NOW A MAJOR MOTION PICTURE directed by Denis Villeneuve, starring Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Jason Momoa, Rebecca Ferguson, Oscar Isaac, Josh Brolin, Stellan Skarsgård, Dave Bautista, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Chang Chen, Charlotte Rampling, and Javier Bardem.Frank Herbert’s classic masterpiece—a triumph of the imagination and one of the bestselling science fiction novels of all time.Set on … the bestselling science fiction novels of all time.
Set on the desert planet Arrakis, Dune is the story of the boy Paul Atreides, heir to a noble family tasked with ruling an inhospitable world where the only thing of value is the “spice” melange, a drug capable of extending life and enhancing consciousness. Coveted across the known universe, melange is a prize worth killing for….
When House Atreides is betrayed, the destruction of Paul’s family will set the boy on a journey toward a destiny greater than he could ever have imagined. And as he evolves into the mysterious man known as Muad’Dib, he will bring to fruition humankind’s most ancient and unattainable dream.
A stunning blend of adventure and mysticism, environmentalism and politics, Dune won the first Nebula Award, shared the Hugo Award, and formed the basis of what is undoubtedly the grandest epic in science fiction.

This extraterrestrial thriller transports the reader to anothe world where spice trade is king and rulers have tenuous hold on their thrones, but with the help of non-traditional witches, their rules can be secured, even for future generations.
A classic, to reread over the years, along with its spinoffs.
I was initially assigned this as required reading in high school back in 1978. I loved it then, and each time I have reread it since. Highly recommended.
one of the finest and most original sci fi novels written.
This is one of the all-time science fiction classics for any number of reasons: there’s just nothing else quite like it. Whatever it is you go in expecting, you’ll almost certainly be surprised. Also, there’s a film adaptation coming out at the end of this year directed by the very talented Denis Villeneuve, and I definitely recommend you read the book before seeing the movie.
Classic.
This is a classic sci-fi book that all readers who love alternate universes should read. There is civil unrest, a corrupt government, warring factions, and a manipulative religious sect all competing for power. A long held prophecy of the Fremen people tells of the coming of a Messiah who will come to lead them. Is Paul the one?
Best science fiction book ever written.
Having read the whole series decades ago, I’m pleased a new generation of readership has discovered this epic series. It has political intrigue, treachery, horror, heroism, supernatural elements, spiritual elements, and all of it is delivered in a mind-bending setting of Arrakis, a dangerous desert planet that would be avoided by all species except for its rare and valuable resource known as melange or The Spice. This spice makes space travel possible, but it is more than fuel.
The proud regal Atreides family battles with the Harkonnen family for rulership over this planet. The native people, known as the Fremen, hold the secret to harvesting the spice.
Buckle up, readers, because some of the evils in this book rival those found in horror novels.
By all means, read the book before seeing the 2020 movie. I’m excited to see the cast of the 2020 movie because the actors chosen for it fit how I imagined them. Do not get me started on the 1984 movie which disappointed in so many ways.
Published by Frank Herbert in 1965, DUNE established the basis for classic science fiction with its mixture of world-building, adventure, environmentalism, and politics. Easy-to-read? Not by today’s standards, but it was a best-seller with a cult following the moment it hit the stands. Now it is classified as Space Opera – space warfare and melodramatic adventure – but that’s a small box for an epic book.
I have read the original four books in the series, the sequels, and the prequels. Whoever said there were no more original ideas clearly isn’t thinking hard enough because Frank Herbert is pulling ideas from dimensions even Steven Hawking hasn’t conceptualized.
The original movie is garbage but if you like the books I’d recommend checking out the Sci-Fi channel mini series!
Arguably the greatest Science Fiction book of all time.
A true classic of science fiction. A book that weaves a world of its own and is so vivid imagined that the images and characters are still strong in memory many years later.
So good, always good reread it every year good.
Classic masterpiece (and better than the movie!)
I hate the fallibility of the portrayed hero
This Frank Herbert book was the first book of his that I have read. I don’t believe I will be looking for any more of the Dune books or others by Herbert. I am a Science Fiction fan but not one of Frank’s.
Science fiction masterpiece
A classic.
This is a wonderful sci fi book, full of politics and surprises. Among the top ten in my opinion.
