The new Rownt contracts have helped Command retake the rebel planets. And now refugees are fleeing toward the edges of space. Ex-Command officer Tyce Robinson has a price on his head. He and the crew of the Dragon have all broken laws, and they refuse to be condemned to an Earth prison. Tyce’s grand escape plan goes south when an alien ship attacks both his ship and the Command cruiser chasing … chasing them. With both ships disabled, Tyce throws a Hail Mary. What he doesn’t know is that his academy roommate is the officer charged with arresting him.
Sub-Commander John Burden has always put his world first. He once thought his academy roommate Tyce was the same. Command sends John out with orders to arrest his ex-best friend, leaving John caught between demanding an explanation from the friend he remembers or throwing the traitor in a prison cell. But when unfamiliar aliens attack, his feelings are unimportant in the face of immediate danger. He has to survive, protect his people, and warn Earth that the Anla and Rownt are not the only aliens interested in humanity.

This is a five books series top and tailed (geddit?!) by a free prequel and a collection of short stories. I was a bit nervy about dipping my toe into the universe to start with…the relationship between Ondry and Liam is a sub/dom one, which would usually put me off picking up a book because they are rarely, in my opinion, done well. However…it’s Lyn Gala, so big plus. And it turns out to be an unusual and satisfying take on the dynamic. I found myself sucked right into the universe, the love story between the human and alien MCs and the alien psychology. The world-building is brilliant. It’s a lovely, absorbing series and I really recommend having a look.
This is set in the same universe as the other books, but only peripherally touches on the same characters. The aliens though… yes. They’re brilliant. A must read!
Ends, Means, Laws, and an Angry Ship by author Lyn Gala is a sci-fi adventure set in the Claiming universe. I liked this book. There is a lot to take in. If you are looking for a romance with a lot of sex and the like this is not the book for you. This is more story-driven, and the emotional attachment these two men have.
There is a ton to unpack in this book. I had to read this in sections, so it did not overwhelm me. I liked this sci-fi though because I understood everything. It is not so overly complicated that I was lost. It has the perfect pace, lots of action, and emotional angst to keep me turning the pages.
Tyce is a very complicated character. He is an ex Command Officer who now Commands the terrorists. Even that is a super gray area in this book. No one is exactly who they seem.
Tyce is loyal, brave, and has an honorable soul that shines through all he does.
John has always thought the world black and white. Has had to live down Tyce’s betrayals. He has a moral code that is very much his own. I liked him he comes off as stiff and unforgiving at first, but you see that is to protect his heart from breaking as it had in the past.
Overall great story. Lots of characters I would like to know more about. I would want more from this world too. When you want a great space story with memorable characters, I highly suggest picking up this one.
Five Shooting Stars
I was happy to find out that Lyn Gala had written another book based in the same universe as The Claimings series, though this one is set just a wee bit after the last one. I started the book and couldn’t put it down. One of my favourite authors is Anne McCaffrey and I love The Brain & Brawn series, The ship who sang, in Lyn Gala’s, Ends, Means, Laws and an Angry Ship the ship is organic, living, self aware, reminding me of the books I loved to read. The main Characters are Tyce, the outlaw and the Captain of the Dragon and John the sub commander of the earth team, whose ships are attacked and end up on the organic ship, both crews battling each other and the unknown enemy another Alien different from the ones we have met before in The Claimings series, will they put their past squabbles aside and work together to survive, will they end up together, you’ll have to wait and see. I’m hoping Lyn Gala writes more, as I love these meeting the different alien species and how they work with humanoids, people from earth and the outlaying planets.
