Marcus Brayden, Earl of Kinross, thought fighting Napoleon on the battlefield was dangerous. But it is nothing to the upheaval caused by Lara Le Brecque, his best friend’s sister, when she climbs over his townhouse wall shortly before Christmas and attempts to sneak into his London home. Lara ought to be on the marriage mart, enjoying her London season and the holiday festivities, but when she … confides the Le Brecque family problems to him, he knows he must do all he can to help…even if it means marrying Lara.
Lara Le Brecque is facing another difficult Christmas with her family in disgrace and under threat of losing all their holdings. Lara has no one else to turn to but Marcus Brayden, who has just returned home from the Napoleonic War and been awarded the Scottish earldom of Kinross for his heroism in battle. With her father under house arrest and suspected of treason, and her brother condemned as a pirate and a murderer, she must expose the villain behind this plot to destroy her family and needs Marcus to help her bring this culprit to justice. Marcus has told her to hide in his rooms at the Wicked Earls’ Club if ever she is in danger, but as she finds herself falling in love with Marcus, she realizes the greatest danger of all is to her heart.

This is exactly the kind of book that I picked up randomly, but that makes me want to read the rest of the books in the series. I highly recommend it!
If ever there was a true hero, it is Marcus Brayden, Earl of Kinross. He won my heart in record time, of course what am I saying! Meara Platt is the author, so I knew this was going to be a special romance!
A heroine who is desperate for help because her family was in dire straits, oh yes, pretty bad. She turns to the exact person who could help her without any hesitation. Of course she sneaks into his house so she can talk to him and wow, does she get a surprise! He hauls her in as she is climbing in the window and tosses her in a chair.
“Her eyes focused on this bare-chested man who was the size of a Roman gladiator. Oh..my…heavens. She tried not to gawk at the dusting of dark hair across his tanned chest or the the path that line of hair took downward to his navel. Heaven help her but he was splendid.” Paraphrased but I felt a little faint myself!
Sorry, I digressed just had to share that! With a little of everything needed to be a perfect story… adventure, romance, villains and a swoon worthy hero that I will not forget soon.
Don’t miss this enthralling story that you really will not be able to put down once you turn the first page. Sigh…
Lara world is coming down and now feels the weight of it in her shoulders. When Marcus her brother friend returns from France she decided she has no choice but to get his help. While sneaking in his home and asking for help Marcus has a few conditions of his own which he claims is to protect her but later realized this spitfire stole his heart.
Good book love the banter among the characters especially the females strong funny and independent
A quick, yet engaging story with humorous moments of a woman left to fend for herself. Her brother’s good friend comes to the rescue when her life is close to hitting rock bottom. But is that what she wants?
Lara Le Brecque is a character easy to love (just a tad bit wicked!) She didn’t let her gender detour her from trying to solve her problems. She’s a character who uses humor to get through rough times. But watch out for her temper! You will love her boldly innovative means of ‘getting the job done’!
Lord Kinross, her childhood playmate has grown to be quite the hero. With Lara’s morning call by climbing over a wall to his townhouse and the hilarious scene of finding Marcus in dishabille, we discover even though this is a light moment between the two, she has big problems. The first scene had me captivated from its first paragraphs.
Her brother, Hugh, once the Visount Brixham is running as a fugitive, while her father, Earl of Stratton, is under house arrest. All these challenges throw up so many questions needing to be answered.
Marcus clinches my interest in the story when he says he’ll marry Lara if he can’t clear her father and brother’s names. Subsequently Lara throw a plate of eggs across the room.
The story sparks laughter as Lara and Marcus spar on most points–great dialogue. It gets heated with Lara’s response to the man her playmate has become (very sensuous).
I hope you pick up the book. Meara Platt’s style is her own. I highly recommend

My review
When the hero saves the day in less time to spell it…
After months of leaving under pressure in dire circumstances, Lara is at the end of her rope.
Why she breaks in her brother’s best friend home, in hope to find new blood to help her. And help she will have, like a savior, Marcus will solve nearly everything.
This one book is not my favorite of Mrs Platt’s work, everything went too fast, from the insta-love to the insta-resolution.
The main characters are sweet and kind, instantly attracted to one another once they rekindle their own relationship but the action moved much too fast around them.
As if with a magic wand Marcus can undo everything when Lara struggled for months.
I confess I would have liked a bit more actions for them, to get more time together, to work on their feelings. And when apart, maybe read some exchanges letters or read about their thoughts …
In all it is a swift read with two cute characters.
3.75 rounded to 4

General Marcus Brayden, Earl of Kinross is home from the war. He was granted the earldom by the Crown for his heroic war service & hopefully France will stay quiet & he can enjoy some time away from the fighting. However; the quiet seems to be an impossibility as a woman climbs over his townhouse wall & is attempting to find a way into his home. He grabs her, not knowing her identity, & hauls her to his study where he discovers it is his best friend’s sister, Lara LeBrecque.
Lara has know Marcus since she was very young & he is her last hope to help her family. She explains to Marcus that while he has been gone fighting, her father has been charged with treason & put under house arrest & Hugh, her brother, has been convicted of murdering Hugh & Marcus’ best friend, Richard Harlan (not true) & Hugh had escaped prison & was off in somewhere in the West Indies searching for the real murderer so he can clear his name.
Marcus forms a force of investigators & arranges for protection for Lara & her father. He & Lara work together to find clues & proof & the danger increases when some important people in the government are responsible for the fake charges against her father & brother.
Lara has idolized Marcus as long as she can remember & Marcus has always protected & cared for her as a sister until he returned home & found her to be a beautiful, feisty, innocent lady that he can no longer think of as a sister.
Meara Platt always has engaging stories to tell & then creates fascinating characters that you fall in love with & find yourself riding in the carriages along with them. I highly recommend this entertaining historical romance book.

I am really enjoying all of these Christmas additions to the Wicked Earls’ series. This one was particularly good. I thoroughly enjoyed both the hero and the heroine because they were both strong, confident and well-rounded. I thought the ‘love’ happened a little quickly, but, well, it was a novella length. It was all very believable.
Marcus Brayden, Earl of Kinross, comes from a close and powerful family that boasts many titles, much wealth and influence, many military heroes and strong, independent women. According to Marcus, “Having been raised by strong women, he was not of the mind that the fairer sex was helpless.” That, of course, made him a perfect match for our heroine who was, according to Marcus, “a squirming bundle of defiance and determination”.
Lady Lara LeBrecque, the only daughter of the Earl of Stratton, has had a miserable last few years. Well, her entire family has had a miserable last few years. The LeBrecque’s have been under siege and they can’t seem to find a way out. Lara’s father has been accused of treason and her brother, Hugh, has been accused of murder. Now, Lara is feeling under threat from Lord Alistair Dunning who is the judge who has presided over both her father’s and her brother’s legal woes. Dunning watches her with lecherous eyes and she knows he has intentions for her as well as the rest of her family. With her brother on the other side of the world trying to hunt down the villain they are sure is behind their troubles, and her father under house-arrest and watched constantly, Lara has few, if any, people or places to go to for help.
Marcus has been back from the wars in France for only a month or two – recuperating from a wound. He hasn’t been out in society, so he has no clue what has been going on in England while he’s been off fighting. He’s a high ranking general and has about every medal for bravery you can get – not to mention that he’s handsome as sin. One morning, in the earliest daylight hours, he catches a glimpse of a woman scaling over his fence and heads out to catch her. What a surprise to see that it is Lady Lara, his very best friend’s sister. Once she tells Marcus what has been happening to her family, Marcus knows he has to help her and her family – but it will take all of his family resources as well as his relationship with Queen Charlotte and the Prince Regent.
This was a delightful, romantic, non-stop, action-packed story that you’ll read straight through. You just won’t be able to put it down because you will just have to know what happens next. There is also a wonderful epilogue to round out the book – and I always love epilogues!
I liked the lead characters. I found it a bit beyond belief that Lara’s father was distraught to the point of illness but, it’s necessary to the plot for him to be passive and be the one in need of rescue so, whatever. The story concerns itself with the interactions that solidify Marcus and Lara as a couple and we have time lapses while they are parted and much of the political work of the rescuing takes place off stage. I would have liked more onstage action (and I don’t mean bedroom action) carry the plot forward.
I voluntarily read a complimentary copy provided by the author and I offer my honest opinion in response.
