“The thrills are nonstop, the alien cultures and races are well developed and fascinating, and there’s just the right amount of humor to keep the whole thing fizzing.” — Analog Science Fiction and FactReese Eddings has enough to do keeping her rattletrap merchant vessel, the TMS Earthrise, profitable enough to feed herself and her crew. So when a mysterious benefactor from her past shows up … benefactor from her past shows up demanding she rescue a man from slavers, her first reaction is to run for the hills. Unfortunately, she did promise to repay the loan. But she didn’t think it would involve tangling with pirates over a space elf prince…
Book 1 of the Her Instruments trilogy is a rollicking adventure set in the expansive Pelted universe, and kicks off an epic space opera series where the fate of worlds hangs in the balance. Fans who enjoyed Firefly or Andromeda will like this series.

I lost a great deal of sleep when I read this series. Reese is the Captain of her cargo ship that wasn’t doing too well. She gets bailed out of her debt by a mysterious benefactor who calls in the debt by sending Reese and her crew on a rescue mission. Reese finds out that her target is an Eldtrich, a xenophobic race that has a taboo about touching. And much mayhem and action ensues. I loved this series and I will be looking into other books by this author.
Pretty good reading. Not sure if it’s for YA but I found it entertaining. Poor Reese just wants to be a merchant with her ship Earthrise and her assorted crew when she ends up with drug lords. The author was kind enough to summarize the different characters and also added a drawing of them at the end of the book
Nice world development and excellent characters. I had to buy the next in the series after I finished.
The characters made this story come alive. I ended up reading the entire series, one-after-another.
Enjoyed the quirky characters. Story flowed smoothly, althoughI had problems understanding the main person’s anger and decisions. I would read the next in the series.
This is a delightful story of the crew of space ship Earthrise. I would rate it a young adult read for the implied sexual activity.
This begins with some character development and introduction. You get some hints about the species and their culture, but their is more in character descriptions section. This motley group is sponsored by an unknown who calls in the debt at a very unexpected time. This leads them on an adventure and introduction to the most interesting person to be a part of the crew.
If you have read any of the “jenkinsverse” you will appreciate the diversity of this book.
i enjoyed reading this book.
Love this book!
What more could you want from Star Trek like adventurers, some human, some not. What does it matter that the cats like to misbehave a bit? Don’t they all?
Adventure from one corner of the galaxy to the others. And a final dispatching of the bad guys. Yea, one for the Captain!
I really enjoyed the story and the characters in this book. The author built an amazing group of uplifted animals and some divergent humans along with some real aliens. Graet job. I could not put it down.
It’s fun, original, and the characters really grow on you.
MC.A. Hogarth has an amazing imagination, and it’s used to craft a wonderful and very original story. Hogarth is in command of the creative and the craft. I’ve read all three in the series, plus a sort of bonus book about events that take place towards the end of the third book. I could easily them all again, and I will at some point.
I purchased this book then bought the entire series, very entertaining…
I read the whole series and the one after. Terrific story that held my interest. While I didn’t like so many books in the set, I read them. I couldn’t wait from book to book to see my hero’s save the day again!!
This was a very enjoyable read. I look forward to reading the next book!
I’m always amazed by the minds of people who can write really well. People who can imagine worlds, creatures, futures, and interesting characters and who also manage to explore the human condition in unexpected and fascinating ways. MC Hogarth has done all of that in Earthrise. Get it now, but be prepared you will want the entire series.
Book had sporadic sections of action and interest.
Main character seemed a contradiction to the setting and level of intelligence the situation called for. I couldn’t accept the main character ‘s ability to be in charge.
But action sequences were good and believable.
a promising start to what may become an enjoyable series.
Love the characters
Good read, now I need to get the next 2……
