book made me glad to live now rather than in the nineteenth century. Can you imagine a time when an entire family could be ruined because one daughter eloped with a lawyer rather than be married to a cruel duke? And then imagine a mother forcing a second daughter into compromising herself morally in order to ingratiate herself to a mean-spirited, proud, manipulative woman who might be willing to sponsor them in society and help them regain status. The saving grace in this book is Sir Isaac, his sister Esther, and the others in their set who draw Millie in and show her a noble life outside the power hungry ton members.
Milly tired to live her live covering for her sister’s past. Her mother wants to reenter society but is shunned and expects this daughter to open doors for the family. Through blackmail and scheming Milly was invited to a country estate with instructions to seduce three different men and get them into a position where they could be blackmailed…..She did not know she would fall for one of the men.
So hard to find romance novels that are clean and well written. Loved this. Bought the whole series.
A lovely wee Romance. I’ll read more of her gladly.
I really enjoyed the book anc the charcters. It was very emtertaining.
Pain, hatred, love, mystery, drama, good and evil. Insight into someone else’s pain and life struggles who was injured in war.
I enjoyed the book.
