I received this advance copy (story) in exchange for an “honest” review.
What do you do after winning a mega lottery but given a death sentence? You make a bucket list and live life! Throw in Machu Picchu and volcano water; safari and a witch doctor ; a French castle and crown and you have a formula for falling in love. I love Rich’s books. Characters are believable, conversation realistic , clean romantic and interesting plots. You feel right there watching the development of “quirky” romance as it should be. You’ll never be sorry buying one of his stories. Thanks Rich!
You have to understand what you’re getting when you read a Rich Amooi book. They’re supposed to be fun, lighthearted little fantasies—no-brainer escapism if you will. They’re sorta like modern day fairy tales for adults. They’re not meant to be analyzed. If you nitpick too much they lose their charm and wit and their ability to block out the real world for a couple hours.
Despite my knowing that from the start, this isn’t my favorite Rich Amooi book. I think he bit off more than he could chew with this one. There were so many elements in it—life and death, medical details, travel and culture, personality contrasts, a romance, and I’m sure there’s more that I can’t think of right now. I could literally see where Rich tried to plug up the plot holes but there were still so many left that it was hard to brush them off after a while. The story skirts the line between cutesy and silly. You need to be careful when your characters are 50 years old. Maybe if they were 30 I could buy into it more easily.
That said, the travel and tourism portions had moments of authenticity. The descriptions of Peru and Paris were believable. Rich usually does pretty good research, I’ll give him that. There was just too much to keep up with in this book.
This story’s sweetness, adventure, lovable hero and minimal drama would translate perfectly into a Hallmark movie. Read this book if you are a Rich Amooi fan, but be aware it is a little different from his other books.
This was an easy read but also easy to be done and forget. The premise was interesting as we’re Liz’s intentions. I liked how she grew as a person and I liked the other characters. However, it was just too tidy and perfect to be taken seriously. Definitely a light read and not as thought provoking as I wanted.
