Definitely an intriguing start to a new series. We meet Calliope who writes because she loves it but has to hide it from her parents. She enters a writing contest in secret but when her parents find out things get really bad. They ground her and send her off to a boarding school which they think will be punishment. She gets a surprise when she gets there only to find out it a school just for writers and they recruited her thanks to her contest entry. Her parents will be kept in the dark. This sounds awesome until the threats pop up, secrets start flying, and mysteries abound. A solid start which builds an interesting world perfect for readers and authors alike. Plenty of twists around solid characters. I really liked it so I give it 4/5 stars.
Wow this book is just phenomenal. The characters the plot the places everything was vivid. And that ending I was stunned i really hope we find out what happened to Blair and poor Cal finding her.
She was oppressed at home to say the least. Her parents were determined she she only get good grades, no silly ambitions for her. Calliope had a dream, to be a writer, and entered a contest. This got her grounded. A few weeks later she is sent to a French boarding school, Ecrivain Academy which is described as only core corses, lots of discipline and absolutely no options. She finds herself on a plane before she could even call her friend. But Ecrivain Academy is not as advertised and she realizes her adventure is just beginning.
This is a great book filled with interesting and well crafted characters. The characters grow and change over the course of the novel as they deal with internal struggles and external obstacles creating an emotional rollercoaster. The narrative is wonderful and helps further develop the characters and describe the setting giving the book a lot of interest. The suspense begins to build as unexpected surprises and terror grow throughout the book. Be warned that this book has a bit of a cliff hanger. I liked that this book does not deal with a paranormal academy but rather a contemporary one with normal teenage behaviour that turns to bullying and continues to escalate. I am looking forward to the next edition.

She wants to write and create new worlds but her parents want her to do something else. So off to boarding school for her as they hope it will take her away from such ideas. They are wrong as it is just the place for her. Something else is also going on. What is it? Can she find out? See if she can

Ecrivain Academy is Harry Potter for book nerds! It was such a fun, quick read. Calliope is sent off to a boarding school in France in a crazy effort to keep her focused on her studies and not her writing. Or any extra circulars for that matter. She makes her way through her studies, finding which house she fits in and discovering that what she thought was going to be terrible is actually terrific. Until you get to the end of the book and then oh crap! The book does end on a cliff hanger so fair warning.
Ecrivain by Elizabeth Dunlap is a wonderful story to read. This is book number one in this awesome start to a to a brand new series for me to read and I love it. I highly recommend this story to everyone who loves reading about YA stories as much as I do.

Oh my goodness you cannot leave it there!!!! Ugh! I just…I need the next book like yesterday…I have sooooo many questions I now need answers to… I have to know where people have gone…I have to know what the heck is going on…I…I…I just…ok let’s face it I got completely sucked in. There are characters I want to sort out, characters that I just want to hug. That to me is the mark of a good story. It did take me a little time to settle in and get hooked, but once I was, that was it. I love the idea behind the book, it’s not one that I’ve come across before and I love the references sprinkled throughout the book.
A Writing Academy!
What a novel concept for a fictional academy! There are so many YA novels written about various types of magical schools, but this one is a nonmagical one just for writers. Calliope’s parents decide to send her off to a boarding school that has no extracurricular activities because they want her to focus on her schoolwork and not on writing. They had been most displeased to see that she had spent time working on a story for a writing contest rather than her homework; they do not approve of dreamers. Little did her parents know that the academy they sent her to was actually a secret school just for would-be writers; of course, anyone who has taken French would understand that a school called Ecrivain would have something to do with writing! I thought this was a fun take on the academy concept. I thought the bit with the parents was a little overblown, and sometimes Calliope’s reactions to what happened to her at school seemed a bit much as well. But as a lover of literature and writing, I found myself smiling more than once at the happenings in this book.
