Emma Wilkins must face the monster in the woods for the fate of the world.
An invasion is coming.
Deep in the shadows of Glenridge Forest, creatures of myth and legend are returning. They gather and wait for a day soon to come. A day when they will be unleashed upon the planet.
Daydreamer Emma Wilkins is eleven years old and lives on Belle Street in the city of Saint Martin. All Emma wants is … Saint Martin. All Emma wants is a friend. She finds one in Jake Milligan, a new boy in town whose father has gone missing. Together, they embark on a mission to find him.
During her adventure, Emma discovers that all stories are true. All legends are real. The monsters of nightmare exist. She learns about a power greater still, one who watches and waits, preparing for the day when the world is ready for his return.
On her way to an impossible confrontation, Emma must conquer her fears and learn how to defeat the monster in the woods. At stake are the fates of those she cares about most and that of the entire world.

Wonderful start to a new series, World of Light, that is appropriate for contemporary fantasy readers ages 10 and up. I loved how the magical components were introduced gradually leaving you to wonder if everything was real or just in 11-year-old Emma’s very active imagination! I did find Emma a little annoying in her single-tracked thoughts but overall she seemed to be a very sweet and brave little girl. The actual story of a magical world in ours was well-developed and I loved the creatures we were introduced to. Jingles was super adorable and I wish I had my own!! It was also priceless when the unicorn casually went by after dinner. LOL. I give this book 3 1/2 stars and look forward to seeing what Emma does next. Definitely recommended.
I am voluntarily leaving an honest review after reading a free advanced copy of this book.
This is a pretty good book for younger readers. A young girl for the heroine and disappearing people from the town. And of course a minotaur. I will be keeping an eye out for Emma’s next adventure as I am sure this spunky young girl will be up to something exciting.
I enjoyed reading Emma and the Minotaur by John Herrera, it was full of vivid colours and drama. He created a piece of work that was fun to read and had me wondering where it was going to end up. It was full of twists and turns, with a surprising ending.
It is full of monsters and magic, a few secrets that have to be discovered along with some cute and cuddly critters that you just have to meet. It has friendship and loyalty, and a family who will do whatever need to be done to help each other, even if it is difficult and frightening.
I believe this book would be enjoyed by tweens through to young teens. Who wouldn’t want to read about a fairly average 11 year old who has the adventure of a lifetime. Doesn’t every young girl (and some old ones) dream of becoming a princess and saving the world?
Great read! I am interested in reading the next book to find out what amazing things she can do.
The first half of this book is very slow. Emma meets a new friend at school, whose father has gone missing and they decide to look for him in the woods, where Emma hears strange music. Some characters come and go and no one but Emma seems to remember they existed. Things change but no one but the reader is aware. The last quarter of the book is so much different than the rest; it is fast paced and full of magic. A lot is left unexplained and must continue in the next book.
However, the characters are very flat and it is hard to connect with them. There is so much mystery about them but you are given so little information that the need to learn more isn’t that compelling.
This was a good book, but I probably won’t continue with the series.
This book was an interesting start on what promises to a rich world filled with fantastical creatures and song inspired magic. A young girl with the determination and bravery to take on the mystery of missing people in her town makes for a very charming story. Looking forward to the next one.
