You’re never too old to run away from homeEllie Dwyer, 61, is convinced bad luck comes in threes, and not just garden-variety, oh-well bad luck. How many people have to flee not one, but two natural disasters? And in between the wildfire and the hurricane, her husband of nearly forty years suddenly up and left her for no reason she could fathom, disappearing from her life without a clue to his … life without a clue to his whereabouts.
Determined to reinvent her life, Ellie sets out on a journey across the country. Along the way to nowhere in particular, she buys a camper, becomes friends with a remarkable octogenarian, and starts to believe that good luck might also come in threes.
Or does it? That depends on how she defines good luck.

Best book I’ve read in a long time.
I enjoyed reading this book as my husband and I recently purchased an RV. I can relate to the mistakes she made as she learned by doing. It was a lot of fun sharing her life.
I loved it
So few novels are about older women, so for once we don’t feel left out.
It was well-written and well-appreciated. I was intrigued and entertained and informed about the camping life of single women. I’ve only done backwoods camping so this life was fascinating.
First time of this author for me. I am ready for her next. Once started, I read the book straight through. The topic and pace of the story is perfect. I hope Ellie will continue her courageous, life changing adventures and share them.
It is good to read about people in my age category.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book.
This is undoubtedly one of the best books I’ve ever read. The characters came alive to me as I read the book. Wonderfully well written!
Being a woman of certain age, and having been married and divorced I admired Ellie’s take charge of her life attitude. Inspiring!
Very good story about how far love will go. Enjoyed it a kot,
Interesting read about a woman who buys a camper and travels the country after her husband disappears. Surprising twist. It was a little slow getting started, but worth hanging in there. Strong woman. Glad to read the epilogue!
I really enjoyed this book. The characters are very likable and I really liked that it was about traveling in a camper. Easy to relate to!
This was one of the best books I have read. I didn’t want it to end. I wish I was younger so I could use everything I read about hooking up a trailer. I will read more book from this author.
This book was very different. I could not put it down. Ellie Dwyer is a character not to be missed. Along with her met along the way friends. She is a genius of invention. The humor alone is worth the read. Campers will live this book. I have never camped but fell in love with the ingenuity of campers. That is a small part of this lovely book.
Enjoy.
I enjoyed the story, especially of Ellie re-making herself after her husband left and entering the RV community, which I found fascinating. Also finding new friends who made such a difference in her life.
I just finished reading Ellie Dwyers Great Escape by Diane Winger.
I really enjoyed this story on a lot of levels. As someone who travels part-time in a van I really enjoyed watching someone go from never having had the experience on their own to becoming a seasoned traveler, and I really enjoyed those aspects of the story. I also was pleasantly surprised by the twists and turns in Ellie’s personal backstory. I found all the characters very likable and I wanted to learn more about them and know them more.
Even though I didn’t intend to, I found myself reading the whole book throughout the day, wanting to keep reading and learning more. I would have to say that the only criticism I have is that I feel like there could be another whole book that could be written for the time frame between the last chapter and the epilogue. I really wanted to know more about that time frame, those people and their adventures. I was sorry to put the book down when it ended. I think that anyone who enjoys descriptions of nature, especially the desert and the southwest will really enjoy this book. Anyone who’s exploring the possibility of traveling in an RV would appreciate this story. I really enjoyed it, and I’m happy to hear that Diane has written other books too. I look forward to reading more of her work. Check this out, you’ll like it!
Excellent and Fun Read! I can relate to Ellie as I’m an older, female camper too. Ellie takes off on a cross-country adventure by herself to find out what she wants to do with the rest of her life. This book is an inspiration to all women. It’s an easy read that was hard to put down and a disappointment when it was over….I wanted to keep camping with her!
Loved the story. Full of adventure, friendship, triumph and growth. Characters seem real. Great read. Great introduction to camping community and fellowship. Good women “coming of mature age” story. Get the book, you will like it. I did.
We’ve probably all been there — when you’ve been sucker-punched by life, maybe a few times in a row, and now you’re thorned: you’re a deer in the headlights stunned into inaction. Reading about Ellie’s Great Escape finds you rooting not only for Ellie … but for yourself too. If Ellie can do this …! Thanks, Diane Winger!
I liked the book until they brought her husband into the picture. Then the plot went downhill for me
