Ella is an Edwardian Cinderella with an undead problem…The flu pandemic of 1918 took millions of souls within a few short weeks. Except it wasn’t flu, and death gave them back.Seventeen-year-old Ella copes the best she can; caring for her war-injured father, scrubbing the floors, and slaying the undead that attack the locals. Vermin they’re called, like rats they spread pestilence with their … pestilence with their bite. Ella’s world collides with another when she nearly decapitates a handsome stranger, who is very much alive.
Seth deMage, the new Duke of Leithfield, has returned to his ancestral home with a mission from the War Office — to control the plague of vermin in rural Somerset. He needs help; he just didn’t expect to find it in a katana-wielding scullery maid.
Working alongside Seth blurs the line between their positions, and Ella glimpses a future she never dreamed was possible. But in overstepping society’s boundaries, Ella could lose everything – home, head and her heart…

It was an ok book
Can’t wait to read the next one!!!
Good rewrite on the traditional Cinderella story. I always love to read stories about people that are dealing with difficult situations in positive ways. And end up in better circumstances because of that. Ella was a very caring young lady who bore her challenges with grace and dignity. ANd worked hard to do what was asked of her.
Great read. Portrays heroin as a strong principled woman.
Strange twist to a classic fairytale. Love it.
Ella was such a fun read! I loved the concept of a totally-plausible zombie out-break as the backdrop of a love story.
Recognisable elements of the familiar Cinderella, but a distinctly different interpretation.
So, who knew that Cinderella and zombies would be such an entertaining combination! Stayed up to 3 AM to finish it.
I haven’t read or seen Pride and Prejudice and Zombies yet, but I feel like if that book had a baby with Cinderella, then Ella, The Slayer would be born…
It’s the classic take on Cinderella: Ella is a servant in her own home as her Stepmother and 2 stepsisters lord over the place while her father remains catatonic after the War. Add in the Pride and prejudice element: Handsome Duke moves in next door and falls for the stubborn, feisty young woman, even after the evil older stepsister lays claim. Because a single man in possession of a fortune MUST be in want of a wife! Now throw in some zombies!!
I kept getting confused with the time period. It’s set around 1919 and WWI is slightly over, yet there were times I felt it leaned more toward the Victorian era and other times when it felt more modern.
It starts off slow. I mean snails pace! Then the ending creeps up and blows everything to pieces, almost literally! It was an interesting take on Zombies, going into more of a necromancer direction with bees and a queen than the more common, no thoughts just feed AKA The Walking Dead zombie.
I also liked how Ella handled the Duke’s proposal. There wasn’t much time for romance and the chemistry between the two was lacking. That part of the storyline could have used some sprucing up. I loved the Cinderella aspect! When she finally fought back against the crazy B****es I was cheering her on!!
Ella the Slayer is the first of a four book series. It is a retelling of Cinderella, but a very gritty storyline with Zombies. Brilliant world building with phenomenal characters. Truly Awesome READ.
I truly love when I can read a book and get lost in the story. I had a hard time trying to put it down. All I wanted to do was keep reading till it was done, can’t wait to have money to get the next book so I can get lost in that one too.
Decent retelling.
Quick read and a new take on the old Cinderella story.
There are a lot of fairytale makeovers these days, and a lot of zombie stories but few have the ability to bind both into a realistic page turner the way this one has. It just does everything right while not being predictable.
It’s Cinderella with zombies. Set just after WWI, so lots of characters have PTSD to begin with. Amazing.
Ok,I thought I wasn’t going to like this but I actually do. It is a re-imagining of the Cinderella tale, but in a zombie apocalyptic time frame.
It’s sad and cute all at once and I love the fact that the “prince” is so down to earth and not a prince at all! That made me SUPER happy.
I got slimey, gooey, gloppy vibes from it, especially from the root of the zombie thing, that I don’t want to ruin for you. YUCK AND SAD!
I thought it was enjoyable.
Love the twist on the famous Cinderella!! Looking forward to reading the series!!
Nifty twist on Cinderella
Here is a new twist on the Cinderella story with her slaying the undead and the evil stepmother and sister becoming undead…. Ok interesting anyway.
Re-telling of Cinderella. Adding zombies was crazy, but the author makes it work.
