In 2005, Brandon Sanderson debuted with Elantris, an epic fantasy unlike any other then on the market. To celebrate its tenth anniversary, Tor is reissuing Elantris in a special edition, a fresh chance to introduce it to the myriad readers who have since become Sanderson fans. This new edition begins with a preface by author Dan Wells, the first person to read the completed novel, and a new … completed novel, and a new afterword by Sanderson explaining how he came to write the book and its place in the Cosmere, the unified universe of all his Tor novels.
Also included is an expanded version of the “Ars Arcanum” appendix, with more of the technical details of the book’s magic that fans can never get enough of.
Elantris was truly a milestone both for Sanderson and for the genre of epic fantasy. It deserves this special treatment, something Tor has done only once before, with Orson Scott Card’s Ender’s Game. Sanderson fans old and new will be excited to discover it.

This review is for the audio book. I have previously read the story multiple times. It’s such a rich and polished story that it is thoroughly enjoyable not matter the medium. My one complaint of this recording is that all the women sound the same while all the men have much more individual voices. Overall, my children and I really loved this one.
elantris is a fantastic book because it’s very original and creates a scene almost like a picture book branden sanderson is a very creative auther another one of his books is the rithmatist
Fantasy novels are one of my top three favorite genres. I love getting lost in a completely different world. Brandon Sanderson’s Elantris is one of the best I’ve ever read. The fact that this was a debut novel blows my mind. The story, the characters, every little detail seems to be woven in with a purpose.
Everything had balance. Characters had …
I just finished my first reading of this book, though I’ve wanted to read it for a while. It was awesome! The imaginative and thorough world building was one of my favorite aspects, and I liked this story enough to put it on my read-once-a-year shelf.
Very creative and well done!
Good start to his writing but you can tell it’s his first novel. Still worth the read
Warbreaker has been dethroned—there’s a new favorite Sanderson book on my shelves now!
Elantris is a delightful combination of heartfelt hope, political intrigue and maneuvering, and exploration of motivations—three things I love in my fantasy!
Prince Raoden is now one of my favorite male characters ever. With his optimism, desire for peace, and …
An epic tale of political intrigue in a world where magic is mostly a faded memory. Check out my full review at theshortstoryteller(dot)com!
I generally love Sanderson. This book is no exception.
Let me start by saying that I put off reading this book for far too long. Elantris is a book that has appealed to me for years, and it has sat on my shelf staring me down. Why did I not pick this up sooner? Well right after I purchased it I started seeing a lot of people saying how bad the book was. And sadly I let that get to me.
Why did I …
Sanderson is a master story teller – great book!
A great read in a single book!
I love Brandon Sanderson’s books. The stories are excellent, and I really connect with the characters emotionally. Elantris reads so well, and it is so easy to get swept up in. I really enjoyed it. I will say coming to this book later in my Cosmere reading it didn’t feel as polished as the Mistborn books, which doesn’t disappoint me as it is the …
An interesting world, and a good beginning to Sanderson’s overall works, though suffers slightly from some forgettable characters.
I wanted to give Elantris a higher rating than 3. It deserves higher, as it’s really a fantastic ‘stand alone’ fantasy tale, and a great starting point with Brandon Sanderson’s work. The reason I’m rating it a little …
Can’t go wrong with Sanderson, and this debut novel is so worth the read. It’s been a few years since I’ve read it, and the storyline still sticks with me as one of my favorites in the fantasy genre. If you want something different in terms of world-building, Sanderson’s your guy.
All of his books are good but Elantris was the first book of his that I ever read. Just read it. It will change your life.
I read Elantris after having read the Stormlight Archives, The Reckoners, and the Mistborn series–and I absolutely loved this story! It rates up among my favorites from Sanderson. I’m now collecting editions of this one and have the hardcover, audiobook, and for Christmas got the leather-bound edition.
A little more political I would say than in his other books, but it is a good politics. Very entertaining.
I had picked up this book just from the description and I was glad that I had. I used to have to travel a lot, so it was an audible format at first, but I loved it so much, I bought the e-book as well. The system of magic, the mystery of why the system failed, the characters in the story all came to life for me in a way that rarely occurs. I …
Love Brandon Sanderson and this offering was no exception.
