KILLER OR TARGET?Dr. Kelly Irving knew her husband, attorney Jack Harbaugh, was acting strangely, but figured they’d get through it. When she backed out of her garage that morning, she thought her car hit a bump. Instead, its progress was stopped by the body of a man her husband recently represented. Not only that, the dead man had been shot by her husband’s gun. The police who investigated made … investigated made it clear that Jack was a primary suspect.
Kelly couldn’t decide if Jack was a murderer or marked as the next victim. As things continued to escalate, they were forced to put their marital differences aside and concentrate on keeping Jack alive while discovering who was behind the whole thing.

This book is a quick listen and reminded me of watching a police TV show. A young lawyer, Jack Harbaugh, and his wife. Dr. Kelly Irving, are caught up in a murder investigation after Jack takes on a new client. What he thinks is a simple drug charge turns into so much more and soon Jack and Kelly are running for their lives.
The book is entertaining, but nothing too unique or different. The characters could have been better developed and more interesting and I found Jack to be especially aloof. Not a bad book, just nothing too exciting. The writing reminded me more of a screenplay than a novella. But, I would probably read another book by Dr. Mabry.
The narrator, Bill Nevitt, does his usual excellent job and is the highlight of this book in my opinion. He always does a great job and keeps the listener’s interest even if the book is a little lackluster. All in all, this is the type of book that would make a good beach read: entertaining enough to keep your interest without too much brain power being expended.
I was given the opportunity to listen to this book by the narrator and chose to review it.
This was my first Richard L. Mabry’s book. This short mystery suspense is great and intriguing, filled with unexpected twists and turns. Bill Nevitt did a great job with the narration. I like his voice. I received this free review copy audiobook at my request and I have voluntarily written this review.
Great mystery suspense with lots of questions around every corner. What starts as a normal day for Kelly and her husband quickly turns into a variable who done it as she tries to figure out if her husband is responsible for the dead body in her driveway or not.
Bill Nevitt is a good narrator and has the perfect pacing for this short tale.
This book was given to me for free at my request and I provided this voluntary review.
This is an entertaining murder, mystery novella with ethical dilemmas, deception and suspense. What attorney Jack Harbaugh thought would be an easy, cut and dried case, turns into a life-threatening nightmare for him and his wife, Kelly. The narrator of the audiobook does a great job of creating tension and bringing the characters to life. I especially liked Kelly, she had strong convictions, determination and you could feel her emotions and her love for her husband. Gun running, murder, car crashes, intrigue and suspense will keep you enthralled for the length of this story.
Emergency Case by Richard L. Mabry is an intriguing novella not to be missed by readers who enjoy fast-paced mysteries. Although this author is known for medical thrillers, this story has little to do with the medical world and yet is interesting and keeps the reader’s attention, wondering how in the world the situations will turn out. Jack is a lawyer who has taken on a case that just might be his last case and his physician wife is quickly entangled in the danger as well. Great characters, a quick-moving plot, and a mystery that has several twists that one doesn’t see coming all keep the pages quickly turning. The narrator of this audiobook, Bill Nevitt, does a great job giving voice to the characters and their story, making for an enjoyable listening experience. I listened to a complimentary copy of the audio version of the book and was not required to write a review. The opinions are my own.
I had not read any of Richard Mabry’s books before but I will be reading more. In reading a review of this book I read that Dr. Richard Mabry has written medical thrillers and is known for them. I will have to check into that 🙂 This book is a novella which i find good as you can read it quickly but bad as it ends so soon. The book covers a little bit of everything, faith, relationships, and suspense. Add in that Jack Harbaugh is a lawyer and Kelly Harbaugh is a doctor and you have a recipe for a great story.
The narration on this book was good. Bill Nevitt does a good job of snagging your attention from the very begaining. His voice sounds like an old detective radio show making you want to listen to more.
I was gifted this book with the understanding that I would leave an honest review.
whodunit, lawyers, doctors, murder, suspense *****
The doctor almost ran over the body, but she didn’t kill him. Her husband the lawyer defended him in court and it was his gun that did the deed, but he didn’t even know it had gone missing. Marital complications and illegal activities come in play, but it’s the suspense that really gets you!
Bill Nevitt is the narrator and is great as usual!
I entered and won this book in a giveaway. Thanks!

This was a nice easy to follow long thriller. It was quite short but still enjoyable and good if you have a few hours to fill in and hate stopping in the middle of a story.
Jack is a lawyer who gets talked, against his better judgment,in to taking on a shady client and then things go down hill from there for him and his doctor wife. What was a simple case snowballs into dead bodies, missing guns, car crashes and A moral dilemma . With the police questioning there every move and not sure who to trust the couple have to come together to stay a live.
The narrator (Bill Nevitt) was very good and the couple of hours just flew by in a blink as it was very well read .
You know your day is off to a bad start when you back over a body in your driveway.
The only thing that’s worse? When your wife backs over a body in your driveway … and you’re a lawyer who recognises the victim as a shady client. The kind who pays in cash, doesn’t want a receipt, and chats about the illegal gun deal he has going down.
So Jack Harbaugh day doesn’t start well, and it doesn’t get better. His handgun is missing, and it fires the same kind of bullets that killed the dead guy. He didn’t do it, so who is setting him up? How can he persuade the police he’s innocent? And what’s he going to tell his wife?
Emergency Case is a strong thriller that’s a mix of Richard L Mabry’s traditional medical thriller, and another personal favourite: the legal thriller. It also has a touch of marriage guidance—another of Mabry’s trademarks. He prefers to write about married couples rather than write romances. That’s good.
There are precious few Christian novels that feature married couples, whether happily married or otherwise. Mabry’s couples—including Leah and Jack—are what I call realistically married. There are good days and bad days (although I’m glad my bad days don’t include backing over a dead body in my driveway).
Emergency Case is a short novella, recommended for medical suspense fans.
