Never fall for a dark elf assassin. Before tonight, Cassie Tate’s biggest concerns were whether she could pass Algebra and how she was going to keep Elora, her emo best friend, from dressing her in a skimpy fairy costume for Halloween. Then Cassie saw something no human was ever supposed to see … an elf in its true form. The penalty for such a transgression … death. The only one who can save … The only one who can save Cassie now is the person most unlikely to do so. Triktaptic–assassin, spy, and the most feared warrior in the entire dark elf army.
Known to his associates as Trik, the dark elf assassin is the best to ever do the job. He kills whom he must, has mercy on no one, and never tires of seeing his prey fall. The dark elf king has plans to expand his kingdom into the human world, and Trik will lead the charge. But when a chance encounter brings the assassin face-to-face with the most beautiful human he’s ever seen, Trik faces uncertainty for the first time in his life. He knows the girl is much more than a simple human, but he fears the truth of her identity will slay him faster than an army of light elves. Now, Trik has a choice. Will he continue to follow the darkness in his soul that has led him so faithfully his entire life, or will the light and goodness within a simple human girl be enough to overcome the darkness in his heart.

Cassie Tate is a good girl, she doesn’t get into trouble and makes good grades. She is just your normal, average eighteen year old, or is she? Turns out, she apparently has a “chosen” who is not so average or normal.
Trick is a dark elf assassin that actually likes what he does. Remorse, never heard of it! He just does whatever the dark elf king asks him to, that is until he meets his chosen.
Trick has stayed in the darkness for centuries and has somehow managed to be paired with Cassie, the manifestation of all things good. Throughout the book, Trick struggles with accepting Cassie, because he believes that he doesn’t deserve her. The actual struggle that takes place within Trick about whether or not to change his evil ways helps make him a more dynamic character.
To me, Trick seemed much more real than Cassie. Throughout the whole book, Cassie is made out to be extremely good…..and pure……..and angelic (You might as well picture her with a halo!). On the other hand, Trick struggles with what is right and what is wrong. He doesn’t believe he is worthy of Cassie. He needs to overcome his darkness and realize that Cassie does have some faults.
Overall, I enjoyed Elfin! I have read the first three books of Loftis’ The Grey Wolves Series, and her writing is definitely hers! In Elfin, Cassie has a snarky best friend that reminds me of Jen (TGWS), but toned down a bit. I have come to the realization that I really like Loftis’ writing, and that I need to get a hold of more of her books!!!
Could not put down need to complete the series now to find out what happens next, leave you in a cliff hanger
In a YA Fantasy involving elves, I have certain expectations. This one fell a bit short. Honestly, the biggest issue I had were the elves. An elf assassin who’s centuries old is not going to roll his eyes all the time or speak and act like a teenager. If the book had been a paperback, I may have thrown it across the room by the tenth time he acted like an immature brat. The next issue I had was the outdated slang the high school students used. They came across more like a fifty year old attempting to be seventeen. While I understand slang changes all the time, the terms in this book were decades out of date. If those two issues were resolved, the book would be immensely better.
There were other issues, but for the most part, I could have overlooked them. The one that stood out the most were the heroine’s parents who hardly ever appear in the story. I found it a bit odd, and I honestly wasn’t sure why they were even in the book to begin with. It would have been better to make her an orphan. She supposedly loves her parents, and yet, we hardly see them. It was just a little strange to me. Almost like the author forgot about them and just randomly tossed in a mention of them here and there.
Overall, the storyline was good. It intrigued me enough I picked up book two, since it ended on a bit of a cliffhanger. As annoying as I found most of the characters, I can’t stand not knowing how the story ends. Hopefully, I’ll have the answers to my questions. If not, I don’t think I can last through a third book of eye-rolling elves.
Elves!! Yes, please, thanks very much!
Loved this story. Very entertaining and romantic.
Imagine your chosen, the other half of your soul. Meet Cassie, a human, and Trik, a dark elf assassin. Their story is great.
The book is good enough that I bought the other two books in the series. I’m a sucker for characters that I like and this book is full of them.
So good I read it again a year later.
This book inspired me to write short story’s of my own. I loved it!
A whole new elf world is built and experienced with this start of a series. It has interesting twists and turns, I didn’t forsee. A good story.
So good, I bought the other books in series!
I’m tired of books about ancient and wise old men dating teenage girls
A hero everyone would love to have
Can’t wait to read the next one!
I adored this book so much that I was was that it was over.
This is just the start of another GREAT series , have read ALL these as well
Couldn’t wait to read the next book!
This book has given me a new take on fairies and I love the use of both courts. Elfin is a must-read for anyone who wants something different from the normal good fairy standard. It has romance, action, and suspense it will keep you from sleeping and wanting more when you are done.
It is on my list to RE READ!!!!! It was an amazing read!!!! LOVED the characters and EVERY SINGLE thing about the book!!!!
Bland writing, unrealistic dialogue, unoriginal plot. Do not recommend.
