For snowbound days I recommend this gorgeous tale full of dazzling wintry imagery. I love fairytale retellings, and this one is based on the Norwegian story “East of the Sun, West of the Moon,” which is like “Beauty and the Beast” but with much more plot. The interesting and independent main character gets to have hardy adventures and be heroic in her own right. It’s an especially great read for fans of Gail Carson Levine (if you ever want to talk about what a travesty the Ella Enchanted movie was, I’m here for you).

A beautiful and engrossing fairy tale that is perfect for the heart of winter. It read like an old classic, and I loved the many voices sharing the narrative. It reminds me of reading one of my all time favorite books, Gail Carson Levine’s The Two Princesses of Bamarre – the adventure, the thread of magic, the fierce heroine. I honestly can’t believe I never picked this book up until now!

East (East, #1) by Edith Pattou – It’s a fairy tale retelling with some fabulous world building! The danger of going through old books and adding my review is that I figured out there is a second book. So I just ordered two used books because it was cheaper to have them ship me hardcovers than buy the kindle book. Where is my resolve to not overflow my bookshelves when I need it? But look for my recommendation for West! Happy Reading!

I remembered ‘East’ as a book that I picked up when I was, I believe, in middle school. As I made my way through the book, I realized that I never finished it. And now that I have, I can’t imagine any reason good enough to have put this book down and never pick it up again.
The retelling of this fairytale is incredible. The writing is superb, the dialogue realistic, and the story enchanting. The characters are so clearly portrayed, and it is as if they came to life and jumped off the page. I felt the emotion of each character, from the melancholy and hope of the white bear to the fear and excitement of Rose.
This is a fantastic book that I recommend to anybody who enjoys magic and mythology that touch life and change it. It is a story I could read again and again and still not tire of the tale. Definitely recommended!

East is a brand new take in Beauty and the Beast. While the story begins slowly, this book becomes a very twisted story of love, loss, and revenge. I was unable to put this book down!

I really enjoyed reading this book. It had a similar vibe to The Bear and the Nightingale, although it was not quite as layered and nuanced. Anyone who likes new takes on old fairy tales with a more historic bent would enjoy this.
