They came from deep space. They came to destroy us.
Fifty years ago, bloodthirsty aliens devastated the Earth. Most of humanity perished. We fell into darkness.
But now we rise from the ashes. Now we fight back.
Marco Emery was born into the war. After his mother is killed, he joins the Human Defense Force, Earth’s ragtag army. Emery must survive basic training, become a soldier, and finally … become a soldier, and finally face the aliens in battle.
Against the alien onslaught, Earth stands alone. But we will fight. We will rise. We will win.
If you loved Ender’s Game, Battlestar Galactica, and Old Man’s War, you’ll love Earthrise, a new military science fiction series. From a USA Today bestselling author.

EARTH ALONE is quite thrilling and brutal at the same time, aliens like giant centipedes called The Scum have torn Earth to pieces and we follow Marco through this basic training in the military. I loved all the characters that surrounded him. My favorite was Beast, who couldn’t help but compare everything to Russia. Lol. I did laugh out loud listening as I walked through the park. The narrator had the Russian accent down pat. The ending was heart-breaking but realistic. The setting was rough too. I felt like I was at boot camp, sweating and suffering! But I knew what I was in for when I decided to pick up the series. I’ve read John Scalzi’s OLD MAN’S WAR books and this was somewhat similar. Not for the faint of heart! But my heart is made of coal anyway, so I loved it. 😉
The Earthrise series is one of my favourite sci fi series. Highly recommend!
This week’s book is Earth Alone by Daniel Arenson.
Decades after a species of predatory alien scum first assaulted Earth, a young boy named Marco Emery loses his mother to a surprise attack in Toronto. The memory haunts him from that day until he’s drafted into the Human Defense Force, Earth’s army, so that he can learn to face and kill the scum who took his mother from him.
Earth Alone is a bootcamp story at its core—it’s the story of a tortured young man being forged in the fire of suffering. But it’s also a story of how a group of young people from all different walks of life can overcome hardship by working together. Real friendships are power—they can help you get through the worst days of your lives.
This novel is the beginning of a military sci-fi series that takes a squad of misfits into space and beyond. The characters are authentic and believable, the alien race is vivid and frightening, and the plot is full of surprises.
Hope you enjoy it. See you next week.

In Earth Alone, Earthrise Book 1, Daniel Arenson creates a world where Earth is under attack from a vicious alien race and 18 year olds are conscripted into a five year defend the Earth program. Earth is at an extreme disadvantage and these young people are the first line of defense. It is military sci-fi with teenage angst. The story is dark and scary, but the characters are wonderful. And there are eleven more books in the series.
This is the first book in the Earthrise series. I enjoyed the story and the characters the author developed. He hid a good job on the world building and on the various sub plots. At times though the dialogue was a little hard to get through. I’ll purchase the second book in the series to see where the author takes the story
I almost cried at the end of this book.
I bought this book in the three book collection. There was never anything boring. The characters were well fleshed out. There was no huge infodump at the beginning. This series is written like Ender’s Game but is equally good, if not better. Words flow smoothly and there weren’t any grammatical errors. When I got to the end there was a moment of redemption that almost made me cry. I won’t spoil it for you.
My only beef with main character is that he likes too many women too fast, and can’t make up his mind, even though he’s supposed to be a nice guy. Also, isn’t that against military regulations?
This is a series about an alien invasion. The aliens aren’t cyborgs or androids. This is military science fiction. It takes place on Earth and you must keep reading to find out more about other planets. A book must be great if it moves you, and this is it.
It took some time to really get into this book, but I’m glad I stuck with it. The characters grew more and more human and I found myself rooting for them and saddened by their losses. I felt myself suffering along with them in boot camp and during their first battle. You see their self sacrifice and rise to true heroism to support their comrades in arms. The Earthrise series has great potential.
Very intriguing and compassion while displaying indifference. Strange characters but believable. Good read.
This is book one of a 15 book series. If you fall in love with the characters you have some great reading ahead. Well written science fiction story. Daniel Arenson knows how to write characters into a corner and make you care about them. I recommend good sci-fi to my newsletter subscribers, and this is one of them.
Earth Alone
Earthrise, Book 1
By: Daniel Arenson
Narrated by: Jeffrey Kafer
This book is so awesome! The insect like aliens with high intelligence invaded Earth and killed over half of life. Now they invade and attack random areas. At age 18, people enlist or go to prison. This is a story about a group of friends going through boot camp. It is realistic, in many parts, and emotional. Action packed and what teens/young adults would feel and say. This author has his pulse on youth.
The narration is terrific of course with Jeffrey Kafer! Perfect! Heading for book 2!
