“Angry people are not always wise.” – Jane AustenAfter a standoff in the pizza parlor, Elsie Bennet has decided Fitzwilliam “I-Throw-Fitz” Darcy is the worst customer she’s ever encountered. Also the best looking, but that’s beside the point. She’s horrified to discover Will is not just passing through her small town, he’s her new neighbor. Will Darcy has all the money and time he could ask for, … he could ask for, and yet life never seems to meet his expectations. When his best friend, Charlie, starts dating Jane Bennet, Will becomes their unhappy third-wheel. The solution? Bring along Jane’s sister, Elsie, a girl who challenges him, makes him laugh, plagues his thoughts, and unfortunately, hates his guts.
Will might control a lot of things, but he won’t control her. Elsie’s already been warned away by her new friend, Jeff Wickham, who found out the hard way that Will is not someone to be crossed. Things would be so much simpler if she was attracted to Jeff. But she’s not. She’s attracted to Will, and the tug-o-war between her mind and her heart is going to drive her mad.
A modern day take on Pride and Prejudice with all the characters you know and love.

A clean, contemporary Pride and Prejudice retelling?? Yes. Yes, PLEASEEEEE!! This book had so many feelings. So much tension. I. Could. Not. Stop. Myself. From swooning. Needless to say, Mr. Darcy didn’t disappoint.
While there are similarities to the original story (because this book is a retelling), I will say that I loved how the author switched up different aspects of it. And no, I’m not going to give any examples, you’ll just have to trust me and read the story for yourself.
All in all, I loved the story. I really did. I wish it had been a tadddd bit longer, but I got an epilogue…so I can’t complain too much, lol.
As far as content goes: C. L. E. A. N. Sure, Collin was (very) forward and made me cringe several different times, but it was definitely a clean read.
If you love Pride and Prejudice (or book boyfriends that have a hard time expressing themselves, but once they do, it’s BEAUTIFULLLLL) then I think you should give this sweet/snarky book a try!!!
Modern P&P retelling done well!
I love modern retellings of Jane Austen’s books. This was a really fun version of Pride and Prejudice!
A contemporary, but faithful take on a Jane Austen classic. I enjoyed the story immensely, and I plan to read more by this author.
I loved this reinvention of a Jane Austen classic! Though I “knew” what sort of twists the story was going to take, the story wasn’t a boring retelling of a favorite story of mine. I loved the characters and dialogue–there were plenty of hilarious, awkward, and swoony moments to keep me reading. Would recommend!
Fun, modern retelling of Jane Austen’s classic. Even though fans of the original know the basic plot-line, Rachel John’s version has some interesting twists. This book is a perfect light read.
Wow! This was a fun and amazing read.
Elise has a crazy family. She has a T-shirt business with her sister Jane. But because she is always cleaning up after her sister Lydia, she works in a crappy pizza joint. This is how her Jane Austin story begins….a disgruntled customer.
Will is stuck in the crappy town buying crappy pizza. But he never lets Charlie be alone. His best friend and him are always together. But he is aggravated and mad. Waiting on his pizza, he is intrigued by the cute girl behind the counter.
This story turns into the most heartfelt and loving read. A true Darcy romance. The characters are brilliant and sweet. The book is well written and worthy of a Jane Austin stamp. I really can’t wait to read more.
Story: 5 stars
I loved this story and felt that Rachel John faithfully kept the bones of the story and made it believable to a modern audience.
Almost all of the characters were spot-on-true to their Austen-selves, except Elsie. Her teasing humor simply was not there. I’ve read tons of P&P variations and re-tellings and I can count on one hand the authors who have succeeded in writing Elizabeth’s humor, so I didn’t take away any stars.
This was such a clever retelling. Ms. Johns came up with great scenarios that explained Darcy’s hatred of Wickham as well as careers for Mr. & Mrs. Bennet, Lydia, even Mr. Collins and Mrs.DeBourgh! Some serious thought went into crafting modern versions of characters and modern situations that reflect the original.
Narrator: 4 stars
Ms. Emmes did a good job. Her voices for Lydia, Caroline and Mrs. Bennet were particularly apropos. She read at a good pace and her expression was very good. Her male voices weren’t my favorite but I tend to favor deeper voices in narrators and I feel badly for critiquing something she has no control over. Her acting was totally respectable.
*poor, **ok, ***good, ****very good, *****something special
This book was incredible and so underrated! I very much enjoyed the story line and the closeness to the original Austen work while being different enough to keep my engaged. I wish there was more from this author.
After reading a politically charged historical biography and listening to all the corona virus news I was ready for a light-hearted, clean, romantic comedy. Add some Austen inspired characters and Engaging Mr. Darcy hit the right notes of funny and romantic. Will Darcy is handsome, but surly and arrogant. Elsie Bennet is hardworking but judgmental. After a rude encounter at a pizza parlor, both Will and Elsie begin the journey of realizing that what you see of a person in a moment may not be their full character. Add a full complement of Austen characters: Charlie and Caroline Bingley, Jane, Mary, Kat and Lydia Bennet, as well as Jeff Wickham, and you have the recipe for mayhem and comedy. One thing I enjoy about Rachel John books is the books are generally clean reads, (no sex, violence, or profanity), and have the right notes for a happily ever after.
I’ve been on a Austen modernization kick and this one was so cute! I loved Will and Elsie! I really liked how this Will showed his feelings a little better than Mr Darcy. This modernization is one of my favorites because of a lot of the new takes on the old classic. Caroline was annoying as always, but she was actually tolerable in this story and making that happen is a job well done!
This was a fun retelling of Pride and Prejudice. The modern spin with the crazy family. The mom really drove me nuts. It was well written and had some good stuff. The kisses were a fun addition:} I just really wish they had had more talking between them. You understood why they disliked each other but falling into like takes more then just deep looks and kisses. This is a chaste version with no religious undertones.
This was a fun story to read. Elsie thinking about Mr. Darcy after their first meeting: It was like God realized he’d given the guy too much natural good looks and decided to skimp on the personality. One of the slogans from her tee shirts: Bookmarks are for quitters. Don’t you love those? It was interesting to see how Rachel John used the Pride and Prejudice characters in a modern-day setting. Engaging Mr. Darcy is a well-written romance that I enjoyed. I liked the main characters and got the HEA that I wanted.
