How has no one buzzed about this one yet?
For being the 5th book in the Throne of Glass series, I think Maas is doing a good job of keeping the central conflict moving along, introducing new plotlines, and bringing back old characters to maintain momentum.
That being said, this one did have the main character hatching a few too many secret plots in the background without the other characters (or the reader) being in the loop, only to reveal them in a rapid spew at the end. That worked for me much better in the last book than in this one, perhaps because of the note this book ends on.
Would still def recommend if you’ve been a fan of the other books in the series. Don’t even think about picking this up if you haven’t read the other books. It probably wouldn’t stand very well on its own.
Just finished Empire of Storms by Sarah J Maas, now I am anxiously awaiting both the conclusion of Throne of Glass and A Court of Thorns and Roses, have to say she is honestly my favorite author of the moment, her books are so well written and the worlds and characters she creates are absolutely breathtaking. Love love love!!!
Holy Shitake ! What a ride. I was slung to the left, thrust to the right, crushed into the corner, dunked under black water, floated on a cloud, and then flung over a cliff with no bottom. Yep, a total E ticket ride with no safety bar. That ending How can I go on with real life with that ending ? How ? Ms. Maas you are a beast. 😀 And I thank you. This series just gets better and better.
The break down, there is love, quests, deaths, fighting, sex, flirting, shifting, sinking, fires, ice, snark, twists, betrayals, truths, blood, and critters. Don’t miss it, read the series.
I loved this entire series and would 18943892/10 recommend to people. This twists and turns of this book absolutely BROKE ME. Also because of this author’s trademark “ending the book with a cliffhanger” I AM IN PAIN BECAUSE BOOK 6 HAS NOT YET COME OUT
The fifth book in the Throne of Glass series. First of all let me start by saying my poor fragile little heart. Absolutely loved it. Sarah J. Mass is a queen. I’ll have to take a break in reading anything for a while. I’ll keep you guys posted on my heart. If you haven’t started this series yet I highly recommend you do.
it was absolutly amazing
28 days ago I started this series…
One month ago, Past Caryn was thinking oh this is fun and exciting! Celaena participating in a competition to be King’s Champion and healing after a long time living in hell. This is so great.
Bahahahahaha! Oh Past Caryn. You know nothing. Seriously, remember when that’s all the story was? Look how far we’ve come.
That cliffhanger is the single most intensely cruel thing I think I’ll ever live through. I mean I had friends warn me there was one. But there is no way to be properly braced for that. No way at all.
2019 can’t come soon enough.
Wowzers! I’m am utter speechless, I’m not sure what to say about this book. It’s so jammed packed. But the ending WTF!!! Seriously why you gonna do me like that? New relationship, stronger bonds, new enemies, old friends and allies and so much more. So many twists, turns and unexpected moments to be had in this books. I really hope you give it a chance as I did.
After defeating the previous King of Adarlan and helping Dorian claim the crown, Aelin Ashryver Galathynius along with Rowan Whitethorn, Aedion Ashryver and Lysandra have arrived in Terrasen to claim Aelin’s crown and armies to fight the war. Only, the lords that still exist have decided she is not fit for the throne, even though 1. They hadn’t meet her, 2. She has been fighting while they have been sitting on their butts. She has been forced out of her home once again, until she prove herself to these so called lords. But Aelin is going to gather an army and protect her home wether the lords want her to or not.
“To call in old debts and promises. To raise an army of assassins and thieves and exiles and commoners. To finish what was started long, long ago.”
While Aelin, Rowan, Aedion and Lysandra are in the North dealing with the pompous Lords of Terrasen. We have Elide Lorcan on the run trying to get to Terrasen away from Vernon and Perrington in Morath while being stalked by Lorcan. Than King Dorian Havilliard Is left in Adarlan trying to clean up after the Glass castle was destroyed, he is soon being attacked.
Aelin really surprised me lots in this book. When the lords rejected her as Queen, I expected the old sixteen year old Celaena to loose her temper and chuck a tantrum, but she didn’t, she strategically and calmly told them where they could shove it. That she would return with an army of her own. So that was a memorial scene. Then there were a few scenes in the book where she went back to her old ways where she was secretive, but at the end, she was the most selfless person in this entire book. I feel that her character has been the most misjudged and mistreated throughout this series. I was in tears for her in the last few chapters and I just couldn’t handle the crap she has had to endure and will have to endure, for the ones she loves and calls family. The steamy moments between Aelin and Rowan, wow, get a girl an extinguisher. A lot of people are complaining about this about this but they need to understand, that one Aelin is now older, she is with a full blood hot Fae male that have a soul deep connection, so it’s going to have to eventually go down that road. Plus it’s was tasteful and not over the top.
Rowan is still my favourite alpha male, he just owns my heart and soul. He is still MINE! He is just Fae-fection, the dedication, loyalty he has to Aelin and the rest of the court of friends is fabulous. The connection between Rowan and Aelin just keeps growing and growing and my theory of them being mates was true. (Sorry spoiler) I did predict this back in Heir of Shadows when we first meet Rowan. There is sex scenes in this book, so if there is any young readers please keep this in mind when reading this book. But my heart is shattered in pieces along side with Rowan after the battle at the end… oh Rowan come here, I’ll comfort you.
The more Lysandra makes appearances in the books the more I enjoy her character. She has become a great new addition to Aelin’s Court, she is all sorts of bada**, I love her transformations, her snarky remarks and her playfulness.
Manon Blackbeak is one cool chick. She is kicka**, strong, and willing to put her life on the line for the ones she cares for. She has been given a real crappy situation, where she needs to witness her second Asterin being killed because of something she had done.
Dorian is now the King of Adarlan, but without his kingdom he is on the run with Aelin and the rest to try and stop Erawan. But while he is still trying to heal after the collar he is being questioned as to why he is following Aelin’s commands and not setting them
Aedion, I still love him and his character, although there were a few times that I wanted to slap him over the back of his head. But he is just like Aelin so it is expected that there would be times they would clash. But when he confronted Gavriel, wow *cry, my heart broke you could hear the heartache in the words he said to him about his mother. The on the beach with Rowan after Maeve, *sob, the devastation in his words, when he was trying to comfort his brother.
I’m relieved to be able to give this book 5 stars. I wasn’t sure any of the books could ever rival the second in this series. There’s finally some good banter again, I actually looked forward to all the perspectives, and the battles were incredible. I found myself struggling at times between the action, but once again we have the relationships and banter that made the second book so enjoyable. I desperately missed Chaol in this story, but the cast of new characters made it worthwhile. I did find it somewhat annoying that it seemed everyone was pining after someone – as if a relationship was the only way to keep their stories from lacking. The ending was absolutely incredible and so well done.
I’m worried about losing that momentum with the next book (as much as I love Chaol) and going “back” to his story riding off the absolute gut clenching ending that was this book.

: Empire of Storms
: Throne of Glass #5
: Sarah J. Maas
: 5/5
You can clearly notice that the writing of Sarah has improved a lot compared to the first book in the series. I already noticed in the last book how all these different story lines started to come together and this book just took it a step further. It has to be my favorite book so far in this series. I just can’t tell you how much I adored this adventure. The sexy scene’s in this book definitely went further than the previous books and let me tell you hunny, I did not mind at all (give me more haha). The characters were everything as well, the new ones, the old ones, I love how their development is going and can’t wait to see where it goes next. THE ENDING OF THIS BOOK, THOSE LAST CHAPTERS.. I was entranced, could not stop reading. I loved loved how everything is coming together and when everything was revealed that was such a shock, but I was also just like YEAH YEAH. Those plot twists and the pain of those last chapters… I laughed, I hoorayed, I cried… It was just like an magician that explained his/her/their tricks if you know what I mean. If you haven’t noticed it before, my emotions were/are all over the place and I need to read the next book asap.
A lot of my reviews are also available with photo at my Bookstagram: @justmyfantasyworld
I enjoyed reading this book! An amazing rollercoaster, any fantasy fan would love to go through!!
This was my first review of 2017, and believe me, this was a complex review to type back then and worst now since I read it a second time in 2021. I’m enjoying the Throne of Glass series, and I’m sad to know I will finally finish reading this series. I’ve held off on finishing this series because I don’t want it to end, but I know it does end. If you haven’t started this series and love the Young Adult genre with fantasy elements, I recommend starting this series.
Storyline/My Thoughts: I love strong, kick-butt female characters, and Aelin Ashryver Galathynius is definitely one of those characters. Empire of Storms starts with the characters ending up in Aelin’s homeland, but unfortunately, they are not very welcoming. They believe she is not the ruler they want due to her taking so long to get back. They want to prove she can be Queen of Terrasen. They also are scared of Aelin’s power. Aelin is determined to win back Terrasen. Unfortunately, she’s going to go through so many tribulations in this book. She finds out the truth of what needs to happen to send back Erawan. She also finds out the price of what happens.
Let me just say in this story, and I love Rowan even more. He has been my favorite male character in this story due to who he has become since the third book. He is very protective of Aelin for a particular reason that will be unveiled in this book.
I do not want to go into the story much because I don’t want to spoil it for anyone who hasn’t read this book or series. There are many action-packed and dramatic scenes in Empire of Storms and a lot of romance too. Not the too steamy kind like you will find in Adult Romance books, but it’s there.
Be prepared to be on the edge of your seat at the very end of the book. I was not prepared for how the book was going to end. I thought Erawan was the biggest issue that Aelin had to deal with, but unfortunately, she will face someone far worse.
Standalone or Part of series: It’s part of the Throne of Glass series.
Cliffhanger: Yes.
Would I recommend this book? Yes. I highly recommend this book to readers that need to be distracted for a while and placed in a world of powerful Fae, evil demons, and an all-powering, loving group of characters that will follow the main character Aelin anywhere. This series has prevented me from getting into a reading slump this year, and I look forward to reading the next book in the series. I don’t want to finish the series. I have to because it’s been sitting on my bookshelves for so long. I held off for so long. I hope I don’t have my heart broken, but I know Sarah J. Maas will give me an epic end to this series.
Oh, my goodness! I’m an emotional mess right now. This book was so so good! and I suffered so much! I know I’ve said the same for the previous books, but man it’s true. I was this close to crying tbh.
I’m loving the character development the characters are having. I feel they, and series, have changed so much since book 1 that it almost feels like a whole different series. I love the world, the characters, the plot, everything.
I love the new characters, especially Elide. I ABSOLUTELY LOVE HER! All I want to do is read more about her story. I know we met her in Queen of Shadows but I feel that is in this book where we get to know her more.
I know many people loved Heir of Fire and it’s the fav of many. And honestly, I don’t quite get it. ‘Cause this book is the best one so far, definitely.
OMG THE ENDING IS SO AMAZING I LOVE THIS SERIES SO DAMN MUCH!!!!
Ok ummmmmm what!! Did it really just end like that!! I am all over the place right now.
This series is absolutely amazing. Even at Book 5 it is still going strong and keeps getting better and better. Definitely one of my absolute favorite fantasy series.
I’m a tad anxious…there are only 2 books left and so much left to wrap up!! Guess I better jump on it and get this train moving
Wow! This is probably my favorite book of the series. It took me on an emotional roller coaster, and left me broken and bleeding and waiting for the next book to see what happens. This book brings all of the story lines together and builds the characters. When I first read this book, I was left reeling for YEARS waiting for the next book to come out. Luckily, the series is finished now, and you can read knowing that it goes on. All of the love, passion, scheming, hate, tempers, etc., all come together in this book and make for an excellent story.
This book broke me, the emotions I went through reading it. Just wow!!
This book is a great fantasy read. I was hooked from the start and devoured every word. A great read, I really enjoyed it.
Oh, my goodness. the last review was made four years ago…
anyway, I am in LOVE with this novel and its series. Aelin is a great character, and I couldn’t stop turning the pages. READ this BOOK!!!!
Another enthralling addition to an absolutely amazing series! Each page is chock full of hilarity as well as oh my gosh!!! A page turning story that I haven’t been able to put down. I cannot wait to see what is in store for Erilea next!
Love this series, and this book was great!
Aelin and Co. travel away from Terrasen to call in some favours, and try to rally armies for the upcoming battle, and in turn, prove her worth as Queen. Elide meets Lorcan, and if anyone can get him to behave more human, she can.
There are more valg creatures introduced, more battles and a tear-jerking ending.
Great read!
