An enchanting comedy of errors, Emma remains a classic two centuries after it was first published. Emma Woodhouse is a privileged young woman whose greatest pleasure in life lies in matchmaking for anyone but herself. Written, by Austen’s own admission, as “a heroine whom no one but myself will much like,” Emma’s charm and wit exist in constant tension with her capacity for selfishness and … selfishness and vanity. Despite her intelligence, Emma stumbles from one catastrophe to the next–from a misguided attempt at securing a husband for her friend Harriet Smith to her disastrous meddling in the affairs of new arrivals Frank Churchill and Jane Fairfax–before ultimately falling into her own unexpected happy ending.
Both a discerning look at the strictures of Regency England and an enchanting comedy of errors, Emma remains a classic two centuries since it was first published.

This was my second Austen book, on the heels of Pride & Prejudice, so the reading was much quicker because the language “flow” was easy to understand by then. Another great one from Jane, and read this within a week. I found all characters to be strongly written and the plot was very original for it’s time. The story was a delight to read from …
Handsome . Clever . Rich
No other character of any novels can be adorned with the above description that says it all. Introducing to you ,another witty , entertaining and page turning romantic novel by Jane Austen about the much celebrated love story of the most annoying character in jane austen novels-Emma Woodhouse.
Emma , who …
Jane Austen . . . Need I say more. One of the few books that I have read more than once. First, to learn more about England in the early 1800s, then to enjoy the different characters that drove the plot forward. Read and enjoy!
It’s only been a few years since the last time I read “Emma,” but I couldn’t resist Audible’s new dramatization, narrated by Emma Thompson and performed with a semi-full cast (though I think there were only two others involved: another man and woman performed all the male and female characters). It might have been my favorite experience of the …
Jane Austin’s books are delightful because of her style of writing. She is very clever yet realistic about human emotions.
Austen at the height of her brilliance. “Emma” is a multi-layered tale of self-deception and self-discovery; as claustrophobic and at the same time as sparkling as the interior of a glass Christmas tree ornament. At one level it’s a telling of the familiar “what you wanted was right there all along”. But much of what we see is filtered through the …
One of my favorites!

One good reason for reading any 19th century novel is the writing style. Just after WWI, American writers abruptly stopped using this style, meaning we stopped sounding like Jane Austen. It happened overnight, with the appearance of the work of writers like Gertrude Stein, Sherwood Anderson, Ernest Hemingway, and Katherine Anne Porter. Just …
Emma is a fabulous book. Everyone should read it at least once!
This one definitely starts off pretty slow and, because of that, the ending felt a little rushed to me. The character development is really great; I went from strongly disliking Emma to actually really enjoying her by the end.
Although Pride and Prejudice is arguably her best work, Emma is a unique Austen character because she has no financial need to marry. The original “girl power” book and my sentimental favorite book of all time. I like to think that Emma and Angela would be friends. http://amzn.to/2cLgYlG
Question of the week – Of all the books you read in high school, which was your favourite?
This book needs no further acknowledgement from me as I’m pretty sure everyone and has probably already given it a go. It is no mistake that this is one of Austen’s most popular work and Emms is one of the most popular Austen heroine of all time. Girls of …
I do like Jane Austen. While I haven’t read all her works yet, I think Pride and Prejudice still has a higher ranking from me, though I wonder if I’d like this one better if I read it. Some of the older classics are just better read from a physical book. Mr Knightly is a wonderful character; it’s easy to like him long before Emma even realizes …
Oh Emma! What to say? There is currently so much to-do going on about you! Here is my take: When I was a senior in high school, I took an English literature class. We were required to do four book reports throughout the year. One would be a traditional report, one a cover re-creation with back blurb, one a monologue, and one a dialogue. You could …
If I love you less, I could have said more — one of the greatest lines ever delivered.
It’s Austen, it’s worth the read.
Love this book!!!
