I have read thousands of science fiction books, this one ranks as the number one. Develops the characters so well!
If you like Science Fiction or just reading a totally entertaining, classic tale, Dune by Frank Herbert is for you. It’s a story that takes you on a journey of imagination and outerworld fantasy, you will not want to put the book down.
Very detailed, believable world
I have read this many times and I know a lot about the author. It has lessons, but keep in mind Herbert was not a Christian, nor did he like us.
Hard to explain, I have read it many times over the years. Still love it
It was a good read but not good enough to want to read its sequels. A lot of characters I couldn’t empathize with. My take, since I’ve read other reviews to know I’m not among the majority. Don’t watch the movie, it’s terrible.
Major first book lots of action great world building a very unusual world. The succeeding books get a little bit philosophical lot of time spent in consideration of those things but this first book was one of the best
Absolutely fascinating, one of the best I’ve ever read. Skip the sequels.
I fell into the world of Dune and had to read all the books in the series and this world continues to live on inside my mind although it has been nearly 30 years since I first read Dune.
This is one of my favorites ever. I have read the entire 7 book original series. I have since bought the extended series that his son has written.
I read Dune for the first time when I was in my teens, and it was the inspiration that lead to my life-long love of the desert. Herbert’s depiction of Paul Atreides’s battle for the planet Arrakis — or Dune, as it is known by its inhabitants, the Fremen — makes this novel a science-fiction classic. A must read!
Classic book with a wonderfully imagined world. Definitely the best in the series. The subsequent books go off the rails a little.
I tried several times to read this book, and found myself lost in the words due to the date of publication and how different books are written today. But, I was told it was a classic that I must read. The audibook version was entertaining, easy to follow, breathtaking, and a splendid adventure. I’m so glad I was able to experience this story through this version. I am looking forward to seeing the show too. If you like vivid descriptions, in-depth characterization, beautiful pose, and unique world building, this is a great sci-fi to dive into and I fully recommend the audiobook version.
I held off on reading this book for so long. More fool me. Dune is one of the great examples of SFF world-building. While the story is set thousands of years in the future, artificial intelligence and robotics have been outlawed. This gives the world of Dune a distinctive baroque/feudal feel. Another interesting choice is the constant “head-hopping” from character to character. This works brilliantly, adding complexity to every conversation. Full of great characters, none of whom could be classed as a conventional hero. Not an action-packed novel but the combat scenes are excellent.
Quite possibly the best sci-fi novel / series ever written. I’ve read the complete series 3 times.
Overrated
I can’t even say how many times I’ve read this classic book. Pure entertainment and escapism.
A great read
I believe I read Dune my senior year in high school, 1967. Frank hooked me on SF.
Great sci-fi! One of my favorites.
