Josh and Clara’s story has literally left me speechless. Needless to say, I did not, could not, put this book down until the very last page. And it has been days since I’ve been able to hopefully bring my thoughts into perspective and tell the world how much I loved these characters; this story.
I had totally gone in blind thinking I knew nothing about the characters, thinking they were part of an interconnected series I had not read. I had no idea that the author had devised an ingenious plan and her books were starting to meld. All her characters were starting to combine for the greater good. The moment that I was reading and realized this was the book I’d been waiting for, the book that followed She’s Mine, my heart raced. I messaged the author immediately to ask her if I had it right; if they were connected.
I had not read anything about Josh previously, but to see how he was brought into the Captive Hearts series was brilliant. Now that I know how his story ends, I’ll be going back to the beginning to read about his journey, however troubling and depraved it may be.
Ellie Masters has woven a huge web of stories and melded them together. Embracing Fate is intense and painful at times. It focuses on the destruction and annihilation of the human trafficking slave trade. There are smoke and mirrors to keep you guessing, tragic scenes, eye-opening scenes, and everything in between. Ellie leaves no stone left unturned as she brings the reader deeper into the darkness.
Something in Josh’s eyes, his demeanor, his uncharacteristic leniency, keeps Clara questioning his actions. Even though he is turning her into the perfect slave, she senses regret, senses his disgust with himself, senses he is not the man he pretends to be. Josh brings the term master to a whole other level. When he trains a slave, he requires more than submission, he requires total and complete obedience, and he stops at nothing to get that. Clara senses Josh’s struggle in her training, senses his struggle with keeping control, but she can’t quite put her finger on what he is struggling with or why. But Clara senses enough that it brings her hope, hope that her monster isn’t quite the monster he may seem to be. Her faith in him is strong; it sets him off balance. If she doesn’t jump to conclusions, she may be able to avoid a very long trip back to the truth.
Their connection and chemistry continues to grow with each passing day. They are almost telepathic in their understanding of each other. Clara is wise beyond her years and never lets a hint go by. She learns to examine her surroundings and analyze everything. As a reader, we learn and discover along with Clara. It was such an enthralling journey to be part of. The author has a writing style like no other. The research she puts into her stories propels them into stories that seep into your mind and take residence. This story is unpredictable and amazing. I hated to see it end. I wish I could experience it all over again, and I think I will. I will not be caught off guard when book 3 hits the shelves. I will be ready and will enhance my experience by reading and absorbing all the emotions from the very beginning.
Embracing Fate by Ellie Masters
I was a monster, and they wanted me to unleash the beast inside of me.
“I tasted freedom. One step. That’s all that separated me from my past. As to my future? I could forge a better future.” – Josh
Josh was out; out of prison, out of money, out of luck. But he was free, and no one would ever lock him up again. Starting the five mile gimme to the nearest town was no picnic, but he’d faced much worse. The unexpected arrival of Kate Summers, his brother’s woman, set his nerves on edge. But Josh isn’t going to let the opportunity to leave the prison pass. He accepts the ride from Kate, and starts down the road to reparation, retribution and redemption…
“I didn’t like strong women . I preferred delicate and weak, something I could control, break, and mold to serve my desires.” – Josh
Josh finds himself in a precarious situation. If he does what’s being asked if him, he’ll utterly destroy an innocent, so that many can be saved. He’ll have all the money he can use or want, and the satisfaction of starting to make amends for his past. If he doesn’t, it’s back to prison… With those incentives, he agrees… One life destroyed, so many others will survive…
“If there was any good left in me, I wanted to free it. Live it. Breathe it. I wouldn’t forget my past. I couldn’t walk away from it, but I would bury it so deep even the devil couldn’t find it.” – Josh
“My circumstances were beyond comprehension. I kept thinking it was a trick. A sick, twisted prank of the worst kind. While I wished for nothing other than to escape back into blissful unawareness, reality snapped at me and forced me to face my current state.” – Clara
When Clara regained consciousness, she found herself kidnapped and about to become a victim of human trafficking. The drugs swirling through her veins left her fuzzy headed and unable to remember the events that led up to her current horrific predicament. Unsteady on her feet, unsure of her capabilities, Clara opts to gather her strength and marshal her thoughts before doing anything rash. She is but one of a roomful of 12 young women of various appearances and sizes.
“There wasn’t an obstacle that stood between me and my dreams. The ferocity burning in my veins led me ever forward. I just never imagined this would be my path, but I refused to be defeated. Somehow, someway, I would prevail.” – Clara
Clara, with the other young women, are bathed then dressed in ivory gowns; make up artfully applied and hair twisted and curled. Soon they would all come face to face with their new reality: slaves to rich and powerful men; their new Masters.
“The rocking of my body stilled, and I sat in complete silence as I took stock of my new reality. I had been sold. I belonged to a monster, but I would never give him my mind. My body might not be something I controlled, but I could choose what happened next. I could meet him as his victim or as something else.” – Clara
“This girl… She’s going to give me everything. Not because I bought her, and not because she fears me. She’s going to do it because pleasing me will be the one thing she wants most in life. Kate thinks I’m going to rescue her. Instead, I’m going to break her in the most delicious way.” – Josh
Josh and Clara find themselves caught up in an intricate and intriguing dance; one of danger and desire. Josh is determined to accomplish what he promised to do, and Clara is as determined to not lose her sense of self, regardless of the overwhelming attraction she is experiencing towards Josh.
“Something pulsed between us. Joining us on the deepest, most primal level where dark urges took root . His masculine strength bound together with an undeniable dominance which radiated off him in waves. I felt that power deep in my bones and my body answered. I feared those other men— lesser creatures. But him? He pulled at me with an irresistible force. I belonged to him.” – Clara
Learning to play the role required, no, DEMANDED of her, Clara discovers unplumbed depths within herself; tendencies unknown but not denied. Clara becomes convinced there is great strength in utter surrender, but only one man will be able to demand that of her: Josh. Dangerous and deadly, Josh and Clara face almost insurmountable obstacles in their path to their final destination….
“Holding her naked in my arms set my entire body ablaze. Her defiance stirred my desire to dominate. Her compliance shook the pillars of my soul. In this battle, Clara had no idea she had already won. I would give her everything.” – Josh
Like a sudden sharp strike to the solar plexus, Josh takes your breath away. Forbidding, dark, granite in his eyes, he is the epitome of a Master. Yet Clara, quiet and sweet, has an unbending will of titanium contained within her fragile body as well. Well matched in temperament and desires, these two characters emerge flaming from the pages and capture your attention from the first sentence to the last. Another masterpiece from Ellie Masters!
This story is the best!!!!!! It’s about one man finding his soul and earning it back from the brink!!!! No one writes this better than Ellie Masters. Read the books that came before Command, Control, Collar — this sets the story in Embracing Fate. She’s mine begins the journey and directly ties into Embracing Fate. For the complete story start with Hearts Ashes to New, then to Angel Fire Rock series….. these complete the underlying story Ellie is weaving for us. The Becoming his series also ties into the main story line with some extra visits from the main characters. While the story may seem complex in 13 books — the flow is excellent and has the reader on the edge of our seats waiting to get to the end. Each piece is brilliantly woven together!!!! Love Love Love — can’t wait for the last book to finish this story!!!!!!!!
Embracing Fate is raw, harsh and not for the faint of heart. Yet, it is utterly and completely enthralling. This dark romance plays out in the depraved, ruthless and seedy world of human trafficking. I was stunned by the intensity of this book and often times found myself holding my breath, sitting on the edge of my seat as events unfolded. I could not put it down!
The dynamic between Clara and Josh is all consuming, passionate, carnal, and powerful. In order to save her he is forced to drag her into his world. He has no choice but to make her his slave. For all his ruthlessness, cold demeanor and bravado Clara sees the real Josh, the man beneath the mask. He calls himself a monster but he’s her monster. A man trying to atone for his past sins.
Can I just say that I felt like I was inside a roller coaster car when it goes into a loop! Wow! Debra @ Janise’s Jivin’ Book Blog
Embracing Fate by Ellie Masters is the 2nd in the Captive Hearts Series and it will be taking you on a ride that will make you wonder if you will ever get off. It is written in a way that has you wondering if you can make it to the end. Ms. Masters is not afraid to take you into the dark with only a little candle for light. It is powerful and scary but you won’t regret a single minute of the read. It was for me a deeper, darker book then the first (She’s Mine) but Josh and Clara’s story needed to be this way. When you have an author that can take you into the dark with her characters, you really have to love that it happens. Not all “love” stories are light and happy. All characters are not likeable from the beginning nor are the characters you assume in the first few pages are the “good”guys are truly that easily explained. Characters are flawed and imperfect but it doesn’t mean you can’t love them or understand them. With this story, our author has with Josh and Clara and the others in their story made them complex and made you think about shades of gray.
So excited that I am reading this series!
This is an incredible book and it is a masterpiece in the use of language. It is the use of words that pulls you into the story and makes the suspense almost unbearable and the depth of feelings whether good or bad so intense that the reader becomes entrenched. The first books I read from Ms. Masters were The Changing Role series and I was hooked, so it was really great to see those characters again especially when added to Forrest from Angel Fire. The basis for this book is ugly – sex slave traffickers – especially the children but it is so important to the plot. The suspense builds throughout the book, but there are scenes of pure love and tenderness that pull the reader back from despair and even sparks of humour. It is a riveting book that stays with you long after reading the last word and I loved every one of them.
Ellie Masters has outdone her selves. Wow, this book is one rollercoaster of emotions. From extremely angry to blissfully happy and everything in between.
The words are consuming and I had difficulties putting this book down.
The characters are not flawless but human. This topic is still also reality in today’s world, while it shouldn’t . There were pages when couldn’t hold my tears. I haven’t read many books this good. I highly recommend this book series.
Omg!! I absolutely loved the first Captive Hearts book and was beyond excited to read Embracing Fate. I was not disappointed. It was intense, gripping, and had me glued to my seat. I devoured this book! I LOVED IT!!!
Josh and Clara’s story is incredible! Their’s is full of redepemtion (it is possible), discipline, faith and forgiveness. It also proves that the monsters are not always who they seem to be. A person can change and move forward. I love this story.
