In one of the darkest Myrtle Clover Mystery yet, our favorite octogenarian sleuth is asked by an old friend, Pearl, to edit a memoir. Myrtle agrees then goes out to lunch, but by the time she gets back, the manuscript is nowhere to be found. So Myrtle and her trusty sidekick Miles head over to Pearl’s house to ask her some questions. But that is no longer possible because Pearl is dead.
Myrtle is determined to solve the murder and find the manuscript. Pearl had stated that the memoir contained some family secrets, and that makes Myrtle think that there is a motive there. But as she digs deeper into Pearl’s murder, connections begin to pop up between Pearl’s death and a thirty year old mystery about a teen runaway. When another member of the family is found dead, Myrtle realizes that if she doesn’t figure out the family’s secret, even more people may die.
This mystery is one of the most disturbing mysteries that Craig has ever written. There are roots in this story going back thirty years, and the secrets of this one family in Bradley, North Carolina are extremely shocking. The characters are great, and the family itself has so many varied kinds of people that it is truly a mystery of what happened between them.
This Myrtle Clover Mystery is fantastic and has one of the most convoluted plots of the series, but everything comes together perfectly. Definitely start earlier in the series, but if you know the characters, this one is a great mystery. Darker than usual but with the same great mystery, this is a grand addition to the series.
I thought that this Myrtle book was written different from the others in the series. (NOT BAD DIFFERENT, JUST DIFFERENT). I enjoyed it alot even if it seemed like Miles kept getting the short end of the stick. He got sick, he had to haul cat food, hosting book club and lets not forget being Myrtle’s very nervous passenger. (scary) Not sure who else in that tiny town can be murdered, but I am excitedly waiting to get the next book to find out.
Miss Myrtle was a hoot. She was a High School English teacher and is now retired. However, this does not stop her from treating others (many former students) as her class room. She is also annoyed with her son, who is a detective, and she does everything she can to irritate him; from telling him she is buying a car to putting gnomes all around her yard that he has to see everyday as he lives across the street! Her sidekick is mild-mannered Miles. He’s not always sure about Myrtle’s ideas, but he still follows along. In this story, Pearl asks Myrtle to edit her memoirs. She hints at secrets being revealed. Within a few hours, the manuscript has been stolen from Miss Myrtle’s home and Pearl is dead. Myrtle and Miles are now investigating who took the manuscript and murdered Pearl
I enjoyed this book. The characters are a fun and the writing style is easy to read. The story captured my attention pretty quickly. Thanks to GoodReads for the giveaway!
