Brilliant book, much more than a Sci-Fi adventure
One of the best ScFi books of all time
Came out of the time of the oil embargo in US (spice = oil)
A MUST READ!!!
Frank Herbert’s Dune is an interesting opportunity to revisit an important scifi book from 1965 that has contributed much to contemporary fantasy literature and video. The extraordinary demands of life on the planet Arrakis catalyze strange and severe solutions, and the potent and mystical influence of an addictive spice drives the complex contest for planetary domination. The austere and beautiful serascapes complete with monstrous burrowing predators are emblematic of a planet without room for illusions or innocence, and Dune is ground-breaking in the cold conscience its voice brings to human conflict.
Gave a new meaning to Science Fiction.
Extraordinary characters that are unforgettable.
Classic sci-fi. Hard to put down. Have re-read it several times over the years.
Excellent world and character development. Scifi does not get any better.
One of the best sci-fi books ever written. I read it too many times to count. I do not miss.
Classic
One of the “Must Haves” in any collection. Have read and re-read this book, as well as all the books in the series. This is the original and the best
The entire Dune series is outstanding. Start with Dune and work your way through. You won’t regret it.
A real classic of SF
A true classic of science fiction – very complicated; fascinating civilization/cultures. I’ve re-read it many times since it was first serialized in Analog Science Fiction/Science Fact.
This classic Sci-Fi novel won both the first Nebula award in 1965 and tied for the Hugo award. It’s a mesmerizing and epic story of politics, environmentalism, mysticism and intrigue set in a future time and space. When I read it the first time, I was enthralled, but disappointed in the David Lynch 1984 movie and the subsequent mini-series in 2000. This is a book that is better than any movie can interpret it. This is the “Game of Thrones” of Sci-Fi, decades before the GOT.
A classic
I read this book in my twenties and hated it although I did finish it. Then I picked it up in my forties and was riveted. I couldn’t wait to read the entire series and it changed how I looked at the world. I’m in my sixties now and I think about things from those books all the time.
Amazing and innovative. A true landmark in Sci Fi. A much better book than a franchise, though. By the time they got to Return of the Bride of the God Emperor of Dune, it was too lame to go on.
This ranks as one of the greatest science fiction novels of all time. Incredible world-building, awesome characters and a page-turning story. This is a must read for any serious reader! Do NOT miss this epic story.
Herbert was a pretty good story teller and Dune is his one true masterpiece.
Have to be high and lived through the 60’s to slog thru this.
