She promised she would bring the baronet to his knees, never dreaming she would lose her heart in the process.
Millicent Wedgwood will never obtain her rightful place in Society, which means she will never have an advantageous reputation, marriage, or future. All because Millie’s sister eloped years before. But there is a chance to rise above that disgrace. If she can win the trust of the … that disgrace. If she can win the trust of the baronet who insulted Lady Olivia, and then betray him, she will earn back her position in Society with Lady Olivia’s sponsorship.
Sir Isaac Fox returned from war with one less arm and a weight upon his soul. Where once he easily charmed Society, he now prefers to remain quietly alone at home. With a small estate to manage, Isaac is determined to be more responsible for those in his care and less foolhardy, which leaves no time for romance. Certainly no time for the infuriatingly enchanting Miss Wedgwood.
When Millie realizes her game has put her own heart in jeopardy, she risks losing everything she has so desperately sought to replace in her life. And though Isaac refuses Millie’s advances, he cannot deny her charm. But falling for Miss Wedgwood would mean reentering society and losing the peace he has found since the war. Can they find a way to heal their hearts together? Or will Millie’s deception ruin them both?

This is the fourth book in Sally Britton’s Inglewood series and I love these characters! I loved the banter between Millicent and Sir Isaac. I loved how Millie had to decide what was most important to her; doing what her mother wanted her to do or following her heart. I also loved how Isaac had to learn to open up to his friends and that they would love him even after all he went through in the war. I loved how Millie and Sir Isaac didn’t fall in love right away but that it took time and developing trust for them to finally be together. I also liked that we saw a different side to Lord Neil and I look forward to reading his story in the next book.
I received a complimentary book from publishers, publicists, and or authors. A review was not required and all opinions and ideas expressed are my own.
“I have never met anyone like you, Millicent Wedgewood. Prospective villainess.”
First off, Millicent’s name is awful and puts me in mind of Maleficent, a true fiction villainess. I wanted that name to match her character. Then Sally has to go and give me Millie for a nickname. Instantly, she becomes a character to root for. Millie feels extreme familial and societal pressure to do anything she can to lift her family out of disgrace. She is given three tasks to complete in order for one of the ton’s darlings to “befriend” her and give Millie’s family the opportunities they desire. She must shame three men, including Sir Isaac.
Sir Isaac, war hero, has returned from the continent and ignores his emotional and mental injuries but cannot ignore the physical reminder if his missing left arm. He avoids society but will do much to appease his sister, including socializing in small events in the neighborhood. His catalyst is his interest in an impertinent miss trespassing on his land, Miss Millicent Wedgewood.
I loved the second half of this book. Sally Britton must be clairvoyant because all of my questions and concerns from the first half were beyond satisfactorily addressed. There are two scenes in this book that I HAD to re-read. They are so lovely! (No spoilers, read it for yourself! )
Sally Britton is an expert at meet-cutes that make you both sigh and smile. I was a little reluctant to start this one, only because I’m not usually a fan of books with a “mean girls” sub-plot. However I have not been disappointed with a Sally Britton novel yet, and she did not let me down. Sally didn’t make Isaac completely oblivious or blindsided, he was a true hero. Though Millie struggled with her moral dilemma, Sally gave her both weaknesses and a back bone. The book was witty, redemptive and beautifully done.
I am in love with this series. Engaging Sir Isaac is book 4 and it is wonderful! Sir Isaac was introduced in previous books, but he was always very aloof. Now we get to dig deep into his personality. Millie is caught between a rock and a hard spot. She wants to do the right thing and honor her mother and father‘s wishes, but her conscience is struggling with the cruel assignment she is given. I enjoyed the characters of Sir Isaac and Millie very much. They both had strong moral convictions and wanted to save the other one from pain. The compassion they felt for each other, made them more endearing. A lovely clean romance. Could be read as a stand alone, but definitely better to read as a series. One more to go, Lord Neils story. The man you love to hate. I can’t wait to see what is in store! Thank you Sally Britton for writing and entertaining me and all you fans!
I loved this fourth book in Sally Britton’s Inglewood Series! Engaging Sir Isaac was a delight to read. The story was quite different from the others, which was perfect as each character is so individual, but with wonderful glimpses of already loved characters. Isaac and Millie were very dynamic characters. Their sweet and clean love story had such a wonderful ending. I highly recommend it!
I received a complimentary copy of the book. All opinions are my own and are expressed voluntarily.
First I must say that I never thought I could like Lord Neil but I loved seeing his redeeming qualities in this book. He is still just a bit unlikable and seems on the evil side but then he goes out of his way to help people where it seemingly doesn’t benefit him. Not that he is going to go too much out of his way to help someone but he seemed to be where he needed to be, dropping the right hint exactly when it needed to be dropped. It makes me look forward to the next book.
But now on to Isaac and Millie… I found Millie a little frustrating in her willingness to go along with Olivia’s scheme but I did like her and Isaac too. I rooted for them to win but couldn’t see how it was going to come about. It was not a predictable story except to say that we knew it would end happily. How they would get there I knew not.
I felt like the pacing of the story was on the slower side but that may have been in part because of my life and the interruptions in reading I had. So much going on that it took me much longer to read than it normally would have.
I have enjoyed all the books in this series and look forward to the next one.
No sex, language or violence
*I received an ARC of this book and voluntarily chose to review it.
Miss Millicent Wedgwood’s sister eloped and took with her any easy road to a match made for love for poor Millie, whose parents now tightly controlled her contacts and future prospects. Sir Isaac Fox, recently returned from the continental wars, finds himself in the crosshairs of a mean-spirited and spoiled Lady Olivia, whose cruel plans to embarrass him involve using Millie to find the means to do so.
I enjoyed this sweet Regency romance, with likable heroine and hero contrasting nicely with the wicked Lady Olivia. An engaging story, with an HEA and a few surprises along the way
I liked how both the h & H showed growth individually and together. I thought the romance felt real and sweet. I woudn’t say sweet as in cutesy or gives you a tootache. I mean sweet as in if you’re friend is telling how you about their fiancee and how they came together, “awww”. This has been an interesting and original series. I think Sally Britton can write multi-dimensional characters with depth. Previous characters showed in supporting roles but did not take away from the story. I really enjoy in a series when this happens. I get to have a mini epilogue of the future of characters. The story had a nice flow, development and arc. I knew there’d be a hea but was guessing how’d it all turn about. There were seeds sown for the next book in the series and I cannot wait.
Another fantastic book in the Inglewood series! I have been waiting for Isaac’s story ever since he was introduced in the first book and it was worth waiting for! Sally makes her characters so human and relatable that you feel like you know them and you can’t help but feel engaged in their happiness and in their story. Isaac and Millie start out at odds with each other and there are so many obstacles in the way of them finding a happily ever after, but their journey of discovering each other and what is important in life is charming and delightful. This is a must read for any fan of regency romance!
This one is my favorite of the series so far. I have enjoyed all of them. Thanks for gifting us with wonderful stories.
Love this whole series. So happy to finally have Isaac’s story! Sally Britton is such a great author and I love all her books. I enjoyed Millie and Isaac’s story and also getting to know Lord Neil a little better so I can look forward to his story next. Clean Regency Romance I would recommend
loved the story! interesting complex characters. A journey of change for two special people. I enjoyed the read and you will too! a must read!
I really enjoyed spending time with these two people. They both had fears, and insecurities, and both have a hard time believing the other can see past their weaknesses – but as a reader, I could see how it was both their strengths AND weaknesses that made them a good match. This is so honest and true in real life, which is my favorite thing to see in a novel. The only person who can change you is you – but others can inspire you to make that choice. I enjoyed experiencing that journey with both characters, and appreciated the honesty shown throughout. This author does r go for tropes, so don’t think you know where this story will go.
Clean, with enough kissing to make it fun.
Engaging Sir Isaac finally gives us the story of the man we have only seen glimpses of in the other Inglewood books. Isaac has returned from war with one less arm and a lot of emotional scars. Miss Millicent (Millie) Wedgwood has made a pact with the evil Lady Olivia to bring Sir Isaac down in exchange for help to revitalize her family’s status with society. While the two meet on rocky terms, Millie quickly realizes she cannot hurt Isaac and Isaac will stop at nothing to protect Millie.
I enjoyed the romance between the two as they fell in love with each other but weren’t always sure of things between them. This book definitely made me think twice in regards to Lord Neil and I am glad to know we will get his story since this book really makes you wonder what that tale will be. Millie’s maid Sarah was also a fantastic side character.
Overall, this is probably more 4.5 stars. I definitely recommend it and the rest of the series.
I have thoroughly loved all 4 books in the series. Sally is the kind of author whose stories are a magic carpet. They pick you up and take you to another time and place.
I will not give you a synopsis of the story because you can read about it. I will say take a moment and leave your stress and day to day life behind and take a magic carpet ride to Inglewood!
Miss Wedgwood and her parents are desperate to regain their reputation in society. Therefore, they agree to abide by the wishes of Lady Olivia with her promise to sponsor them. The only catch is that Lady Olivia wants revenge on a neighbor at whatever cost.
Sir Isaac is still traumatized by the war and prefers his privacy over moving about in society like he used to do. However, when he encounters Miss Wedgwood and starts to know her, he starts to feel better and enjoys his time with her. However, once he’s made aware of the agreement, he’s determined to find a way to help her. The only problem is if he can do it without risking his heart in the process.
This is a really great book. It depicts the depth people will go to for revenge as well as how easily people can get trapped in manipulation. It also doesn’t shy away from the horrors that soldiers can experience. There’s a lot going on and although it’s a standalone, it helps to have already read the previous books in the series. I appreciated how Isaac was so human in the story – he had issues from the war, and tried to ignore them, but eventually reached out for help. I also appreciate how Millie tried to do the right thing, yet found herself trapped through manipulation and fear. She wasn’t perfect either. The supporting characters are about as good as they get. It wouldn’t be half the story without them. Finally, I found the ending satisfying and I liked how it wasn’t predictable.
Romance – PG / kissing
Language – PG / clean
Violence – one female character is threatened, and there’s a flashback scene to an attack. There’s also references to the war.
My rating – 5 stars.
A beautiful story of Isaac, a baron injured in the Napoleonic war and Millie damaged by her parents forcing her to align herself with a less than noble but powerful family. Her family only cares about getting their social standing back. But the things expected of Millie does not sit well with her. When Isaac is one of the intended victims and she finds out he is a respectable gentlemen things become complicated. She must decide between her parents and her love for Isaac as her sister did with her husband. But she must work up the courage to do the right thing. Even if it breaks her heart. I received a complimentary copy and I am voluntarily reviewing.
I find it very interesting to look back at the social rules of this time period. Those very rules have put Lady Millicent (Millie) on a lower acceptability plane through no fault of her own, her sister dared to fall in love and marrying someone other than her fiancé. After failing to seduce Millie her fiancé proceeded to ruin the family’s reputation. This story is about the extent Millie’s mother is willing to push her daughter to restore the family’s place in society. It pits Millie against her mother’s ambition and her own conscience. It is fun to watch her, Sir Isaac and Lord Neil circle around each other and Lady Olivia. I enjoyed this book.
I so enjoyed this book. Sally outdid herself with this one. What is it about a broken man that appeals to a woman’s heart strings. I am glad I only fall in love with ones in books. Isaac was a good leading man. He was gruff with a reason and such wonderful apologies. I loved reading these two falling in love. I love how Britton doesn’t fall into the old formula, she creates her own endings and outcomes. I loved how the problems in this story were handled. I love that everyone grew and learned and became better people. Just loved this one a lot. I was so hoping this one would hit the spot and it did! Now to wait for Neil’s story!
This novel has a wonderful premise. The issues the protagonists are working through are convincingly portrayed. They seem very observant about the people around them, even if they do not fully comprehend what is going on internally. The latter part of the novel picks up pace and delivers a very satisfying conclusion. Part of a series, although the story stands alone, but best if you read Rescuing Lord Inglewood first.
