After years of preparation, the world’s most experienced Antarctic explorer embarked on the most dramatic adventure of his life. Sir Ernest Shackleton had carefully picked crew and a stout, well-outfitted ship, the Endurance.
But he had no radio, the world was at war, and at the edge of the Antarctic continent, the ship froze in the sea ice. After months of immobility, it was crushed. Then … Then began an impossible journey. With three tiny boats, the crew worked their way across frozen the Antarctic Sea.
This vivid book recounts the story of Shackleton’s heroic voyage from South Georgia Island to Antarctica then back to South Georgia. It is a tribute to Shackleton and his crew’s ability to fight for survival and one of the most harrowing adventures in history.

We saw this story made into an iMax movie years ago. The movie could not do justice to this story though! The sub title is “Shackleton’s Extraordinary Voyage” and extraordinary doesn’t do it justice. This true story of a man’s leadership and inspiration, an undying commitment to survive and prevail under the most overwhelmingly difficult …
I read this book back in the 1960s. Yes it was written years ago. A really great book that I remember even now. Inspirational as well as informative.
Not as indepth as I expected.
Such and amazing true adventure! My husband doesn’t read, but he finished this book in just a few days and then bought copies for all his friends. It is almost unbelievable, but in this case truth is stranger than fiction! If you can stand the cold, read this book!
Shackletons tale was a reading selection for a course examining man vs nature. This was a new tale of ecplorationfor me and served to underscore my belief that man really can beat Mother Nature.
How anyone survived this expedition is hard to believe. The hardships that these men endured would kill men that were well fed and in great physical condition, but these men were starving and dressed in rags. A story of men that had great faith in an inspirational leader.
Outstanding people with honor, character, and bravery . Well written and very exciting.
History! Amazing history.
Inspiring retelling of Shackelton’s amazing survival in the Antarctic.
One of the best books I have read.
The inspiring true story of Shackleton’s 22 month adventure to Antarctica and back, showing man’s incredible bravery and will to live. I love adventure stores and thrillers, but the fact that it really happened made it compelling. The Endurance Expedition in 1914 was to cross Antarctica via the South Pole. His ship, Endurance, was frozen into an …
excellent account of an extraordinary journey.
Wow! Heroic adventure tale
Very interesting!
One of the most tragic events in exploratory history. Well done.
One of the best ever read
Dramatic portrayal of one man’s courage in the face of overwhelming adversity. Once started, almost impossible to put down until you arrive at the conclusion.
Sub-par writing
History, I think it is safe to say, favors the winners. It remembers and rewards those who try and succeed, not those who try and fail — or at least not those who fail to do anything but simply survive.
There are exceptions, of course. The British at Dunkirk come to mind. So do Washington’s army in the Battle of Long Island and the crew of …
Endurance is my all-time favorite adventure story. It’s simply amazing how these men survived being stranded in the Antarctica for such a long period of time. I learned a lot, and I was enthralled throughout the entire book. I still love this book after multiple readings!
