Earth to earth, ashes to ashes, dust to dust; in the sure and certain hope of the Resurrection to eternal life.
Four caskets. Two bodies.
Jessica and Jude Day witness their funeral and that of their parents a few yards away from mourning family and friends. Stripped of the only life they’ve ever known, the Days say goodbye to San Francisco forever.
Six months later, two thirty-year-old misfits with elite self-defense skills and penchants for alcohol, sex, and trouble arrive like an earthquake to Peaceful Woods, a retirement community in Omaha, Nebraska, that thrives on rules and gossip. Welcome home, Jackson and Jillian Knight.
Jackson celebrates his new beginning by embracing his job and wiping his cavalier past clean with a temporary oath of celibacy. But Jillian’s past is branded into her soul—the deaths, the insanity, Dr. Luke Jones, and the need to make her lovers bleed. Her chance for redemption comes in the form of a next door neighbor, one Senior Master Sergeant Monaghan. He’s sexy, dangerously alluring, and riddled with emotional issues from years of service. He’s also … So. Damn. Grumpy.
Their mission is simple: Let go, start over, don’t kill anyone, and pray that nobody wakes the dead.

Truth 1 – I have no idea how I ended up with this book. Truth 2 – it sat on my Kindle shelf for months – partly because I was a little put out that it showed up, partly because it is part of a ‘you must read them all!’ trilogy, and partly because there are just sooo many books on my virtual Kindle shelf. Truth 3 – I started it and thought ‘What took me so long?!’. And Truth 4 – I read books 2 and 3 in one day. Take away – really great story that made me laugh, caught me from the very first, and kept until the very end!
Well edited.
We begin with twins Jessica and Jude Day watching their funeral. Their DEA agent father and mother have been murdered, their deaths have been faked, and a Witness Protection style life awaits. Jessica and Jude Day become Jillian and Jackson Knight. They leave the life, friends, family, loves, and home behind for a thrilling life in a retirement community in Omaha, Nebraska. Finding a new normal is anything but easy for Jackson and Jillian. They can’t continue with their former professions, so they pick new ones for each other. Jillian turns Jackson into a piano teacher, while Jackson chooses home party Personal Pleasure Device consultant for Jillian. They meet the neighbors, form friendships, and generally try to blend in. Then, they meet their next door neighbor AJ Monaghan. He is older than the twins, in the Air Force, and fairly regimented. He is not impressed with the twins.
Jessica had to leave the love of her life behind. Jillian is trying to move forward, and slowly builds a relationship with AJ. Jude was a love ’em and leave ’em kind of guy. Jackson has sworn off women temporarily, hoping to be different from Jude. But, the life they had and the life they have are difficult to keep separate. Jillian can’t completely abandon Jessica because then she’d have to forget Luke. And how can she do that when he has her heart? But Jillian is learning to live again with AJ. What does that mean for her feelings for Luke? Just when it seems like she is willing to fully embrace Jillian, AJ receives life altering news. Meanwhile, strange texts begin arriving. Does someone know where they are?
There are so many threads in this story – the backstory of Jessica/Jillian’s life slowly unfolds, revealing tragedy, horror, hope, and love. And while the relationship between AJ & Jillian is compelling, it is the love story of Luke and Jessica that really pulls the heart.
All the while the writing is just amazing. I found myself laughing so many times. Jessica/Jillian lives life to the fullest, despite the loss and horror of her past. She has a few odd hangups, but as her story unfolds, they make total sense. I devoured this one, and couldn’t wait to get more in Middle of Knight. Enjoy!
So many layers to the characters and story
It is safe to say I’ve never read a book with a character like Jillian! This book had me wanting more! One of the best books ever!
Oh My Wow…
Can one book put you on edge, Intrigue you, Make you laugh, Keep you guessing, Make you swoon and Give you a head trip?
YES!!! Yes it can.
Unputdownable. Entertaining. Puzzling.
I FELL IN LOVE WITH ALL THE CHARACTERS. This too me is crazy. I love them all!! Even the crazy ones
Reading is one of my favorite pastimes, but when you’re an avid reader who reads well over 100 novels per year, many books tend to blend together. Authors that bring something fresh to the table stand a better chance of producing work that stands out. Jewel E. Ann brought her A-game with End of Day, and I can honestly say I’ve never read anything like it. She has woven together a gripping, intriguing, and clever novel that I could not put down. What a fantastic start to the Jack & Jill series.
End of Day is a romantic-suspense / dramedy / mystery. It is also one huge mindf*ck! It deals with violent subject matter but I wouldn’t classify it as dark fiction; I’d say it falls more on the grey spectrum. It is not a paranormal romance.
Thirty year-old twins Jillian and Jackson Knight have just moved to a quiet Omaha retirement community under unknown circumstances. While Jackson embraces their fresh start, Jillian is resistant. The story is told in the third person and centers around Jillian. Always the rule breaker, Jillian relishes giving the male residents heart palpitations by getting her mail clad only in panties, a tank top, and red rain boots. She’s the type of complex protagonist I can really sink my teeth into: damaged, volatile, snarky, nurturing, alluring, and a total badass. Jillian strikes up a dangerous flirtation with AJ, her perpetually grouchy next-door neighbor, who also happens to be a veteran suffering from PTSD. Is he a threat or a second chance?
The story switches between the present and Jillian’s past, and it’s these flashbacks that I found to be absolutely captivating. We meet Luke, the great love of Jillian’s life, and we come to learn more about Jillian’s history, as well as the mysteries surrounding her disturbing psychological tendencies. It’s slowly but expertly paced and extremely gratifying.
My heart ached for Jillian and her desperate attempts to find redemption and happiness. Although there is no love triangle, I couldn’t help comparing AJ and Luke and wondering which man is better for her.
I’m going to crown Jewel E. Ann the “Mary Poppins of Contemporary Romance” because I’m pretty sure she subscribes to the philosophy that a spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down. I’ve discovered that she has a knack for mixing humor and heartbreak and guess what? I like it! She sucker punched me with her style in one of my favorites, Undeniably You, but now I’ve come to expect it. The snarky banter takes the edge off the suffering in this tragically beautiful story.
Many questions remain, and we still have no idea what brought the Knights to Nebraska, but I’m excited to find out. End of Day is the first book in the Jack & Jill trilogy. An optional cliffhanger is included, so if you’re not a fan of cliffies don’t read it unless you’re ready to jump into the next book.
I fell in love with this author’s writing whilst reading the Transcend duet; there’s no denying that she has a unique and fresh approach to her stories. So now I am on a mission to read her back titles starting with this series which came highly recommended.
It’s fair to say that the plot is an intricate one traversing between past and present which is great, but you have to be on the ball to know who knows what, why and when. I love books like this, ones that aren’t predictable and you have no idea what direction the plot is going to take. My heart is torn in two between Jessica and Jillian and the men in their lives.
Told from a third person POV; I find I can’t get as fully engrossed in to the book as much as I like as it slows my reading speed down. The story is slow paced, but I have a feeling it needs to be to develop a complex plot that is brewing. The author has developed characters with a brilliant dry sense of humour that had me laughing so much. This book can make you laugh whilst dealing with a serious moment and that’s what has hooked me from the start!
This first book in the series is amazing. It captivated me right from the start. Jessica/Jillian and Jude/Jackson are amazing siblings. I can feel all of the love they share and how much they support each other especially after the tragedy that changes their lives forever. I love the back story of falling in love with Luke and the new story with Sarge. I love all of the new neighbors. Great story. I can’t wait to read the next one.
Ahhhhh this is soooooo good! Seriously, I wasn’t sure if I was going to read it right away because I bought her book that just came out and I saw that you should read this series first. Not that you had to, but it was highly recommended because of the characters. So when I saw that this book was free, I thought meh, I’ll get it and put it on the back burner. Holy moly cow I’m so glad I read it, what a stroy, I couldn’t put it down! Sorry kids, momma is busy reading!!
Jillian cracks me up! I just love her and her red rain boots. Looking at the cover I thought the story was going to be all dark and twisty, it really wasn’t. Well, there is some twisty in there. But that just goes to show never judge a book by its cover! There’s witty and funny dialog, not only between Jillian and her brother, but also with her grumpy AJ.
Okay, I’m diving right into the next one because this one ended on a small cliffy. I’m going in!
I have to be honest. I had my doubts about this series when I started. I’m a huge fan of Ann’s writing and storytelling so I had my expectations since reviews of Jack & Jill were raving. I began reading and noticed it was written in third person which I’m not a fan of. I was actually questioning myself. So I quit or continue.
I knew and expected that there had to be a reason for Ann’s method of storytelling and believe me there was. As I came across these fantastic and deeply interesting and complex characters my mind was blown away. I’m so fascinated with Jill. She’s a damn fierce and kickass heroine. I love that she’s a “straight shooter” – holds nothing back, speaks and acts what’s on her mind. I’m equally fascinated with her mysterious brother Jack and need to know more about him. But what I do know makes me love him too. His protectiveness and love towards Jill. They have a funny and honest relationship which I appreciate.
This story is layered with so many flawed, broken and complex characters. I want and need to no more about Jill, Jack, AJ and Luke. What makes them tick!! I savour every detail and enjoy when their past or secrets is revealed.
I love Ann’s writing. I want to lick the pages because her words evoke so many intense emotions. From within the characters and certain scenes as well. Her words and writing is hypnotizing and captivating. I can’t stop rereading her words. They are addictive and magical. This first book in the Jack and Jill trilogy was nothing but fabulous. Entertainment at its best!

There’s so much to say about this book. It’s suspenseful, sexy, romantic and addicting. The story is so consuming that you can’t turn the pages fast enough. The writing, complexity and depth of the characters is beyond brilliant. And it’s not just a story about romantic love, but sibling love too and what depths you would go to protect that sibling. Alternating between past and present, it revolves around siblings Jessica and Jude Day who, due to tragic circumstances, have to give up their lives and identities, including leaving behind loved ones and start over. They begin again as Jillian and Jackson Knight in the small neighborhood of Peaceful Woods where they meet an interesting cast of characters. Jillian is complex, intelligent compassionate but totally messed-up. Jackson is sexy, sweet and will do anything to protect his sister. To say any more than that would ruin the journey that needs to be taken. Jewel E. Ann has put together a gripping and clever story that I could not stop reading. It a fantastic start to the Jack & Jill series.
WOW! This book is something beyond unique. The storyline of this book grabs you and sucks you in to the point you cannot put it down. I love how Jewel writes and this book was right on point.
The inner turmoil that both Jack and Jill go through as they are adapting to their new lives is insane. One could not imagine the process it would have to take mentally to handle this kind of situation. I love the banter these siblings have as they try to get back on their feet. I laughed a lot during their conversations. Enter the next door neighbor and all hell breaks loose. Jill and AJ share such a priceless and bizarre connection that you can’t help but cheer them on.
What I really enjoyed is the blend of past and present in this book to give you a feel of why and how Jack and Jill came to exist. Where this book does mostly focus on Jill, you get a really good feel for Jack too as he struggles through the motions of starting over. Jewel once again wove a brilliant tale that flowed so seamlessly that when you get to the end you want to scream NOOOOOOOOO!!!!! So looking forward to the next in the series
This was AWESOME!!! If you’re in a book rut, pick this up! If you feel like everything you read is the same story, PICK THIS UP!! This is original storytelling at it’s best!
We meet Jillian and Jackson Knight as they watch the death of their former lives as Jessica and Jude Day. No, they aren’t ghosts, but their deaths have been faked. Their lives as they knew them are no more. It’s a little confusing at first, but stay with it because you will come to love and adore these characters. Leaving their lives in San Francisco, they are plunked down in an older community in Omaha, Nebraska. They pick new careers for each other, they spar with each other (because they are kind of like trained defenders/killers) and they are certainly the talk in their new neighborhood. As they try and settle in to their new lives, Jillian finds it hard to let go of her old life, the life that had Dr Luke Jones in it, her former shrink and possibly her true love/soul mate. We get flashbacks to her life as Jessica and watch her relationship with Luke unfold and it’s fascinating. I LOVE DR JONES! I want to crawl in that storyline and just live there with a bowl of popcorn. Jessica/Jillian has quite the traumatic past and we piece it together with each juicy morsel from these flashbacks. Pair that with her current fling with Sarge/AJ and it’s an addictive cocktail of stories. This ends with a bit of a cliffy, but I don’t care, I’m ready to dive into book 2 and continue to slowly get the answers to my remaining questions.
The characters in this series are addictive…every last one of them. The dialogue is fantastic and funny. The story kept me on my toes and I want more, I’m begging for more. Great read, highly recommend!
What did I just read??? No, seriously…WHAT.DID.I.READ.
This has to be one of the craziest, strangest, most oddly endearing books I have ever read. It’s a complete page-turner that took me on one wild ride. I honestly don’t even know what to say about this book other than READ IT. End of Day is a tangled tale.
Jillian and her twin Jackson have had their lives uprooted, upended, and they’ve landed in Omaha, NE, where they proceed to scandalize their new community…with Jillian the main perpetrator. The girl has issues, no doubt about it. But you can’t help but fall a little bit in love with her…I kind of want to be her, minus that whole drawing blood thing. This is her story, and what a story it is. Jillian is feisty, strong, ballsy, but because of what happened to her in the past she’s also damaged and vulnerable. She’s probably the most unique heroine I’ve ever read.
I loved the relationship the twins had- because they are twins, and because of their upbringing, they have such a special bond. Each takes care of the other in a way they can’t do for themselves. They are also fun and silly together, how you’d want to be with your sibling.
There’s so much depth to this story, so much character and intrigue, but there’s still so much more we have need to learn about these 2. The only real issue I had with this book was that I wanted some kind of conclusion/closure at the end- something that it made worth the time I put into reading it. It seemed like just as we were getting invested in all these characters, bam it was over. I’m really looking forward to the next 2 books in the trilogy, because I have to know what happens with Jillian and Aj, Jessica and Luke, and who knows what is to come with Jackson!
