A Beauty and the Beast retelling like no other! I absolutely loved the characters. I couldn’t keep myself from getting list in their love story. Demelza Carlton is an outstanding author. So glad I have more of her work in my TBR list.
I loved this version of the story. So original. I loved how
Demelza brought in characters from other books. Very good read.
This is an eminently satisfactory story
of deceit, cruelty, courage, honesty,
trust and love.
In today’s dystopia, it’s a ** most **
refreshing change.
Enjoy !!

Not A Big Fan Of This Retelling
This story flatlined early on and never recovered. Some scenes seemed rushed, others unnecessary, and the plot just didn’t flow well. There was nothing at all romantic about Zuleika and Vardan. Zuleika was a spirited enchantress, but Vardan lacked personality. Even the magic employed in the plot failed to add excitement. The writing was fine in pieces and parts, and I was curious to see the spin on the original tale. However, the story as a whole was disappointing.
Cruel enchantment of a really nice prince
I liked the way author Demelza Carlton transformed the traditional Beauty and the Beast fairytale. Here the cursed prince is an unsuspecting innocent, good guy enchanted only thanks to his power-hungry brother and the beauty he falls for is a powerful sorceress who finds that she is the one who unwittingly cast the spell. Trust issues and secrets work to keep them apart while his invisible servants plot to push them into each other’s arms.
The one jarring note was the unexpected heat at the story’s end that did not quite jive with the story’s fairytale vibe. Nevertheless it was a good, enjoyable story.
True to form. Fairytale with no full ending. Questions lay here that I wanted answers to. Decisions made with no resulting effects. The prince gets the girl. The story here was in the way things happened. The unique telling of this timeless story. The beauty of one child spoiled by the greed of another. Innocences stolen. Trust blurred. Loyalty tested. Love formed.
Narrator Mary Sarah has a very beautiful voice that transcends the fairytale realm. She has the ethereal quality of fantasy. I do warn those that choose to listen that my views of this audio my be skewed by the fact that I do not listen under normal speed, too slow. I do speed up my audio and find that the speed can match that of the story being told and lend a different light to the immersion in to the story.
Caution blood will be flowing…
I received this audiobook as part of my participation in a blog tour with Audiobookworm Promotions. The tour is being sponsored by Demelza Carlton. The gifting of this audiobook did not affect my opinion of it.
While the bones of this retelling are as set out in the original fairy tale, the way that the author fleshed out this retelling make it a compelling original. Beauty is not just a pretty non-entity; the prince is not just a hot-tempered jerk – the author gives us an alternate explanation for the curse, the curse caster and the villain that makes more sense than an enchantress coming out of nowhere to force tough love on a rude overly-entitled blueblood for no real apparent reason. I think I prefer this romantic retelling to the original fairy tale – I feel like a fly on the wall reading this rather than a loremaster deciphering the Iliad.
Suprising enjoyed this twist taking the enchantress as the main charcters made it unique. I particularly loved the spell itself. Now thinking back to the dancing scene from the classic you cannot help this versions being so perfect.
All I. All for a short sweet read it was perfect and I will definitely will read more
Spoiler alert!
There’s sexual violence for those that need a trigger warning. Honestly I wish I’d read some reviews first, so I’d have known. It’s safe to say that this wasn’t the sweet Beauty and the Beast retelling I was expecting. Once you get past this ( it’s fairly early in the story) it’s an interesting tale. I liked certain other twists. It’s a short story. I finished in a few hours. If you’re looking for a quick entertaining read, then here you go.
I thought this was a awesome book. I loved so many things about this book that it would take pages for me to write them all. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone and I wish I could give it more then five stars I can’t wait to start the next book.
This was definitely worth reading. It was a really different take on one of my favorite fairytales.
Excelent way to retell a fairy tale.
This definitely is a twist on Beauty and the Beast. Different story, different approach to the characters appeal. Love does triumph in the end.
An age old, well known story taken to greater heights by this author’s imaginative background & additions. An enhanced fairy tale, complicated with additional magics, for the romantic adult. The familiarity of the main storyline so clouded this tale can still hold the reader’s attention.
King Thorn, a man more hideous on the inside than out, forced young Zuleika to create a curse in exchange for her family’s lives, then tormented her with the vilest of acts. Escaping this monster, she used her powers to aid others until she vowed to her father to save his fortune and his good name by uncovering the pirates who stole his ships and his precious cargo. It was that quest that brought her to an enchanted island and into the company of a man cursed to live as a beast.
Enchant by Demelza Carlton – Excellent Retelling! I really enjoyed this retelling of Beauty and the Beast. Not for kids but well written. Had several excellent twists and a really wretched villain. Exceptional world building in this one! I highly recommend it! Happy Reading!
This book is a delight. I loved it. A beautiful telling of a classical story.
I enjoyed this. It’s a retelling, but Carlton did manage to add some plot points and characterizations that I’ve never seen before in a Beauty and the Beast retelling. And I do like Beauty and the Beast retellings, so I feel that I’ve read a decent amount of them. The writing was good, at times it came across as a bit over-dramatic, but other times it was really beautifully done. Characterizations were fleshed out for the main characters and I was invested in the romance as well as the other plots. And the romance was at times a subplot and at times the main point- which was a nice pacing, I thought, as it was able to come and go from the spotlight. The other characters were pretty shallow but they really weren’t given much time in the limelight. The various plotlines were well-told, though. I’d definitely read some of Carlton’s other retellings.
I loved the book. Wished the story line would have gone on for a few more chapters. I didn’t want the story to end.
This was a good read. An creative twist to a familiar tale, and well-written.
I would gladly read other books by this author.
